Saw someone else say it too, Zone of the Enders 1 and 2 were both awesome. I beat 2 several times but never beat 1.

- Mark of Kri, pretty sweet melee combat game for the time with dismemberment which was fun.
- GTA Vice City of course, game has such a cool vibe to it.

Common opinions already stated in this thread, but dammit the games are good!
Gta SA and both Stories games
DMC 3 (Even though younger me never got past the level after cerberus due to being terrified by the game. I beat it a couple of years ago on an emulator)
DBZ: Budokai Tenkaichi 3
Delta Force (I think that was the name?): Black Hawk Down
Also, a game that I have not seen mentioned ever in any thread of any kind: Heatseeker. I never played Ace Combat and haven't done so yet, so I do not know if it was a bad or good flying game comparatively and I remember some missions being quite hard but it just oozed style, from the cinematic kills to the intermission cutscenes in the style of a military briefing. It was just a cool game.

i had Heatseeker for the ps2. i liked the game even though it was a poor mans ace combat but more arcadey. anon if u truly want a kino ace combat-kind of game then play Heroes of the Pacific. you wont regret it. KINo of the highest order.

DMC
Shinobi and Nightshade
God Hand
Drakan: The Ancients' Gates
Onimusha series
Armored Core series
Ace Combat series
Fatal Frame series
Shadow Hearts 1 and 2

This board seems to hate it, but I'm still a massive Shadow of the Colossus fan. It's not perfect, but I was engrossed at the time, really enjoyed the gameplay and the 'show me don't tell me' storytelling, and fantastic music. There wasn't really anything like it at the time, and it was a step towards games as a more widely respected art form.

Black was pretty cool too - one of the strongest FPSs on the platform; some of the meatiest feeling guns I've ever shot in a FPS and very much a stripping out of unnecessary elements to give a very pure shooting experience.

The whole Gran Turismo series was a high watermark for racing games.

I'll get some more hate for this statement, but I honestly think the Ratchet and Clank series are some of the best 3D platformers ever made. The design, writing, the movement and the kinetic feeling of how everything works, and the range of weapons make it quite an addictive set of games. I sunk 12 hours into the first Ratchet and Clank when I was procrastinating writing an essay for uni.

Not solely a PS2 game - but the Psychonauts port was pretty decent.

SC3 is the GOAT fighting game for singleplayer content. Chronicles of the sword, the story mode with branching paths, loads of challenges with special rules, the metric fuckton of unlockables (that you purchase in game, not as nickel & diming DLC), custom character creation. The fact that a game from 18 years ago has absolutely mogged anything that's been released since in terms of singleplayer content is just sad.

The weapons and their upgrades are the best in R&C. That's the strongest part of the series, not the platforming.
Jak, at least the first one, would be better as a platforming game. Don't care for Sly so not sure about it, from what I played it relied on mini games a lot, wasn't a fan.

Eh. Jak 2 and 3 had atrocious shooting mechanics. In Ratchet 2 they had the good sense add strafing and an aiming reticle. Those additions alone blow the shit out of Jak's clumsy combat.
The Sly sequels suffered from too many minigames and shitty secondary characters that you had to play as. Especially Sly 3.

Tokyo Xtreme Racer: Drift 2. My favorite racing game ever. Just the right amount of arcadeness, cars are fun to drive and all feel different, npc are fleshed out. The only bad thing about this game is music.
Ace Combat 5. Not as good as Electrosphere, but still rocks.

There are so many that I do like that has already been mentioned. So I will go for a mid-tier one that I really like called Skygunner. It has a magical atmosphere that is reminiscent of my most favorite childhood animations. The gameplay while simple has some depth with its combo system. It is a shame that it stayed exclusive to the PS2 platform, but maybe it could get a modern remake, since I believe there was a pretty similar fan game made for Windows.

Kaido Racer (Kaido Battle 2) is better IMO. It's very similar but just seems to be more soulful. Also it solves the problem of the music being bad, since you actually win music samples by beating rivals, which you can then use to create your own tracks in a rudimentary DAW inside of the game.

