Any of you tried the RK2023?
I was going to buy a RG35XX because I intended to play mostly 2D stuff but I remember finding the GBA more comfortable than the Pocket and this thing seems to have pretty good d-pad and buttons and noticeably better sound.

>> No.9951610

I have one and yeah it kicks ass ngl. I wish the chip was strong enough for DC and Saturn, although this is supposedly the best performing of all the rk3566 devices according to the JELOS and ArkOS devs. Otherwise the shape is perfect, love the d-pad and face buttons, and the screen + speakers are absurd at this price point.

It's fine. I'm not shitting my pants in excitement over the battery life, but it's certainly not bad either. I think 3.5 - 7 hours is probably the min/max range you should expect on a full charge depending on what you're playing. It has a 3500mAh battery, so the same as the RG353 line.

Is it worth getting a Zodiac to play Palm OS games? They're expensive compared to just getting a PDA

>> No.9952294

>>9952280
Hell no. Palm itself isn't that interesting, it was fun 20 years ago, but it's a relic now.

The very early palm/handheld PC stuff that runs on batteries has potential use cases in the modern day, but the lack of easy backup options on most devices and the fact they save everything into RAM limits them quite a bit.

>> No.9952298

>>9951780
They are easy to find on Amazon or eBay if you just search "handheld game", they're like fifteen dollars now, maybe less depending on the seller. Usually they have Adventure Island, Turtles, Mitsume Ga Tooru, and a bunch of older NES games

>> No.9952332

to answer OPs question, I think the only thing that would get me onto one of these handhelds is being able to play at minimum PS2 RPGs and other slow games with at least 10+ hours of battery life, plus easily exchangeable batteries and easy repair. I don't know if there are devices that can do the PS2 part, but I seriously doubt that these random ass china miracles are reliable for anything beyond becoming landfill fodder in 3 years or less. Tried several different GPD handhelds in the mid-late 2010s, and while I imagine power has come along, I can't imagine that build quality, reliability, or parts access has made any headway.

Th only reason i mention ps2 is because it has some games that interest me, but I pretty much only play RPGs on handhelds since they are difficult for me to get into if I'm not just sitting somewhere waiting to kill time.

>> No.9952359

I'm going to answer to OP as well.
I don't even need much power, if it runs PS1 I'm fine.
I do want good build quality, good battery life and excellent buttons and d-pad, and the only way to be sure of this last requirement is to test them myself, and there's so many of them for me to make a truly confident decision.
Right now the RK2023 seems the best contender for my needs.

yeah, it's hard to trust anybody making video reviews, since I don't think anyone in their right mind would bother buying every piece of garbage themselves to test and review it, and then anyone doing a review based on a sample is like a magazine journalist only worse; They don't have any paycheck beyond what they get from views, and so maintaining cushy relations with the crap manufacturers might be the only thing keeping them fed. Because now that the chips have enough power to run N64 and Dreamcast, even if they can't run them competently, they just feel compelled to stick analog sticks on the device and ruin the simplicity. They want to make sure they cover every base they can with a device and push them as far as the chip allows. No one wants to make a deliberate and clean device that knows exactly what its capable of.

I would love a device that has no more power than a Miyoo Mini but no sticks, no L2/R2 so that I can actually have full size L and R instead of all four being tiny and cramped and feeling like shit. It's good for SNES and below and GBA and below and can run them all full speed and that's it. I don't care that it doesn't have all the buttons for PS1, the device shouldn't have to push for everything.

ADHD not relevant here, probably. You used too much force on the wrong place and/or that board may have been shit built in the first place if you were able to snap all the joints like that. I guess you need to tap it to get it to actually be a menu button because they don't want you accidentally hitting it, but sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, and it always takes about 3 seconds to work if it does because it has to make save states or something. I've lost count of the number of times I've tried hitting menu+X only to be kicked out of the game instead of opening retroarch, so the detection is awful.

The menu problem is easy to fix.
Go to RetroArch > Settings > Input > Hotkeys > now change "Quit (Controller Combo)" to NONE
After that save. This will stop you leaving the game when you press the menu button and can now use the "Menu + X" hotkey or others "Menu + " hotkeys without problem. You can also do the same for the volume buttons just look for the hotkeys buttons.
You can blame the GarlicOS dev who left this hotkey as default.

