Compared to Halo the AI seems really bad for singleplayer but how does the online multiplayer mode (LAN) compare?

Technically no, the game doesn't support online. But you can rip a ROM of it and use that to play online. That's not the actual game though it's just a digital file copy of it (think about if you took a video camera into a movie theater and filmed the projection screen, it's kind of like that).

Looks like you're objectively wrong. A computer is online to a network if it is connected to it. A LAN is a network. The Internet isn't the only network a computer can be online to.

If it supports LAN, it kind of supports "online", since you can bridge two LANs over the Internet. This works with original hardware and everything. Only requirement is that the game handles latency well. Other than that it won't even know that 192.168.1.2 is actually hundreds of miles away and not in the same room.
