This unassuming Gameboy "remake" of an arcade game/puzzle hybrid from 1994 has better platforming mechanics than 99% of platformers ever made. It had the fucking triple jump and somersault before Mario 64. The whirl jump before Mario Sunshine. The roll jump before Odyssey or whatever. It really doesn't get the credit it deserves.

Game Boy games in general have not been given their due for years and unfairly dismissed as bad ports and shovelware, however that is changing.

why does Donkey Kong look so friendly here while Mario looks like the bad guy.

DK and JR are just horsing around, Mario doesn't figure it out until the very end. At the end of the day the four gather for a commemorative photo and DK feels embarrassed about everything and Mario is happy.

This game was co-developed by Nintendo and Pax Softnica by a very small team. The main designer was Takao Shimizu from EAD, who surprisingly didn't do too much after this.

The whole thing was a stage show. Mario warms up the audience by showing off his moves if you sit on the title screen for a while.

It was released the same year as DKC, which would obviously go on to be the dominant look and feel for the DK character for many years.

They even had the Donkey Kong Land trilogy for the GB that further obscured things.

The Mario vs DK series on the GBA and DS was trying to be its spiritual successor with similar movement mechanics and stages, but it somehow wasn't quite the same.

wrong. the GB is an overrated system that people mostly herald for its 1st party lineup.

theres only at most 20 GB B&W games actually worth playing, and most of them were published by nintendo. even "classics" like megaman V and final fantasy adventure pale in comparison to the console counterparts. the damn thing had over 1000 games and you dont hear about the rest

There's a lot of shit but there's also a lot more than 20 games worth playing. The library is huge.

There’s a Star Trek shmup which sounds intriguing but of the ones I’ve played that are top tier non mainline titles:
F1
Golf
Bionic commando
The turtles games are fun
Final fantasy games
Dragon quest games
Contra
Fucking street fighter and killer instinct?? Yeah I actually played the SF cart a lot growing up.
Batman
Best version of Tetris.

Idk I feel like the gameboy had a lot of good titles, but for as long as it was around, probably should’ve been more.

You would have no reason to think otherwise, it didn't really have the best cover art either.

No one wanted to be that kid at school with the baby game boy version when you could be the chad with Donkey Kong Country at home instead, which as I said came out the same year.

The one thing that I will remember the most is that this game was used as a 'soft launch' title for the Super GameBoy. As it was the first to take full advantage of the SGB features, with using the additional colour modes for title screens, adding additional audio via the SNES. In NA it was released on the same day as the SGB... along with Tetris 2? It was the one that Nintendo promoted the most with it.

It actually got good reviews at the time of release. Game Boy games don’t get much attention on here bc anons never actually leave the house.

It's one of the few games with SGB support that isn't just 'adding borders/certain palettes for certain scenarios'.

Makes sense since it came out 2 weeks before the SGB did.

yup. luckily you can still redeem yourself if you team up with your brother and fight turtles.

>> No.9947202

I like how the game teaches you the new mechanics with humorous little cutscenes after each boss. At the start of the game you have no idea how many things you can do as you play the arcade levels just how you would do in the original (which reinforces the assumption that it's a simple remake), but on replay you will breeze through them in seconds with backflip and headstand.

>> No.9947209

can some connoisseur tell me if DK's kidnapper past is still canon?

>> No.9947231

Classic DK is Cranky, still an old bastard. It's not clear if modern DK is Junior (some games claim he is, some that he's his son), but I prefer it that way since he's always been the hero.
The Mario movie added a lot of confusion though, if it counts, since Mario and the Kongs never met before, and there's also another "Mario" playing an in-universe version of the arcade Donkey Kong called Jumpman.

What is "canon"? Kidnapper DK is almost certainly not canon in the movie, but I would think that some version of the events of Donkey Kong "happened" in whatever the canon of the video games is.

How can Donkey Kong be on a separate timeline to Super Mario Kart when DK Jr. is in SMK and DK Jr. doesn't exist until Donkey Kong 2? As for SMB, I assume this is possible on the Mario and Bowser are friends timeline because the entire game is stage play. But too many games are missing.

The one feature missing is a time attack mode. Once you master the advanced movement options you can breeze through many levels ignoring the easy path, but there are no best times to beat nor ways to record it. The game keeps track of the time you had left actually, but only to calculate how many extra lives you get. And when you're good that's pointless.