The Ratchet & Clank games are probably the games I’ve finished the most times in my life. I remember many a sleepover at my friend’s house where either of us would beat one of the games in that night. That series was on heavy rotation from grade to middle school for me.
It is funny how my opinions change over time, though. I replayed them recently for the first time in a decade or more, and the first is my favorite now. The things I loved about 2 and 3, like leveling weapons, weren’t unappreciated but didn’t make the game for me like they used.

This is just a talking point parroted by nintendies trying to cope with the GameCube coming in last place. This could only occasionally be considered true if the only factors you're looking at are load times and framerate. The GameCube versions of multiplats almost always have shit audio, shit textures, and shit quality FMVs in comparison to the PS2 and Xbox versions, on account of the gimped mini discs. Effects present on PS2 versions are also often missing or badly substituted on GameCube versions. Controls are also sometimes gimped (e.g. SSX) due to the GameCube controller having fewer buttons than Xbox and PS2. It's telling that your 2 examples of PS2 multiplats being worse are from 2 games that were originally only meant for the GameCube (before Capcom realised that releasing games exclusively for the shitcube isn't financially viable, because barely anyone owned one).

this shit was the GOAT 3D beat ‘em up, PS1 3D brawlers like fighting force and crisis beat just missed the mark, they couldn’t do it justice yet. Rockstar alone with Warriors, Bully, and state of emergency brought that arcadey fun to the 3D realm. Others like God hand and urban reign seem cool too. beat down: fists of vengeance beat Yakuza to the open world 3D beat ‘em up gimmick by a few months

A lot of PS2 multiplats are dogshit, but some of them have their own charm that I don't mind them being technically inferior. The Tom Clancy games come to mind.

There are some that are actually unplayable and should be avoided though. See Full Spectrum Warrior and Band of Brothers 1/2 to see the worst ports around.

PS2 was not my first system, but I definitely have the most nostalgia for it, due to hanging out with friends and playing games all summer in the early 2000s. Very good memories. And while the games don't hold up quite as well as SNES/Genesis era, there's a bunch of timeless classics. My favorites include:

Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven
Summoner
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance
Final Fantasy X
La Pucelle: Tactics
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Dynasty Warriors 3
Timesplitters 2 (mainly multiplayer though)

Not in any order, but if pressed, Tench: Wrath of Heaven is probably my pick for my favorite game on the platform.

I just tried it out of curiosity, did the tutorial level and everything ran perfectly on internal HDD. A few couple of things that might help you out.

Use the latest official beta from github (the pre-release one, not the one from 2021): https://github.com/ps2homebrew/Open-PS2-Loader/releases

While the compatibility lists are ok for reference, keep in mind that those are 5 years old already, many games don't even need special configs these days if you use the latest build. Lastly, the only thing I'd suggest to change in OPL is disabling PADEMU completely. It's brings more trouble than it's worth.

If you're on the latest build and still have problems, it's more likely a bad iso.

>> No.9989132

>>9989104
Yep, that's an ancient build (2019 looks like). The github is the official OPL, the one from "ps2-home" is a fork of the official, with it's own modifications. I just use the official these days, seems to be less bloated. The ELF files are executables, you just replace the old one and done (the configs and covers all remain).

I've never played The Bouncer. I got my PS2 a couple of years after launch when it was widespread that the game was only a couple or few hours long. It was hard to justify getting it when you're a kid and game purchases are limited. My friend had a copy, but it didn't work in some way or another. I was destined to never play it.
But for you, pal, I'll move it up my shortlist of things to play through OPL.

>> No.9989931

The thing is that it came out in a time where Square could do no wrong. Every game they released previously was hype as fuck full content. So when The Bouncer came out, everyone was very disappointed in how short and simple it was, with character clones from FF8 and animations recycled from Ehrgeiz. It was the first time everyone felt like Square was not as "godlike" as they seemed to be. You can play it now and enjoy it for what it is, sure, but you can't really blame anyone for still having a grudge over it.

same but i never really played the sequels properly, ratchet 1 was the first game i had for ps2 but i only played the sequels at my friends.

