I had removed the third playable character: Kustam, a hand cannon packing Warforged, in the last update . He suffered from too many gameplay and balance issues, I didn't have the time to fix him to my standards at the time. The fourth playable character: Samson, a little Kobold Artificer, will be added in the mod's final major update. Kustam'll be back too.

Also with any luck Blaz will become more straightforward to play as when I get rid of the manual toggle for the powered sword and just make it more like a combo meter.
Though checking the help screen might help you figure out Blaz a little in the mean time.

>UAC Labs
This map honestly isn't terrible, too bad its creator murdered people and then offed themselves or he would have maybe contributed to a really cool megawad by now.
>Nuts
It's still a fun map to blast through and stress-test sourceport performance as well as overpowered weapon packs like Russian Overkill, though 100k Revenants has taken its place as the "impossible to run" map and it's not particularly enjoyable as a slaughter map with vanilla gameplay.
>TNT Evilution
I can see why people were pissed about it getting paywalled with Final Doom at the time but they honestly weren't missing that much. Memento Mori and even TNT's own Icarus: Alien Vanguard are much better megawads which came out for free the same year.

May not be a very good map pack for all I know but it's not "remarkably bad" like it would have been back then since we're used to map packs with tons of sectors now and they don't tank performance typically.

pistol start Plutonia has literally been the hardest thing ive ever tried in videogames ever

Is map 12 even possible? Theres not enough ammo to take out that Cyberdemon on top of the red key, and theres a billion enemies literally everywhere with no cover or health.

Literally what were they thinking? I doubt they even playtested UV and beat it themselves in one go.

>> No.9926216

I just recently beat it on UV from pistol start. Map 12 is tough, but it's totally doable. It's easy to position yourself in a way where the Cyberdemon is impotent and you can just shotgun him to death.

Well Blaz is gonna get streamlined further soon where it'll just be:
hit badmans -> build meter -> fill meter -> hit badmans harder and get HP -> keep meter going

Kustam would have been a fucking nightmare for you too, he was so fucking convoluted between his meters, managing reloads and the fact he had double tapping, holding, AND holding primary and then hitting altfire for his weapons. He's still most likely going to be the most complex character in GMOTA, but I'm hoping to make his gameplay less asinine and braindead when I bring him back.

Some of the mappers disclose their nationality, the most fortunate of them have developed their own distinguished and recognizable style - either by imitating various inspirers and refining their work, or by hitting some overlooked niche.

Is there a such mapper whose style you easily associate with a particular country? Or is there a special set of quirks you noticed that's shared by natives of some country? Onemandoom, for one, often mentions the so-called "Russian realism" in his wad reviews.

I felt like some of his inputs and mechanics were pretty weird, like the buff potions and the marking shot thing. Also seeing as potions are gone I can focus more on his core mechanics. Though one thing I've been thinking a lot on is how I want to handle kicks and charge kicks and if whether or not I want them to tie into his heat gauge at all. I've also been considering removing the full charge staff strike, and instead just making it so the longer you charge the staff, the longer you spin it when you let go. He'll need some different upgrades as well, one I've been considering is letting him kick his spent casings away as a projectile attack. This will be something I'll dive deeper into in the coming months after I finish up Blaz and Doomslayer.

In hindsight giving him buffs was a dumb idea, that's more of Samson's thing. Like I explained it canonically they were something of his creation, but mechanically it doesn't suit the slower robot man that's more about ranged attacks and meticulously wiping enemies out.

maps that got mainstream news coverage have never really caused long term problems. because you can't play one map forever. low effort copies and bandwagons from novice mappers won't get any traction. so, the fad has an expiration date. the good newfags stay and the bad newfags leave once discussion dries up. and in myhouse's case, it's a horror game, most of the people who see it aren't even going to play it, they'll just watch the streamer, won't install the game, and will stay comfortably at arm's length from the doom community. that isn't really a problem.
the only time a mod going mainstream has caused long term problems was brutal doom, and that's because it's not a map, it's a gameplay mod, so you can play it with whatever wads you want and then bitch at the creator in portuguese when your game crashes because there are more than 300 monsters in the level. there's no expiration date and an unlimited potential for being annoying.

