9947428 No.9947428 [Reply] [Original]

In terms of sheer game quality, this is the best handheld ever made. I find it strange that so many people seem to hold GB and GBC in such high esteem, since to me, those consoles had maybe 10 truly good games each. Meanwhile, GBA was a fucking goldmine. It had plenty of shovelware, mediocre SNES ports and the like, but man, it had some seriously fucking good games too. Wario Land 4, Mega Man Battle Network, Advance Wars 2, Aria of Sorrow, Metal Slug Advance, Sonic Advance, Grunty's Revenge, Pac-Man Collection, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance... loads of other stuff. I fucking worshipped this thing as a kid. When DS rolled around, I was floored by how much the quality had dropped. I honestly can't think of a single game on DS that could touch shit like WL4 or AW2. This thing was one of God's greatest gifts to gaming.

the DS had some great games (Like Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, Sonic Rush, Solatorobo, the Ace Attorney series, Devil Survivor 1 and 2 etc) but the GBA had so many great games, and being basically a hybrid of a 16 and 32 bit system on a time when 2D games were a rare sight on consoles this little handheld brought a wind of fresh air
The only downside i can think of is the sound, the soundchip of the GBA was pretty bad quality

OK OP you may have done well today. Real and straight.

I think the hype and comfiness of the GBA made me overconfident in the DS. I bought in earlier and was salty af for two years straight before anything decent came out. PKMN Pearl was the last handheld game I ever bothered with and it's probably why I don't own handhelds anymore.

I spent most of its early life playing hits such as... Ridge Racer, Asphalt Urban, Feel the Magic XXY or whatever tranny nonsense, and... Drill Dozer. And then the PSP turned out to be such a 10/10 piece of hardware that the DS felt like a toy. I just don't have fond memories with that hardware.

In defense of the DS, it does have some pretty good Castlevania games, and Mario Kart DS is easily better than Super Circuit imo, even without the added online. Plus it had Animal Crossing.

I agree that the GBA is fantastic though. The Sonic Advance series, Nigthmare in Dreamland, Crash: The Huge Adventure, Wario Land 4, Super Monkey Ball Jr, Crazy Taxi: Catch a Ride, SEGA Arcade Gallery are among my favorites. The first WarioWare game is pretty fun too. I have a V90 but I've long debated getting myself pic related since it's closer to the AGB-001.

I prefer the GBA SP (model AGS-101). I have small hands, so I played it a lot.
I bought a new one 5-7 years ago but accidentally dropped when entering a bus. That felt very bad.
The GBA has a lot of interesting obscure titles like Magical Vacation, Juka and Monophonic Menace, Klonoa Heroes, Tomato Adventures, Magi Nation (the Japanese game -- not the NA one), and others that I am interested in playing in the future, a lot of which were fan translated.
If I had to pick my top 5 GBA games that I've beaten:
Harvest Moon: FOMT
Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Heartbreak
Petz Vet
Mother 3
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
I have many GBA games I want to play soon like FFT:A, Metroid Fusion, the obscure titles previously listed, and so on.
I wish Densetsu no Stafy would get an English translation. It seems better than the DS version.

The GBA Player video carts were an interesting innovation for the time period. If im not mistaken they managed to fit the entire Shrek movie on a GBA cart that sells for like $50 to $100 now. Silly but fascinating from a technical perspective.

I dont think those video carts can be emulated either for some reason but i cant remember why.

The GBA and the DS are two of my favorite libraries in general. Both are fantastic little devices, though the DS line definitely had some build quality hiccups

eh, I hold it in high regards because I don't like to see them as separate consoles with distinct game library. They are but the similar naming and backwards compatibility makes it eh. They exist, but only as hobbyist consoles like the Arduboy that have worse performance in almost every way vs the original Game Boy, and are closer to stuff like the Pokemon Mini. Stuff like that does try to fit in today by being extra small though, so it's easy to keep with you even with the big phones that people fill their pockets with today. Maybe we'll get lucky and some company will take the idea further.

Pokemons

Harry Potter I
Harry Potter II (sadly no 3)

And this is without mentioning hidden gems only I like or simply alright games like the rayman port. I won't let you pretend there was NOTHING until Zero came along, or I guess Wario...

It isn't an entirely out of the blue comparison. Keep in mind that Nintendo wasn't entirely sure if the DS would be widely accepted at first, and that the GBA spent about half its life competing with the DS. Consider:
>the Game Boy Micro came out a full year after the DS had been released
>those GBA video cartridges with full movies on them didn't hit the market until a year after the DS had been released
>Pokemon Mystery Dungeon got a dual release on the GBA and DS a year after the DS came out in Japan, and 2 years after it came out in the US
>Nintendo continued to release 1st party games for the GBA through 2006, 2 years after the DS came out, with only the last year of the GBA's life not seeing first party titles
It wasn't until 2006 that I saw someone playing on a DS (I had seen the boxes in stores but had never really looked at them), then bought my own later that year with money I earned that summer.

I agree, anon. Pre-rendered graphics are the best. I've always been fascinated by the castle market in OoT, for one. It's hard to describe, but they have a certain allure to them that hand drawn art simply lacks. All those pre-rendered assets were once full 3D models; they had depth and detail, they contained mysterious things that we never ended up seeing. They feel alive, where hand drawn art (as it applies to video games) reveals all of itself at first glance.

And those don't even scratch the surface. Most of the GB and GBC greats (your list included) easily blow most any GBA game out of the water.

I'll add some more great ones (from off the tip of my head) to it: 3 Wario games, first two Mario Land games, two+ Mario sports games, 6 Kirby games, 5 Mega Man games, Tetris Plus, Tetris DX Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge, Grandia: Parallel Trippers, Zelda: LA (very different experience from DX, which is another great game), Azure Dreams, Bomberman Quest, Daikatana, Quest: Brian's Journey, Donkey Kong ('94), Star Ocean: Blue Sphere, Columns GB, Samurai Kid, Gimmick Land (from the Gigaleak), Avenging Spirit, Game Boy Camera kino, Catrap, the 3 DK Lands, Batman: The Animated Series, Survival Kid, Resident Evil Gaiden, Bionic Commando, DQ Monsters 1-2 (3 games), Mario's Picross, the two Mickey Racing games, Sutte Hakkun GB, and Looney Tunes (plus spin-offs, such as the two Speedy Gonzales games).

Plus (not sure if these are covered by your last post) the many Pokemon spin-off games: Pokemon TCG, Pokemon Pinball, Pokemon Puzzle Challenge, and yes, Pokemon Picross from the Gigaleak, all of which are amazingly fun games.

When reading Nintendo Power recently I was surprised to see how the DKC graphic style changed from an awesome novelty with plenty of its own beauty to a standard, generic way of churning out barely-professional-looking GBA games cheaply. I'd been amazed as a kid by Rare's introduction of the style on the SNES, and then I ignored the GBA entirely for whatever reason, so I missed the era in which pre-rendered 3D graphics were commonplace. On the GBA, this graphics technique was surely no longer "all the rage" among players - instead it was all the rage among shovelware developers who didn't have the resources to do a good job with it. If any players still liked it, it's because they were weirdos with weird tastes or kids with the low standards of kids.
