What are your top 5 PS1 JRPGs? Mostly just made this for recommendations after I realized I've only ever played 5:

Lunar - Super charming. Feels like playing an anime.
Legend of Legia - Big adventure with cool combat. Traveling the world and saving villages felt cool.
FF7/FF8/FF9 - Yup played em. Liked them well enough.

Arc one is prologue (play with a guide EVERYTHING CARRIES OVER!, and there is a secret character that adds more to the story if you find them)

to the amazing arc two the game had everything anyone could want from an rpg
>great sprite art
>lush and interesting world
>sidequests glore
>battle tower 4 years before pokemon had it
>music by t-square
>interesting battle system

Arc three was kinda meh

I gotta stop you right there, legend of dragoon was a piece of shit.

>shitty artstyle that aged like milk
tried to be hyperreal for the time and it looks like shit now
>shit music tracks
>fucky battle system
>limited inventory
>boring tropes characters
>ancient still functional ruins just sitting in the distance for 10,000 years and no one thought to check them out

there is no reason to play this game.

There's so many good ones. I know Final Fantasy Tactics top the list. Valkyrie Profile, Alundra, and Suikoden 1/2 are definitely up there. I cannot decide between Final Fantasy 9, Parasite Eve, Vandal Hears 1/2, and the Ogre games to take the last spots.

Breath of Fire IV is my favorite because of Fou-Lu's character, the mystical atmosphere and story, the charming sprites, and music.
I still need to play Lunar 1&2 and a couple of others.
I also liked Suikoden I&II and Xenogears, but they don't reach my top 5.

It's weird to me to see Tales of Destiny 2 twice and no Tales of Destiny 1. The first is one of my top games, but I found the 2 awful by comparison. But to each their own. Mine would be

Tales of Destiny
Breath of Fire 4
Chrono Cross
Persona 2
Vagrant Story

Honorable mentions go to
Legend of Mana which has some really cool storytelling and certain aspects but a buggy and crappy combat system
SaGa Frontier 2 which is wonderful but semi-impregnable so I don't generally recommend it.

Word of advice, if what you have is a Playstation and you're just going through what's available then the Lunars are passable. Silver Star is still pretty good, but the remake of Lunar 2 is a terrible lazy mess compared to the original. So if you're emulating I'd highly recommend going with them instead.

BTW, has anyone here played Popolocrois Monogatari I yet? It recently had a rom hacked translation. Sadly, I don't think the romhacked translation of Popolocrois Monogatari II is good for what I've seen though (I think it's incomplete).
The PSP remake felt bastardized, so I would really like to play the originals on PS1.

>Lunar 2 is a terrible lazy mess
I know that Grandia is a terrible port on PS1 and got the romhacked translation for Saturn, but I wasn't aware that Lunar 2 was a bad port too. Can you briefly tell me what's wrong with Lunar 2?

I think something happened at GameArts around that time because their quality in general suddenly went down. There are a bunch of weird tiny things in the Lunar 2 remake like doors in the original having opening and closing animations that are gone. Or a town near the end which in the original has a cool desert aesthetic with big plant pods used as windmills that you don't see anywhere else. In the remake it's just standard town tiles from other places.

A perfect example is this scene compared to the one I posted there. There's a section called the Illusion Woods which in the original lives up to it's name. Giant trees with illusory doors that lead to underground passages through the forest.

In the remake a guy moves some bushes out of the way so you can go through a short, generic forest dungeon that looks more like a hedge maze than a forest. The whole thing is like that.

Ohh yeah and the cut scenes are re-done but WD didn't re-record audio tracks so some places it just plain doesn't line up.

I hate it, but many others seem to enjoy. The good is it has a fun battle system. The bad is that it's supposed to be all about tue thrill of exploring, but dungeons are mostly boring both design and layout wise and are super short. Story feels like it was cobbled together from discarded scraps when making Lunar and is super generic. Also I found most of the characters, especially that purple haired girl just annoying. But try it out, some loved it.

Destiny II was the first Tales game I played, so when I finally went back to Destiny it felt like a big gap.
I didn't find much to dislike about Destiny II, I love how it looks, the battle and craymel system is fun, the story had a good hook with trying to find out the origins of Meredy.
One thing Destiny does better is having a larger cast of party members, I like JRPGs with more party member choices, but Farah and Reid having different play styles gives a good amount of variety and obviously having two mages complements the craymel system.

It’s definitely not that bad. A bit mediocre in many regards, but I think the game’s story and aesthetic are pretty good all things considered. The dragoon magic animations are still gorgeous (at least they are the first time) and pulling off additions was really satisfying. Only thing that I thought was kind of weak was the music, but even then it’s still pretty memorable.

when i got into the tales of series i made my mind to play them in order of release
so i started with Phantasia on the SNES and absolutely loved it, i was so hype to try Destiny on the ps1, i really wanted to see how they improved everything for the new generation.
I was honestly very dissapointed that not only it plays almost identical to Phantasia but that in many regards it takes a step back, you can stun lock every boss by doing an art +a chained art, i remember the Final Boss couldn't even touch me
Enemy formation didn't matter anymore since you can freely walk throught the enemy and attack the one behind him, i remember in Phantasia the enemy formation of Golem + one healer + two mages really wrecked my shit, but in Destiny you can just ignore the Golem and directly attack the mages behind him which in my opinion makes battle formation kinda useless
another weird thing about Destiny is the sound direction, i remember in Phantasia when something sad or shocking happened the music would either stop or the "sad music" would begin to play
but on Destiny i clearly remember this scene of some NPC telling you another NPC had died, and everyone was sad and seriously discussing the situation while on the background the happy music of the town was still playing lmao
and that final boss that was a Dhaos bootleg and came out of nowhere
anyway it's cool that you like the game anon, i'm not trying to make you change your mind about the game or anything, just ranting a bit
Destiny II imo is the better game on a technical standpoint tho
