I really like the aesthetic, controls, and music in this game, but by God did the designers try as hard as possible to make it an obnoxious experience. Basically the entire game becomes an "avoid running into the back of other cars" simulator, and the game purposely throws nothing but narrow roads at you while the cars actively try to make you impede your progress and the whole thing just becomes a frustrating mess.

I know this game was basically trying to be a ripoff of Outrun. I love Outrun, but I'd like to play a real arcadey racing game. Are there any /vr/ games that are just like this but not so fucking annoying?

Eh, technically not retro, but I enjoyed it personally. I learned you can also play it with a Genesis or Saturn controller, but I played it on my tablet years ago.

Try Virtua Racing Deluxe or OutRunners. Some people really like Daytona USA though I prefer Championship Circuit Edition, there's also the Top Gear series and Lotus Turbo Challenge. I personally like Road Rash on SEGA CD and Road Spirits on Turbo CD, even though the latter isn't very good by most people's standards

OP check out Ridge Racer on PS1, doesn't matter which one, also OutRun 2 and OutRun 2006 are technically retro now and worth emulating imo

I dont know how they managed to not make this at least as good as outrun. its a game from the god damn 80s and they still cant get it right. the hitting cars thing also seems very rad racer to me, but something about it lacks coolness and it drags on. I was getting far and just stopped playing.

I almost loved this, but the music is so fake retro.
Like they hired someone and told them "do retro music!" and he was like uhhh

It's definitely not retro, but I know there are definitely better equivalents and they were almost certainly made in the retro era.

I always want to pick it up again, but then I actually play it and it just ends up fucking annoying me.

It's not supposed to be Outrun, it's Top Gear, which matches with the avoiding vehicles mentality. It's a good game, I wish they had pitstops like the original instead just picking items in the track, makes it feel more like a mobile game.

>it's Top Gear
Holy shit you're right. I never played this growing up but it's basically the exact same game. God damn the modern industry is depressing.

I consider it more of a spiritual successor, especially considering the guy who composed it did in fact do the music for Top Gear

I did not know that. It was originally a mobile game so I guess I assumed it was a ripoff without thinking. It seems like in Top Gear the cars are way less annoying to run into by accident. I honestly think if Horizon Chase just decreased the knockback by like 50% it would be fine.

It's a brazilian game made to homage Top Gear, a SNES game that was beloved by every single brazilian alive at the time. Seriously, it was BIG.
And yeah, you pretty much described every 8-16 bit racing game there.

The original game was massive in Latin America, specially Brazil and it has a big cult following even today. The developers of Horizon Chase are from Brazil, massive Top Gear fans, they even went out of their way to drag Barry Leich's ass out of retirement to do the soundtrack (the original Top Gear composer). Their heart was in the right place, I just wish the final product felt less like a phone game.
