I want to mod my PS2 and I'm thinking of trying out Free McBoot. Does anyone have experience with it? It seems pretty simple to set up and use. I heard it's installed on the memory card, can said memory card still be used for saved games?

>> No.9953621

>>9953608
Yeah I have experience with it. It was a pain-in-the-ass and took months to get working lol
I use a separate memory card for FMCB and try to keep all my saves on another memory card but sometimes I accidentally save to the FMCB card, but it hasn’t been an issue (yet).
I use FMCB to load games from my SSD. It works well but took a lot of troubleshooting so beware which SSD/HDD you buy lest it’s incompatible/not entirely compatible with PS2.

>>9953621
I was going to use a USB stick lol. Do you think it has to be a HDD/SSD? A Youtube tutorial I watched used a USB. It also said it has to be formatted to FAT32.

>> No.9953629

PS2 Slim: FMCB on the memory card
PS2 FAT with internal HDD: You clone an image to the HDD that already has all you need. No need for memory card.

There's two kinds, official and "gamestar"
Official Sony only takes IDE, not SATA so it's kinda inconvenient. Although it does have mods for it that remove IDE and add SATA. Official ones also have ethernet available, that's why they're called network adapters.
Gamestar is chinesium but I get the feeling it's what most people use these days. The ethernet port on them is fake. Comes with SATA only.
I went with official and an old IDE drive, never touched the ethernet.

If you have a fat PS2 you can clone an image to an HDD and by using a USB stick with the necessary software you can create your own FreeMcBoot memory cards.

I was playing along with the other anon. In reality, I just use OPL like a normal person for PS2 games when I do play them. But for PS1 I actually did to just burning a CD and playing that way. It's really not hard to: even if yes, it isn't as easy as fucking dragging and dropping an image onto a hard drive, it's still not a lot of work with my setup and POPstarter's compatibility will always be compromised since it's rather dated software emulation on an already weak system.

Nowadays, I just play PS1 games on a PSOne with FreePSXBoot and it just werks for me. Having no nice art sucks, but it's a small price to pay for being able to play ROMhacks or games that cost $100 on eGay.

Any model after the 7000 series is unsupported (PS2s manufactured after 2007), it's easier to spend $5 on an unofficial memory card with FMCB preinstalled. It's great for loading gameshark codes onto your favourite games and doing cool shit like fly hacks, playing your games on an SMB server instead of wearing out your laser, using an upscaler to play your games in HD (need a decent adapter). Definitely worth it.

You can get an aftermarket one fairly cheap online with a SATA connection, stock comes with an IDE. Aftermarket one doesn't actually have a CAT5 connection(at least none of the readily available and cheap ones which is all I've seen). That will save you the trouble of finding a good condition IDE drive. They also make a replacement board for the official network adapters that replaces the IDE connector with a SATA connector so you can use a modern drive. I think the last stable OpenPS2Loader only supports up to 2tb but I think they've had success with larger drives in some of the more recent versions. Or at least I read that on the internet.

I got a FMCB card with different versions of HDL/OPL already loaded and an aftermarket SATA network adapter off Amazon for like $25 total a while ago. No network adapter but I didn't intend to or have I wanted/needed to try network loading.

If you like 6th gen games it's definitely worth doing. It's nice that you can play most 6th gen games on original hardware with no mod chips or original copy.

It works fine for just playing ps2 iso's from an hdd.

The config options are pretty shit compared to swiss on the gamecube though. Using custom resolutions (GSM) always fucks up the centering and scaling of the video output. Half the games won't even boot properly with non-default resolutions. On the gamecube with swiss it just works.

Yes, the PS2 has USB 1.1 ports that are literally slower in terms of data transfer speeds than its DVD ROM drive.

Most games won't run at all from a USB stick, and the ones that do will have extremely long loadtimes. It's the objectively worst way to play PS2 games. If you're stuck on a slim than either burn games onto physical DVDs or look into network loading (which has its own set of problems).

>> No.9959758

>>9959709
That's what I thought. OPL looks cool but playing off the USB port doesn't sound like a good idea.

>> No.9959851

>>9959758
OPL is what you use when playing off of a hard drive as well.

The compatibility is pretty good these days, and the side effect of having significantly reduced loadtimes (even the slowest ancient IDE hard drive strill transfers data much faster than a 4X DVD-ROM drive) is pretty nice as well. It also bypasses region locks, so it's a nice way to be able to play import games on native hardware.

Even if you're stuck on a slim it's still nice to softmod it, you can use stuff like ESR to run burned games without any hardware modifications, and while the homebrew scene isn't huge there is some fun stuff to be had (including weird shit like a native port of Mario 64 and other stuff like Beats of Rage). There are some emulators for older systems, but nothing mind blowing. Lastly you can use SMS to run standard definition movies or play MP3s if your PS2 is hooked up to a better sound system than you computer is for some reason.

>>9959472
What game/tonyhax version are you using? There was a closed issue on github where it didn't recognize the tray opening/closing with some games. It doesn't need anything other than the save file exploit and program file on the memory card.
