Where do you stand on high resolution texture and sprite replacements?

Really depends on the implementation. The Wonder Boy 3 remake is a good example of this where they are additional animation frames and it helps the old controls and new art jibe very well. Worst example is most of the HD remix titles of the 2010s where they just slap gaudy newly drawn sprites over the original game but change nothing else.

>> No.9944976

no

>> No.9944993

My opinion of them depends a lot on how well they emulate the original style. While I’ve never gone out of my way to use mods like that, some like the HD Mario Kart 64 pack that came out some time ago look pretty good because the guy who made it took the time to do faithful recreations of the old models to make the sprites with. Other times however, someone doesn’t even try to emulate the original style and just makes it look like a generic 2010s indie game.

From a quick gloss over in the thread, looks like the project is either in limbo, or development moved inside a Discord server. So until an actual finished link is posted, I think it would be safe to say this is vaporware.

>But I want it to not actually look like an NES game

Who asks for this

I looked at some compilation videos - Even the ones that aren't absolutely garish and amateurish (Most of them) still feel like they are just changing the original art for the sake of doing so. Part of experiencing these games is experiencing their original art and sound. Slapping HD sprites and replacing the soundtrack with modern guitar remixes just seems like a pure novelty at best and dangerously anachronistic at worst.

I guess if you've completely exhausted a game and want to see it with a fresh coat of paint on this fits the bill, but most people who exhaust games look to stuff like Randomizers to squeezer more out of the game, not swap Marios sprite with a render of his NSMB model

I don't hate the idea, especially ones like the Mesen Zelda and Mega Man packs that manage to keep a consistent art style. It reminds me of stuff like Super Mario All-Stars. But I can't stand shit like slapping hi-def textures onto early 3D, low poly games, it always looks worse.

I wish they had a better vision than just generically "high res" everything into a seemingly random visual style. Like there's no reason for Zelda II to look like a modern indie game. The first thing I think that should be done with this is to use the same colors as the NES but remove the palette limitations. You can make the games look surprisingly different that way without making it look alien.

I would love to be able to hack NES games to add even one additional color per sprite. Then the game’s original style could be preserved while making everything look better.

For the first Zelda, I really think giving a black outline to the sprites would go a long way towards making the game look nicer. The Mesen pack mentioned by a few people in here doesn’t look good to me - it looks too much like a flash game with no regard towards the reference material.

It's a case by case thing for me, but the majority of the time I'm not looking for these kinds of mods. The graphics replacement must feel like it actually belongs in the game, matching the OG art style and to some degree the technical limitations... this is really hard to pull off. It's not quite a sprite/texture replacement but my all time favorite mod was one that swapped PC FF7s overworld models with the battle ones. They also replaced every NPC with 'battle' models that were extremely faithful. The new graphics 100% looked like they belonged in the game and greatly improved the impact of various cutscenes.
