Hey /vr, so I dusted off my Ocarina of Time cartridge the other day just to mess around. And I got in a big Zelda nostalgia kick. And I'm thinking of tooling around in the 64-bit Hyrule that I had been gone from for so long. Which has got me to thinking of all the secrets that were hidden in the game. Remember back in the day with the whole Triforce mess and the hunt for all manner of hidden stuff?

Does anybody think there may be some undiscovered tidbits still in the game (remember that the hidden Arwing was found only recently).

And besides that, what are some not-so-well-known hidden things (random grottos, etc.) and what are some curiosities that never got explained? (the clawmarks on the tree at Lake Hulia, the bird statue that tells you the time, etc.)

Discuss. I love video game mysteries.

I remember a long ass time ago, when I was new to the internet, I went to the OoT board on Gamefaqs and found a topic called "strange creature".

Some dude said he saw a pig-like enemy in Dampe's Grave, and the rumor spiraled out of control. Looking back it was obvious that he was lying out the ass but I was new to being online. I started talking to the people in that topic over AIM and eventually learned internet culture that way.

Also, your picture is really creepy. I'm not one of those faggot kids that's all "HOOOO LAVENDER TOWN" but that picture gives me some genuine willies.

If it was anywhere in the game, even as an unused asset of some sort, it would've been found by now. the only way we would be able to see that room at this point is if someone got their hands on that particular build of the game, if it was even in a playable state.

Yeah, I was scouring the Gamefaqs forums earlier to day and saw topics about it. I was thinking of going to Dampe's, but I didn't read enough to discern it was a fraud (I'll probably still visit, though, who'mIkiddin)

And the entrance to it is deep under the water in Zora's Domain. You can access it with Iron Boots if you get under the Ice as Adult Link, or by doing the rupee dive glitch as Child Link, but there's nothing really to see, just a weird square alcove deep underwater with nothing in it:

As great as I know it would be OP, OoT has got to be one of the most picked apart games ever. It's very unlikely you'll find something new, however, it is pretty fun to just explore.

Ya know, I kinda want someone to just put out versions of famous games where they just drop in random weird/creepy shit like that. Couldn't be that hard, could it? And it seems like it'd be fun to do too, with the concept->product path being so short and the resources so available.

>Ya know, I kinda want someone to just put out versions of famous games where they just drop in random weird/creepy shit like that.

That would be awesome.I'm surprised nobody's made any hacks based off of creepypastas like Ben Drowned and what-not, even. Anything as much as seeing a new character or a new type of enemy, or a different piece of music that plays in a certain event, that would be so worth it.

What I do actually hate are all the little "completest" secrets, like finding all the heart pieces or finding another random cave with money in it (unless it's like the one pictured above or the one with the freaking cow in it). If I were designing a game, I would want to hide stuff that would be more rewarding, something that really adds to the collective atmosphere of the game. Like a secret village or ruins or something small that doesn't really have a bearing on the game but is just there, and very hard to find. A place you'd want to come back and see again.

That's my rant, anyway.

>> No.994429

For me, most of the mystery nowadays comes from glitches. New glitches are actually still being discovered for this game. It's amazing what you can do, and it seems endless. The tower collapse skip was discovered only about a month ago, and I'm pretty sure Wrong Warp is only a year or two old. To me that's real mystery, stuff the developers didn't even intend, but is there anyway.

As for stuff they DID intend...I didn't discover the hidden room in ganon's castle years after playing. The one where, you use the Lens of Truth in the main room, and get to a room with Deku Scrubs and Fairies.

Also, that room in Gerudo Fortress, right at the end with just a table and chairs, leading to ABOVE your prison cell. I didn't know about that until recently and it blew my mind.

Glitches in concept don't interest me initially but they can certainly be cool in the way you described. I saw the snippet of the video where you can warp directly from the Deku Tree to the end of the game, and I'm tempted to try that out.

I remember someone made an incredibly detailed rumor about Jabu Jabu's lake being where the Triforce was. The sky was almost always golden as Adult Link, the monsters were hidden in caves, etc.
They backed this up with a graphics glitch that showed a triforce out of broken pixels if you stood on the cliff where the invisible skulltulas went to, stood at the right spot and looked towards the forest texture.

