Don't bother paying for it though, for the Steam releases they have done 0 work on making the games work on modern operating systems so you'll have to use compatibility mode or even a VM
Also Warcraft III was the shit man, I wasted thousands of hours on custom maps as a kid and teen, now Reforged won't run on Linux after the recent patch

But then how would OP get that burst of hipster dopamine and smug elitist satisfaction when someone asks what game he posted? After all, it's not enough to just enjoy mildly obscure videogames. You have to make sure the peasants know how much better you are than them by forcing them to grovel at your feet begging for the game title for a screenshot to a game you've most likely never actually played.

Also, my vote is for Win98 era third person 3D RPGs/Adventure games. They tend to be slower paced due to technical limitations and the relatively short draw distance makes for a more comfy environment. Pic related. Kings Quest 8 wasn't a great game but I loved just wandering around and exploring the environments. Other games that fit the bill are Summoner, Ultima 9, Gothic, etc. Some of these might not be especially good games but I enjoy exploring the environments.

It's an apocalyptic fantasy realm struck by flooding, undead, demons, monsters and bandits roaming about. That contrasted with confidently sounding units and serene music leads to pure comfness.

Also many user scenarios (including big pseudo-campaign) were collected by one guy on https://steamcommunity.com/app/281450/discussions/0/2132869574266546938/
so this game is worth revisiting.

I get the setting, my qualm is how static the game world is. Nothing is moving, the only scripted thing are messages for N turn or after capturing a city. Every mission is a slow grind through the map with your ultimate party.
D2 was a huge improvement

>> No.9975859

>>9975639
>my qualm is how static the game world is
Yeah. It was either stylistic choice or engine / time limitations. Still it's calmer than HoMM so it's easier to strategize.

>Every mission is a slow grind through the map with your ultimate party.
Ah yes, boring Komes beginner playstyle. After trying Guild Master with:
- thieves bamboozling enemy formations
- cheap illusion summons spam to sap CPUs mana and explore FoW faster
- rod planters rushing for gold
- juggling leveled units between commanders to steamroll mobs and level up even more
gameplay becomes much faster and funnier.
More so when running in GL Wrapper that provides option to speed up game if needed.
This probably also works for D2.

>> No.9976225

>>9975859
Bamboozling enemy formation works only for entry level squads, otherwise it's 30-40% of success and your thieves get a rope frequently. Savescumming isn't fun.

>> No.9976261

>>9976225
> Bamboozling enemy formation works only for entry level squads, otherwise it's 30-40% of success and your thieves get a rope frequently.
If you don't waste money each turn then that's a non-issue since thieves are reasonably cheap (~1-2 turns of gold gathering).

> Savescumming isn't fun.
I remember savescumming mainly during initial "ultimate party" playthrough, where any magic bombardment by enemy or overconfident charge on town led to unrecoverable loss or time-consuming retreat.

If thieves aren't your forte then just soften mobs with summons and buffed weaker commanders, optionally retreating them in time.
