A lot of the earliest Nintendo games are actually quite terrible, even when put up against their contemporaries. Pac-Man, Galaga, Defender, Frogger, etc. are easily better than shit like Clu Clu Land and Ice Climber. Let's be honest, if Nintendo didn't become Nintendo nobody would give a shit about many of these games. Outside of the Donkey Kongs and eventually Super Mario Bros. were they really making top of the line games back then?

I've never liked nintendos products. They are what they are. There are way way better retro (and modern) games and systems than nintendo product. Zelda and Mario are massively overrated and over spammed franchises. Honestly Donkey Kong sucked and I never put a coin in it because there were better games to play in the arcade .like Defender. It seems like a marketing gimmick with no real substance.

The ports of their arcade games were the best on any home platform at the time by a mile. Balloon Fight, Excitebike, Wrecking Crew and Ice Climber are all worth playing today too.

A lot of the games are rudimentary even by 1985 standards. They look better than older games like Pitfall but don't play better than them or feel as fulfilling. While Nintendo was putting out Hogan's Alley, Atari was releasing Marble Madness. Prior to Super Mario Bros. Nintendo's games were the the Duplo Blocks of the video game landscape.

The mechanics are pretty stupid. Just getting from point A to point B is a pain in the ass. Its one of those things where I get what they were going for but it doesn't work the way they made it control. The game feels like it's fighting you.

I've seen a lot of these on pirate carts, many are similar to colecovision games but by the time system was really mainstream in 87-88 these games would have been the cheaper ones at the back of the catalog.
Donkey kong 3 and excitebike I really like even compared to later nes games.