It did in fact, after roughly an hour of experimenting, make a graphical tear that looked like a miniature triforce.

There's all these hidden eggs, and beating the game shows three of them to you.
You were supposed to collect them all, and the key, and quickly switch cartridges from Kazooie to Tooie, but there ended up being hardware limitations on the N64 that prevented it.
You can still collect them all though, using cheats by spelling out long ass phrases on the floor of the sandcastle.

Oftentimes in design, you simply lack the time to fix old stuff. Thus instead you try to smooth things over as much as possible and get through it.

Frankly, I think that OoT had this amplified because of how much time went into it, and because of how fast-paced and prolific development was for it and for games at the time. The console reads the ROM off of an SD card by way of some software and hardware that converts or translates the ROM into such a state that the console can read it as if it were an actual ROM. I don't know much about the details, but that's the very broad strokes of it.

When I was a kid I got an Xploder(?) cheat cartridge and went through all the game I had beaten to fuck around. Goemon, Goldeneye etc.

When I played Zelda I used a levitation cheat thing and explored all kinds of places as child link.

I found the triforce, it is above Hyrule Castle.
After Zelda tells you about the history of Hyrule and stuff and shows the three goddesses explode at a point in the sky to make the triforce, in the room where you see Ganondorf looking tasty as fuck through the window, levitate out of the room and the Triforce is somewhere above. I found it accidentally when trying to get to G-Dorf and stab him.

I know it's just something kept in memory to be quickly loaded for the cutscene, I just like how it happens to be in a place where Link/Zelda/GDorf are at the same point in time, what with each of them representing one part of it.

So I've been googling OoT like crazy and I discovered this today. It's from the Zelda Universe forums:

>okay, i need some help. i am looking for anyone who still has an original copy of ocarina of time versions 1.0 or 1.1. Back years ago, when i still had a hard copy of the game (which i think was a 1.1) i remember a glitch I encountered. It was the first time i play OoT, and i started up my game. After the intro to the game, without having a clue what to do, i think i remember going outside of the tree house, not talking to anyone, picking up no rupees, and headed straight to the lost woods. While entering, going to the area with the bullseye hanging from the tree in the woods I encountered twinrova. After all these years, i am curious to see if anyone else has encountered this glitch. it is unfortunate i do not own my n64 anymore or a hard copy of the game. please, anyone it would be greatly appreciated if you could help find this for me. thank you

I don't know if he's bullshitting or not but I kinda want to go home and try this right away.

This guy kinda comes off as a little douchey...

Anyways, I just played a little bit of Oot and came across a hilariously creepy situation that I'm not sure was intentional.

I picked up in my mostly-completed game. Didn't want to dungeon crawl so I went 'splorin'. Decided to race Dampe's ghost.

After my price, I went through the door, but instead of climbing the ramp into the windmill, I looked around (I'll be honest, I wanted to see if I'd catch a glimpse of the fabled El Puerco).

For the hell of it I played the Song of Storms to see if the windmill guy would shout from the other room or something neat like that. Nothing extraordinary happened, so I continued into the next room: the windmill.

The cave music from Dampe's area was still playing; it didn't carry over into the windmill theme. And the phonograph dude was cranking away furiously, as usual, his eyes all evil rage.

And no windmill music. Just the ambient cave soundtrack. And the cranking of the phonograph. It was a bit... unsettling, haha.

I don't recall that happening before... doesn't the windmill theme always pick up when you enter from the grave passage?

This is probably about 9 years ago at this point to the details are fuzzy, but here I go.

One morning I woke up and immediately turned on my N64, itching to play some Zelda. At this point I'd already beaten the game many times before. The file I started was young Link in the well under Kakariko Village, which is creepy to begin with. But as I progressed through the well, I would hear this blaring deep noise that would cut in out of nowhere and then disappear as quickly as it came. It cropped up maybe two times before the third time, where the game screen went completely green with Link's model dropping through the floor and falling while the noise blared. I freaked out, jumped up, and shut off the console. Didn't play any more that week.