>>defaults to hideous blurry scaling that looks awful because the resolution is too low. Turning it off leads to most systems using a tiny area of the screen, which is especially funny in tate games, which look like postage stamps.

If I disable the quit (combo), how do I quit games? It says "menu+4" should be quit, but what the hell is the 4 button? I couldn't see it assigned to anything in the menu. I guess I could just remap it to hat up/down, who needs mute or a fucking screenshot button.

And I can't find any setting that stops the volume keys being recognized as menu buttons. I still want to use them to adjust volume, although it's crazy they don't show an on-screen indication of volume level when you hit them, and I don't know why the audio setting is -30dB.

Video settings are kind of a pain to adjust, I wound up running crt-sony on most cores just because it looked alright and I didn't want to spend 10 hours trying to look through the rest of the overlays, but the innate problem of a lot of games just looking like shit because the screen isn't big enough to integer scale them is still there. Most PCE games play fine, but then you start R-type which has a non-standard resolution and it's a tiny postage stamp because it's too wide. Ideally I'd want to play the game integer scaled with the left and right cut off, but all I can do is smudge it if I want it any larger, which leads to hideous artifacting when you move up and down the screen thanks to the hell of non-integer scaling.

>If I disable the quit (combo), how do I quit games?
Just press "Menu + X" in a game which will go to the RetroArch Quick Menu, press B and there you can quit the game. That's how I do, but you can assign for other hotkey if you want.
>And I can't find any setting that stops the volume keys being recognized as menu buttons. I still want to use them to adjust volume, although it's crazy they don't show an on-screen indication of volume level when you hit them, and I don't know why the audio setting is -30dB.
That's probably the controls for the emulator not configured correctly. Load a game for the system that you are having this problem, access the RetroArch Menu "Menu + X", after that go to Controls, Port 1 Controls. See if you can find the volume button that is conflicting with the menu button. Press B, go to Manage Remap Files and Save Core Remap File.
In my case on the NES emulator the Menu button when I was pressing it was configured to use the A+B buttons together.
>Video settings are kind of a pain to adjust
I'm using a old version of GarlicOS so I don't know if the dev fixed in the newer version, but in my version there's a problem where everytime you load a game from any menu the image gets really blurry and dim. When this happens the way I fix the issue is I load the game and in game I press the power button to go in sleep mode and press power again to go back, after that the issue is gone. This doesn't annoys me because I just play one game at the time and don't keep changing systems, but if you are one of those guys that only plays a game for 10 minutes and keep changing games and systems that is probably going to annoy you.
So if are having this issue on GarlicOS I recommend you try other OS like MinUI and Batocera

Vol up/down are 10/11 respectively, and I can't see them anywhere but in the hotkey menu assigned to volume control. And it's an issue on every core, so maybe it's a new "feature" added to a newer version than you're using.

And that was how I was quitting, it's a shame there isn't a more convenient option, like pressing the menu key when you're in the quick menu just auto-closes it or something.

The other FWs seem like they don't offer as much control, as much hassle as it is to set overlays and scaling on a per-game basis, at least I don't have to pull out the SD card and do it all through ini files.

I finally ordered my white whale. It's nothing special but I have been excited to have one of these things for over two years now. I've never been able to find a legitimate one, all the internet ever had listed for me were shitty Famiclones that looked like it, but with the current Aliexpress sale Anbernic is having, they threw 200 of the clear black units (the colour I wanted, too) on sale for $40 CAD, so I got the full package + two week shipping for $45 Canadian. I cannot wait for it to arrive, it's going to be my main device for GameBoy games.

I already have an RG35XX but I mostly use it for PS1, Arcade, and PC titles. Was gonna wait to save up for a machine that can do N64, Saturn, PSP, and DreamCast games but I'm just using a bluetooth controller with my phone for now.

