Leaving Dodongo's early doesn't make much sense because the bombs are so close to the end of the dungeon anyway, but some sequence breaks do have merit, e.g. getting the hoverboots from shadow temple before spirit and leaving since they're almost completely separated from the rest of the dungeon and can be had in like 2 minutes. Also getting bow and megaton can open some interesting possibilities.

I find it interesting how when discussing non-linearity / alternate dungeon orders in OoT, spergs will come out of the woodwork to say shit like "b-but it doesn't change the game, you're just playing things out of order!!", meanwhile fucking nobody has ever made such a criticism of Star Fox 64 or any other game with branching paths. Then why does Navi not intimate you could go to either of these places? That a flag gets set that technically allows you to do things out of what seems to be their intended order (i.e., the voice of the designers in Navi tells you what to do when) does not suddenly mean that doing them out of order was the intent. Could be anything as boring as the restrictions or necessities of their memory usage made it easier to just quietly set everything at once and only tell people to do it later. Which is why I was interested in the possibility of devs specifically bringing it up instead of you ascribing intent from your own assumptions.

Yeah, but those shortcuts directly correspond to the linear sequence of requirements. Goron City has one back to Forest (that assumes you do not have bombs yet) in case you didn't get Saria's song already (which you wouldn't know you had to yet anyway).
Zora's Domain has one to Lake Hylia (and heavily hinted by the folks there) specifically just to easily grab the Princess's note in a bottle.

That could very well mean they wanted you to be able to choose which one you went to first. i'll give you an example of how they anticipated this very thing: fire arrows. you can get the fire arrows before ever beating water temple by getting the longshot, leaving, playing the scarecrow's song at the base of the pylon where the arrows spawn, and longshotting up. this would be pointless to do after beating the temple, because the lake would be full again and you could simply swim out to the arrows; and you can't even really do it after beating the temple because there would be nowhere to stand and play the song. there are other examples like this. it is very clearly something they considered. and why wouldn't they? the series had been doing it since the first game.

I always played shadow temple before spirit temple and then wondered why the purple music note came after the orange one
turns out you can easily play the spirit temple first, you don't need the hover boots. there's a white rupee that's hard to get without them though, you have to jump off a ledge and then get hurt by a boulder on purpose to jump just a little bit further and get the rupee