The first game is the best because it has the best music, dialogue and story are all great, sure they add a lot more weapons in the sequel but its kinda like vice city to san andreas comparison, if VC is a 10/10 SA is a 9, its still great but you can tell the quality ever so slightly dropped in favour of ALOT more game. I feel like if i owned 2 as a kid it would have been my favourite, its a true sequel but the first game has more soul

The first R&C is the game I sunk hours and hours into - I do think 2 and 3 are still good, but the first one will always have a place in my heart.

There could be an argument to say the first was a bit simpler in it's platforming focus, and so they got that bit really good, whereas 2 and 3 got a bit more sidetracked on mini games, but I did actually quite enjoy a lot of the mini games!

Also, and this is a factor I've realised in a lot of games for me - the way they animated Ratchet and the movement arcs of even things like the boomerang wrench attack made a lot of the melee attacks and jumping feel really lively, kinetic and satisfying when you chain up any sort of movement combo.

With good 3D action platformers, that sort of detail just tips things over from being pretty fun to really fun. Tomb Raider, Mario 64, hell even outliers like Jedi Outcast all have elements that get that right.

>he way they animated Ratchet and the movement arcs of even things like the boomerang wrench attack made a lot of the melee attacks and jumping feel really lively, kinetic and satisfying when you chain up any sort of movement combo.
I agree 100% everything in the original had a lot more effort and polish put into it from the animations, the dialogue, the worlds you visit, what really solidifies it for me though, and i usually dont rate story in videos as a priority but its just the best, the way ratchet starts out as a kind of anti-hero who is not really out to save the galaxy, he doesnt really like clank, but he sort of wins him over as the game goes on. In the 2nd game i've already forgot the story and i just played it at christmas, i just remember none of what you're doing makes any sense
also they really REALLY fucking butchered the remake holy shit i couldnt even finish it

I took the habit of downloading the latest build from github every month and try things myself. Yesterday I tested Cy Girls, which was one of the few games that I could never run on any opl, and it's working fine now (enable mode 2), despite all the documentation you find online saying it doesn't even boot.

yeah just like Resident Evil 4 and the ports of Monkey Ball on PS2 the extra DVD size didnt help with muffled audio and missing sfx and all the cutscenes turned into videos and all the Capcom 5 five games .
Also the gamecube Controller dindt had fewer buttons, the triggers could actually act like 2 buttons but barely any game used that.
And the analog control had much more degrees per angle than the PS2 controller .

Also no one cares about your quest to pose the PS2 as technically superior than the other ones, the most important thing here is talking about games.

RE4 was originally designed solely for the GameCube. Don't know about Monkey Ball as I'm not 6 years old, but I'll take your word for it.
>all the Capcom 5 five games
Pronoun Number 03 didn't make it to PS2, because it was so bad even content-starved GameCube owners didn't buy it.
>Also the gamecube Controller dindt had fewer buttons
Yes, it did. No clickable sticks, no select button, and missing a shoulder button. Even if you count each trigger as 2 buttons (which you shouldn't), it's still 2 buttons short. The triggers shouldn't be considered 2 buttons as to activate the second "button", the first "button" must be activated first, which makes it unusable for any actions not performed in sequence.
>And the analog control had much more degrees per angle than the PS2 controller
Not even sure what you're trying to say here. But the octagonal gates on the GCN controller are objectively worse when trying to use the sticks for anything other than cardinal & intermediate directions (i.e. the purpose of analog sticks).
>Also no one cares about your quest to pose the PS2 as technically superior than the other ones
The reply was to a post about the PS2 generally being inferior, which isn't the case. Didn't say PS2 was superior to Xbox so not sure how you've invented that idea.

Only 1 (one) of the PS2's 20 best selling games is less than 1.5GB - Jak & Daxter. The majority of the PS2's most popular games would be physically impossible on the GameCube without the assets being shittified or being a multi-disc mess. Your claim has no basis in reality, hence you haven't listed a single one of these "huge amount of ps2 games". You've corrected nothing because you haven't stated a single fact.