This. I hate the whole "Anbernig has the best d-pads in the business" line because their d-pads were fucking downgraded not improved. RG300 had an amazing d-pad that felt smooth. Current Anbernigs are stiff and apparently have issues with diagonals sometimes like the 35XX. But let's dogpile on Powkiddy instead for that same problem and not Anbernic because dogging on Powkiddy is easy and acceptable ;)

Android was genuinely awful for gaming before Android 7 or so. I forget exactly what changed, but before that there was serious input delay that was inherent in the OS, which made doing anything time sensitive a real pain the ass.

I bought a Miyoo Mini Plus a month and a half ago as my first third party emulation portable. Here's a few bullet points.

Pros:
>surprisingly high quality design and build quality for a chinese device
>in spite of small size, the face buttons and shoulder buttons feel intelligently designed
>giant screen with no drawbacks to the device's overall design
>virtually no software issues on onion os
>strong battery life
>user interface and process of adding games is very simple
>can play playstation games at full speed, which really impressed me
Cons:
>the battery readout was handled in a strange way (the current voltage the device is using is what displays as the battery life indicator, so you can fully charge the battery, then start up and play a playstation game only for the battery icon to show something like 70%, then when switching to an nes game jumps the battery back up to 99% because nes games take nothing to run)
>the audio when using headphones is a little low
>the fighting game genre is just not realistic to play on such a small device comfortably

All in all not bad. I just beat Snatcher on this thing.

How the fuck do you get Windows to recognize a partition of roms and shit on an SD card!? I spent literally all day today reading and watching guides trying to assign the stupid partition a drive letter and nothing works. I continuously get an error about it being out of date. I updated all the drivers and nothing. Same error. I literally uninstalled my usb and sd card drives and deleted any unkown drives. Same error.
I even tried using command prompts and 5 or 6 different partition apps to edit the drive letter and nothing works. Only the first partition shows up in the command list and on my computer drives. Some of the partition wizards say they successfully added a drive letter, even though it didn't, one made a bunch of useless icons for each drive I tried, and one said wondows will only recognize the first partition on a removable drive.

All the guides just show one click, assign letter and done.

Please help.

>I also found that I had to enable the analogue controller in the controller settings. By default it was set to digital so the thumb sticks were not being recognised as inputs.

Install the new OTA, that was a bug in the previous update. Basically a bug was found in the CPU that if you run it above 85 degrees it starts throwing random errors at you. It started happening because the update unlocked max performance of the SoC. the new OTA fixes that giving you the option of “battery saving, performance and extreme”. Extreme may lead to some crashes on a few chips (your system is one of them it seems). I was lucky and I can melt my chinkheld with the Cyrene mode without it crashing.

Don't buy the Walmart/Five Below handheld unless you can find the older version for a good price, they were good at first but they removed 200 games including most of the actual good ones (unless you only care about Tetris). FYE has good ones sometimes but be prepared to pay double the price for it. Retro FC Plus is good as it includes Mega Man 3 but it uses Mini USB power since it's an older model.

Anbernic's RG FC520 has Castlevania 1 and DuckTales iirc but more of a square form factor like LDK game and RG280v. Beyond that there's the pastel Game Box Plus ones which I haven't tried yet. Most of them at least have Mario, Contra, Turtles, Adventure Island, Mitsume Ga Tooru, a bunch of older NES games (Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, etc.) and sometimes a handful of shmups.

It depends on your budget. PowKiddy's Q90 and Q20 are nice because they support SEGA CD, TurboGrafx CD, PS1, and a bunch of other consoles. If you want dirt cheap though then probably the SF2000 or one of the other off brand devices

You can get used to the start button but select is basically unusable. Also still doesn't change that they're terrible placements in the first place. Besides, that's not even my biggest complaint about the buttons. My biggest pet peeve with my RP3+ is when I accidentally hold the left side too hard my volume starts skyrocketing up or down. Fucking retarded place to put volume keys. There's an option to prevent accidental Home button presses but nothing for the volume keys and those are the ones I need it for.

The sf2000 is too big. Budget is infinite. I have an rp3+ and previously had an rg351mp, rg350, rs97, dingo a320.
I’d like something along the power of an rs97, but with a nicer screen and without shitty analogs. I guess something with the power of a v90, but without the on/off problems and shit form factor.

qualms: battery life, gba only, faceplates were rare until only a few years ago and scratch easily, proprietary charger, the screen is comically small- but i beat minish cap and several rpg on it.
