The combat is so dull it makes the game a chore to play. The platforming is fun at least, even if it's easy. I wish the game was 95% platforming. Shame the sequels double down in combat.

I doubt anybody would disagree that the combat is the least enjoyable part of the game yeah; it's not "bad" as such though, and I guess it's there to inflate the overall length a little.

within like the first 30 minutes of gameplay you figure out the meta of running over peoples heads and slashing their backs to win basically every fight, and then dagger them

somehow the combat is still better than whats in the non retro derivative series

That works on the lower tier enemies. You can't do that to later tier enemies. The most impactful move you can do is the attack that you launch yourself off the wall. Instant knock down for your dagger to absorb the enemy.
Sands of Time isn't remembered for its combat, but it's presentation and the way it tackles platforming.

>not discovering the incredible combo system you can do by switching between different enemies while attacking which triggers different attacks and animations and can lead into scenarios where all the enemies are stunned or time-slowed and you just kill the shit out everything in one epic combo that you were able to figure out through trial and error by using rewind
you guys seriously aren't gonna make it

Warrior Within had kino combat and the aesthetic was cool. The only issue with the game was some weird sound bugs.

you can't run away from enemy encounters in this game. killing a certain number of enemies is required to move forward every time you encounter them.

you're full of shit.
there's only around 12 combat encounters you can't run away from.

It was meant to be simple. The main appeal of the game was supposed to be the in depth platforming. I'd imagine if it ever got a reboot it would play like an asscreed game.

PoP:SoT was always a basic run of the mill game, and it was an indictment of the quality of the releases of the time that you saw it get GotY

Christ, it's sad how much of plunge in quality most Ubisoft games took after that series started.

I wish non kiddie 3D platformers were a thing. These days the closest you can get to that is the Ass Creed series, but those games suck as far as I'm concerned.

>> No.9944791

Yeah I wish I could just turn the combat off honestly, its awful. The last 30 minutes or so where they take the dagger away from you and ramp up the difficulty really made me appreciate just how good the platforming was. I wanted more of that tension and difficulty. Great game anyway.

most games will pace themselves by adding breaks or breathers in-between the fast-paced combat: puzzles, dialogue, story, and so on
prince of persia was the first game I ever played where the combat was there to give you some breathing room from the beautifully stunning platforming sequences. the combat was pretty easy to learn, simple to master, and had a kind of rhythmic quality to it that made it relaxing
people who were mad at the vizier "boss" fight really didn't understand the game. he wasn't the boss of the game, just the boss of the story. the true boss of the game was the final platforming sequence where you'd lost the dagger of time. really this game was brilliant on many levels; it still ranks amongst my all-time favorites
it was also the first platforming game i'd ever played where your character actually had a sense of self-preservation (you couldn't just run him off the cliff accidentally really).
also the artist who designed the prince wasn't given specific instructions on how to design the prince's face so he just made the prince look like himself lol

SoT is my favorite game of all time. I've been playing it for 20 years. I was looking forward to the remake. I was interested to see what they did with it and since I've played the game so much I would have been able to notice pretty much everything that was changed down to the minute details. I was hoping it would kick start the series again with possibly new games. Now I don't think it's ever coming out despite what they say and the franchise is dead for real this time.

Not him but basically a parcour game where parcour is actually the focus, i.e. not asscreed hold forward, the "old" pop games were a good basis. Or a new mirrors edge without EA

same. that's part of the reason I stayed with the series for so long. I kept hoping there would be more but there never really was. closest I felt it got was in AV4 when there were "lines" on some of the islands that let you parkour from one end to the other without interruption.

I think the combat is fun and pleasingly cinematic, unfortunately it's just far too easy. Having to get an enemy vulnerable and then stab them with the dagger is a great concept, and Warrior Within should have gone harder on that quasi-puzzle combat design instead of just adding combos and turning enemies into damage sponges