People liked it not because it has Doom elements. Not key hunting, not combat and definitely not final fight.
They liked le spooky house, zoom liminal spaces, ARR or whatever this bullshit called, "wow I can't believe "X thing I know about" can do Y", and most importantly about all their favorite ebin streamers streaming the shit out of the wad.
The amount of fucks people give about _actual_ Doom (actual fucking levels with actual fucking combat and fucking keys and exploration and resource management and all the shit Doom did 30 damn year ago and stil does) is insignificant, we had tons of god-tier wads (and MyHouse is definitely not one of them) and none of them got even remotely popular outside of Doom circle. Unlike MyHouse which might as well be Quake mod or Half-Life mod to all the normalfag creaming their pants about it right now.

Sure, but attention doesn't have to mean that much. Thatcher's Techbase got a lot of coverage in spite of mostly being kind of a wet fart, but it's also just about forgotten, the only people who give it any thought now are those who are preoccupied with old British politics, and us here seething at something lame like that getting a big spotlight.

myhouse.wad is definitely a LOT more ambitious and better put together than Thatcher's Techbase, but setting aside that I think it much more deserves attention, I still don't think it's going to have a long lasting effect, or at least not one that starts taking up a lot of space in the overall fandom. What we might see is a slow growth of another subgenre, but it's unlikely to dominate.

My reading is fine, you barely wrote any explaination in your original comment. You are guessing what people feel when playing or watching the wad. Some might get into those other doom wads you are mentioning because of it. A big draw to it is the doom art style and that is why it wasn't made in another game. Also because of the biggest reference regarding everyone recreating their house in doom. Are you mad because of the popularity? Positive, but I see it in a weird way. Some portion of people will become more interested in classic-doom because of it. Out of that portion, most of them will be primarily interested in gz-doom modding and some amount will stumble on vanilla-ish doom.

Also Brutal Doom, there's a lot to criticize, I think some of it is badly designed, but shitloads of work has been put into making it.

Of course, that's not to say that effort just smooths over bad design, there's big projects, basically all new games in GzDoom, which has a lot of time and effort put into the world and setting, and the graphics, but the author canot design levels/gameplay for shit, so actually playing that stuff is absolutely dildos.

It sounds lame as fuck, but I'm tempted to buff my guy's damage resistance (via the multiplier in settings) so he doesn't die so quickly. What I enjoy about HD is the extreme gear and medical autism, not so much dying because I stepped around a corner and got hit by a fireball and two grunts. Half the time if I get set on fire I'll normally quit because it's just going to kill me.
I want something that's closer to AHL than Arma - medical stuff is more complicated than just running over a medpack, and guns are actual machines - but I can take more than one or two bullets before needing to scurry into an alcove and spend minutes recuperating.

Neutral to positive, unlike Brutal Doom it's a self contained map(set? partial conversion?).
With BD it was different as it could be played with any mapset and there were countless retards demanding that other gameplay mods and TCs be made compatible with it. Myhouse seems like a self-contained thing and it's growing a self-contained fanbase. This. Players are autistic and most go in with the mindset that all demons must die. Which is fine because that's the entire point of Doom, but when you change up the formula then a lot of players start thinking about how to cheese these fights you designed the player to run away from.
You can't stop some people from trying to punch every monster to death without a berserk pack but you can "train" most players early on that they shouldn't kill everything at first. Do stuff like placing weapons and ammo in view but not readily accessible so the player has to run and find supplies first.

I'd say that's a false equivalence. You're still operating the same machine, it's just that you're expected to use it in an unfamiliar way.
A better analogy might be if a road painted red was off-limits to cars, but was otherwise exactly like the surrounding and connecting roads. (I've actually run into something similar IRL.)
While it would technically be the responsibility of the drivers to know this rule and obey it, out-of-towners might need more explicit signposting or even barricading to prevent them from accidentally a Christmas market or something. A similar example might be if a parking lot has a steep drop-off somewhere. Technically you don't NEED to make it clearly visible with hi-vis paint or a sign telling people not to drive straight off the ledge. But these are still good preventative measures for if you want to save yourself trouble in the future. They just take extra time and awareness to utilize, and such signposting often has to be waaaay more explicit than some designers are comfortable with.