>> No.1014115

Sounds like something I ran into with Majora's Mask.

Basically, what happened is that I was doing a run of the Kafei/Anju sidequest--something I'd never beaten before. I had looked up guides, tried my damndest, worked at the thing for a month, with nothing. Tonight however, I'd managed to beat everything. Literally all that was left was waiting for them to marry in the inn. So I was waiting with Anju, and there's less than a minute on the clock, when suddenly I hear birds fluttering, and the game suddenly shows the Song of Soaring animation (with no music), freezing halfway through it.

I flipped my fucking shit and turned off the console. I was so pissed I didn't play Majora's Mask for several YEARS, and I still haven't beaten the kafei/anju sidequest.

I hadn't played my N64 for a while and started up Majora's Mask, First I noticed my save files were gone, when I started up a new file and watched the beginning, just before I could move Link just died. When he woke up again the music was gone and I could here the sounds from skullkid and Link which you here in the first cutscene and litteraly all my items were ocarina's. I was almost crying at this point.
But when I blew in the cartridge and started up the game again, everything was fine and my save files were back too

I've had the exact same glitch happen to me.

I had no hearts so after every cutscene link would die. All items were OoTs and during cutscenes link would randomly switch to fierce diety but he was halfway through the floor. I thought it would be fun to keep playing and see what else would happen but I discovered I could never learn the song of time because I already had the ocarina. After that I blew in the cartridge and everything was fine again. It was quite an unsettling experience.

I realize I am incredibly late, but you realize the N64 was not 64-bit, right? It was 32-bit, just like the rest of the Fifth Generation consoles. The sixth and seventh generations were also 32-bit, and we're only now just entering the 64-bit era partially with PS4 and XBone's x86-x64 architectures. And PCs finally being forced into x64 architecture.

When I was a kid and played OOT, I always felt like I was actually growing up, turning into Adult Link. Every single thing, from the attitude of the NPCs to the monsters to the music to even the graphics (particularly the perspective) felt like how an adult should feel - everything all serious with no time for fun, the adventure's over and everyone expects something of you now and you feel emphatically compelled to live up to their expectations.

The game is a masterpiece.

I always wanted to do a Hard Mode hack

It would be pretty similar to 3 heart minimal run, but With actually removed any posibilities of getting any Health inside Dungeons and removed all bottles/fairy fountains/gossip stones/heart containers/Secret spots for big fairies/minor treasure chests and copypaste gottos that contain them and enemy drops. Also remove some major items like deku nuts/sticks/bombs/bomchus/scarecrow/slingshot/shields/gauntlets/scales/hookshot/tunics/ocarina/seeds/spells/elemental arrows/small keys/Big Keys/Map/compass/the minimap/magic/

Basically what you'd have is the boomerang, hammer, bow, sword, heavy and float shoes if possible as selectable items. Effectively eliminating any need for a start/pause button if C up is used as an item placeholder.

This would require some minor boss pattern reworking and changing some swithes around, With Heavy alteration to water temple and some puzzle room since no more hookshotting all over the place.

Rupees aren't going to be a thing neither the skulltulas. Maybe make it a sidequest for the well for infinite arrow refill.

I also wanted to remove some actions and sounds from link like rolling, backflipping/sideflipping and of course make him only make a sound when he takes damage.

Also speed up text, remove some cutscenes related to the triforce and rearange trigger events to not be dependant on the ocarina. Of course remove all text from navi. Also make enemies attack 20% faster. Generally one extra enemy if the engine would handle it, being swarmed by stalfos and lizardos is already challenging, but I Always felt they were too slow to strike.

Generally change the order of the dungeons around, I'm thinking Shadow Temple first and make Kakariko really barren of NPCs, Also remove the clone NPCs like the forest children.

basically really strip the game down of all superfleous shit to bare mechanics and make it feel like a really gritty adventure.

Yeah, I played around with it when I first read about it on Odyssey. Doing a swordless run and bypassing all the annoying roadblocks was fun. I remember trying to get into water temple without iron boots by using the hoover hookshot from the horse glitch and clipping through from underneath. Entering Fire temple as a child was interesting.
