Which of the big three did you think stood out the most?

>> No.9990117

>>9990105
Mario 64 for sure. It quite literally made analog controls a necessity for 3D platforming.

The answer is obvious but Anti Nintendo nerds will cry about it

Mario 64 because it was released first and every single game ever released since copied it :^)

I think the best one is crash bandicoot and not Mario, what are your thoughts on that?

>> No.9990129

Three totally different games. Crash is more of a linear platformer where the goal is getting to the end, Mario 64 was more sandboxy with its levels and challenges, and Tomb Raider takes more after Prince of Persia/Out of this World.
Comparing them is pretty nonsensical.

Don't Forget about Bubsy 3D, which came out somewhere between Crash and Tomb Raider.

Maybe in Japan.
Crash released before it in NA / EU.
TR released before it in EU.

Mario 64 obviously. Crash is a great game too though. Both have responsive controls and great level design which is more than you can say about Tomb Raider.

I think TR's controls have delayed input by design. it's a bit slower paced than the other two with more of an emphasis on exploring dungeons. But considering the pacing, I can see why people preferred the others.

>> No.9990163

TR > Crash > vanilla Mario 64
Mario 64 has near-perfect controls, but a woefully inadequate level of challenge.
>b-but speedrunning!
Is for mentally ill troons.

Mario 64 is boring unless you're 10. Mario 64 ROM hacks, however, blow Crash and Tomb Raider out of the fucking water.

None of the above. This was the best platformer of 96.

>> No.9990231

I feel like Mario 64 is the best in terms of being both original and fun. The controls are appealing, the newness and gameplay are appealing, the art and music are appealing. Mario 64 was an excellent stab at a new genre and a classic. Crash is an awesome game, but it's basically a slightly-less-good DKC in 3D (not a bad thing, but it's not as 3D. You decide how much you care about that). Tomb Raider is a game that had ambition and excited people for true 3D in ways that can't be described today, but I think a modern audience would find it the least interesting.

>> No.9990252

Mario 64 wins out in gameplay and music
the first Crash was very rough around the edges but was quite a technical achievement
TR has instant death traps with tank controls - what where they thinking? - but stood out most because of the complete hysteria surrounding the main character
and I agree with >>9990227
gameplay wise DKC3 was more fun than all 3

DKC1 and 2 were definitely cool, but yeah trying to market fucking Kiddy Kong as edgy and hip is hilarious.
And it's even funnier when you understand that they were focusing on him rather than on the actual protagonist Dixie because they thought even a literal toddler would be considered more cool than a girl.

I'll admit that in 1996, I thought Kiddy was gay as fuck and didn't give it a chance. I think the game is great in hindsight, but I didn't play it for years.

Tomb raider and sm64 were so much more popular than crash. Lara Croft was the biggest woman vg character since ms.Pac-Man. Literally took the uk by storm and gave every nerd in America a boner for pyramid tiddies. There were magazine interviews with Lara Croft and swim suit editions. They even got Angelina Jolie to make 2 movies, which are not that bad desu. It may not seem like it now, but tomb raider was fucking huge in the 90s-mid 2000s

>> No.9992430

Crash 1 is honestly not very good. It's for like 90% just a 2D platformer with a pointless Z axis. Even most of the levels that aren't sidescrollers force you on a strictly straight path, like the rope bridge ones or the factory one with the rolling barrels. Really the only ones with some resemblance of 3D gameplay are the jungle and river ones, and the ones where you ride the hog and run from the boulder. It's hard yes, but mostly because the camera makes what is essentially simple 2D platforming needlessly more difficult. 2 and 3 are much better.
