9943491 No.9943491 [Reply] [Original]

I once saw this series described on an ancient video game website as a "series of games that everyone had played but nobody really enjoys" and that description always stuck with me. Super is the best one IMO but the -vania ones aren't bad either.

I much prefer the evolution of the Wonder Boy series.

What? The games are great, I enjoyed them a lot, especially 2 and 3. 1 is really good as well and really impressive for 1986, but past some point (past the 200 or 300 death toll) I was only keeping on because of pride so I could say to myself that yes, I beat this game. It genuinely is the one of hardest NES game I've beaten if not the hardest. Normies that claim Castlevania/Contra/Zelda 2 are "Nintendo hard" have no fucking clue

>> No.9943525

>>9943518
Yeah the Adventure Island NES trilogy, especially the original game is always left out of the "toughest NES games" conversation. I only beat the first one by using an infinite lives code with the Game Genie, and it still took me over 2 hours, some of those last few stages are maddening.

Fuck that guy. Adventure Island and Bomberman are both examples of how good Hudson Soft were at their job.
Also, my favorite is Adventure Island 3.

This is nonsense.
The first one is hard as hell but pretty good, 2 and 3 are legitimately some of the best 2D platformers ever made.

I really like 3 but the multipath system with the eggs is nonsense, I'd like it more without a different system. Just have a map screen with branching paths or something.

>>9943728
The level of autism required to do it without is too high even for me

Both Wonder Boy and Adventure Island are great, but the original WB is the best game from either series.

Why? it's basically the same game as AI1, but with annoying music instead of catchy music.
AI 2 and 3 are much better game than either WB or AI1.

>I really like 3 but the multipath system with the eggs is nonsense

I think you mean 2, it determines your route depending on which egg you'll break in bonus round. And to get through the easiest and the most straightforward route, you're almost always have to pick 1st egg.

3 lets you "skip" levels and go other ways instead by choosing that option in hidden rooms.
It's not even pretends to be random like in 2. I always ignored it when I was a kid and just went the "usual" way but with skipping the entirety of island 2 because that seemed like a cool secret feature

I actually like the presentation, it's sharper than the NES look.
>AI 2 and 3 are much better game than either WB or AI1.
Probably true but the laser focused gameplay of the first games just appeals to me more. I'll take SMB1 over World or SMB3 for the same reason, it's more about intensity than variety and the "console" feeling isn't as strong

I see I got the two games mixed up. Probably because I played them at the same time (literally, iirc I started 2, then completed 3, then went back to 2)

The weird split between Wonder Boy and Adventure Island always amazed me since both series went in very different directions but maintained a high level of quality also the fact that three of the Wonder Boy games got remakes this console generation by three different studios is also amazing, sadly the Adventure Island series has gotten nothing, no new entry or remake. not even a collection like Castlevania and Contra got and it wasn't even put on the Switch Online thing. Hopefully the new generation will play Master Higgins adventures through emulation since Konami can't be bothered to do the bare fucking minimum.

you need to play new adventure island on pc engine

its a near perfect platformer. controls dont suck ass and the tempo is speedy. you can really get into a "zone" of mind while playing

Super II is pretty good but it's kind of weird they throw out almost all the iconography of the series to make a Metroidvania Zelda 2 - seriously you go from running around in a grass skirt throwing stone axes to wielding a sword and wearing Samurai armor. No dino buddies or anything like that either, very strange.

What, you don't like Adventure Island II or III? Really? AI 1 is also a classic, New AI is very similar to the original but much easier, I remember beating it in one go. Still pretty damn fun.

I actually have a solid respect for Takahashi Meijin himself. Not because he did 16 shots per second back in the day, but because he seems to be a genuinely good guy

> inspired kids to git gud at video games
> inspired them to gid gud at sports
> inspired himself to stop smoking after realizing he's an icon to so many kids
> still shows in media and CoroCoro mags to support new generation's interest in retro games

And his singing voice is quite good.

It's not so bad in the sequels but in the first game he really does look like he's just been bashed in the face with a shovel. I do like the design overall, sort of an everyman hero, kind of like Mario.

He looks exactly like his real-life counterpart. The sequels, however, made a generic shounen boy out of him (which isn't a bad thing either)

I've played the first game the most and enjoyed most of it, but definitely not the last two levels.
