What's the appeal of FF Tactics? I've heard it's one of the best FF Games but it didn't look too special from the snippets of gameplay i've seen.

the game isn't very well balanced, but the graphics and music are cool, and the story is an adaptation of the war of the roses

Game of thrones type story, focusing on class struggles and religion. Can’t say I’ve played a better story game. I also absolutely love the combat, but when I first saw it I was like fuuuuuck that. No overworld? Yeah I was way wrong but this type of gameplay isn’t for everyone for sure.

Fuck the story lmao, you can create some interesting overpowered builds, fuck around with the beasts and do a beast only playtrough even

>> No.9944926

you can’t get the full experience just watching videos. playing it on original hardware let’s you experience the full on boredom and pain of slowly manually selecting, positioning, and attacking with each individual unit then waiting several minutes for the enemies to do the same. but if you enjoy chess, you will also not like this because it’s even more slow pace and if your main dude dies it’s game over. I love final fantasy but this is truly awful.

Someone get this guy a brightly colored 3rd person shooter or a brown colored fps that’s free to play and comes w loot boxes to pwn all the other cool kids. Chess is for fags and tactics is for bigger fags emmaright?

It's good but not the mainstream choice for favorite FF so all the tryhards who want to flaunt their gamer cred flock to it. Kinda like the guys who say Rondo of Blood or Bloodlines is the best Castlevania.

>> No.9944982

It's a Matsuno game, and his games are always really different from mainstream FF games

>> No.9945001

i never really much cared for any vidya story but its pretty grounded for ffslop. people seem to like it. i just found the combat and strategy way more fun in this game than most rpgs. yeah theres tons of overpowered shit but if you just play it more or less normally without trying to go ham i think its pretty fun. also id honestly recommend playing this game on emulator so you can speed up your random battles. they are quite a time sink.

Amazing soundtrack, good story, and the job system applied to a strategy RPG is one of the most genius things to ever happen to gaming.

>> No.9945149

>>9944845
1. The game is immediately challenging
2. The player becomes interested in the expansive job system because of the challenge
3. The job system allows customization and reward
4. All the units have names, and you get personally invested in them due to the difficulty
5. The story isn't a forgone conclusion, even if you weren't interested in it originally, you become more interested in it as it turns in new directions, all the way up to the end
6. You didn't realize it on your first playthrough, but the game is actually easy, so it invites replayability
7. Music and art looks good too!
8. Destiny lies in my hands. Stop all movement. Galaxy Stop!

You’ve had an additional 25 years of games to choose from. Games like Tactics Ogre and Fire Emblem had very limited releases in North America, if they had releases at all. Hell, I spent YEARS looking for a copy of Ogre Battle for the SNES. I ended up getting the Playstation port. Yes, I probably could’ve mail-ordered it but I was kind of a dumbass.

He has a point. Tactics is a hard game to get into. It has some really cool ideas but also some serious flaws. It is also terribly slow. It benefits greatly from an emulator with a fast-forward button.

Desu, I've played FFT on original hardware and I don't know what the hell you're talking about with the game's battles being slow. The only thing that really pissed me off was not being able to skip cutscenes and needing to mash buttons to speed up text, though.

>Desu, I've played FFT on original hardware and I don't know what the hell you're talking about with the game's battles being slow.
random battles in most jrpgs take like 10-30 seconds. boss fights a couple of minutes. in fft there is no such thing as a short random battle. they are going to take like 5 minutes minimum. boss battles arent really much longer than random battles though. its a time consuming game to play if you are just grinding to level up your characters. its also kinda retarded how its just better to leave 1 enemy alive so your characters can just whack each other for job points so you dont have to sit thru a bunch of enemy turns. im not sure how anyone could say the game isnt slow

>> No.9946369

>>9946294
The battles do take time, but they're more lucrative than your usual 10-30 second JRPG battle. Usually at least a couple of characters will have enough JP for the next ability you want.

>> No.9946374

Yea true…. Idk tho kind of to be expected w a title like Final Fantasy, but yeah I get your point. It was better when it wasn’t so heavy handed.

True, unless you are already overpowered as hell from grinding. But you don't have to grind to beat FFT and you do not have to grind much if you just want to get most of the overpowered combos. You grind to just get them marginally faster, as is the case with FFV/VI funnily enough.

Random battles are also completely optional, and (You) can just soft reset to skip them, but that's clunky as hell admittedly.

The dna of his work is very clearly still in the game. Characters talk like they're in a stage play the way they do in all of his works (and no that's not just localization, the dude that translated most of his stuff very closely collaborated with Matsuno line-by-line, which is important because Matsuno is kind of a control freak and part of the reason he left Square to begin with is because he couldn't run his projects like a dictatorship), it has his classic story of "it's about politics until suddenly it's about gods and demons", etc.
I'm pretty sure most of the stuff that isn't him and came in after he left was the game's mechanics.

I should've mentioned the translator's name in that, it's Alex O'Smith. He's great, he also did Crimson Shroud and Madworld. And most famously, he's the reason Phoenix Wright has the ridiculous setting change it does because Capcom told him to and as a result, is probably the sole reason people care about PW in the west.

not any of those anons, but they are right. The game is gorgeous, but instead of having a more direct fast-paced TRPG a la Front Mission 3, FFT overcomplicates it and there's a lot of menu clicking before you can do a basic action