The only problems we encountered at all was a one-time teleport for the blue armor secret on Map11, and a lift that got stuck on the final map, but both of these only came up as issues because of HD's wandering enemies. I would say the one-time teleport is a bit of a bad design choice in general, because you have no reason to expect it to not be repeatable, so you might walk away without the blue armor thinking you'll come back for it before finishing the map.

Just these obstacles between you and a CD are there (similar column is in twenty-something map with hanging cages) to allow you to survive and give a hiding place - NOT intended to be used as a cheese spot, such things expose the seams in 2.5d engine limitations and enemies ai (similar crap is frequently done in Might and Magic 6) and are better to avoid.

I disagree. I fully believe he play-tested the level and fully understood you could stand there and shoot the cyberdemon while its rockets hit the torch.
The design of Plutonia's fights in general makes it obvious the fights were thoroughly playtested as they're carefully crafted to be difficult without relying on slaughter-tier numbers of enemies.
He knew the rockets would hit that torch and he left the torch there. He intended you to be able to stand there and shoot the Cyberdemon safely.

So I tried Chainworm in Hideous Destructor. Got as far as some of the way through the second level before I gave up, but from what I saw it's a very cool set of maps.
Very nice layouts, lots of little detail, the kind of scale that works well with HD. It wasn't even too hard. UNTIL I hit the part of level 2 where you find the yellow skull inside the icon of sin, have to travel out, and get to the corridor with the hellknight at the other end.
>frag keeps reviving the same half dozen mini demons and infantryman
>end up having to retreat into a jefferies tube and take pot shots at them and the hellknight that's come up to fight as they keep reviving
>finally down the hellknight - a few seconds later it revives
>fuck this, run past, get fucking burned, limp around the corner
>into a room full of shotgunners and imps
>die
Fuck that shit, even on half damage multiplier it's impossible. I might have actually burnt myself out on Hideous Destructor now, shame since I never finished making the map I was working on.

That's an archvile curse, not frag. A random amount of time after killing an archvile, the curse triggers and revives enemies in a radius around you until 100 revive attempts have been made. Counterplays include:
Hauling ass to leave the level before it activates. It won't follow you past the intermission.
Hunkering down near a manageable number of corpses and playing whack-a-mole. Best with zombies since they'll reimburse you on ammo. The more corpses you stay near, the faster the curse will be spent.
Maiming corpses you don't want to see revived. Chainsaw, frag grenades, thunderbuster spray, even just firing more 4.26 or shells into a corpse will do. A gibbed corpse will need several revive attempts before it's able to get back up. Bigger enemies that don't gib can simply be damaged indefinitely. If you set them on fire with thunderbuster spray, they won't even be able to try to get up. This is a good idea even if you aren't anticipating an archvile curse, since it'll also prevent regular frag revivals from happening to problem enemies. A frag grenade on a ninja pirate or hell knight corpse is one of the best possible uses for it.

I like gore and a bit of the modern aesthetic but I agree in general with anons that fucking hate Brutal DOOM

My main issue with it, is that it fucks with the pacing of actual doom combat encounters because it fucks with the enemies firerate, ballistics, and attack speed, not to mention that its barrels explode like 10 trillion fucking times bigger than they should, eternally fucking with a lot of different level design.

New to UDB. Does anybody how to replace all missing textures with a generic texture all at once so I can test my map without having to go through and manually make sure everything is textured? Its mega annoying, ill go around and texture everything later but im sick of missing textures every time im done lifting a ceiling or whatever.

Use find and replace mode, search for "-" to find all missing textures.

That's not really doomcute, that's just a sprite.

Post your code, I'm sure someone here can help you fix the issue. It's probably a really simple oversight.

"Recreated in the Doom engine" doesn't mean "using imported sprites", it means using sectors to make the thing. And even then, "doomcute" versus "sector art" would be different things, too.

fucking both, not even kidding.

If I wanted doomcute I would play Duke Nukem

Sure, the sprite is just a sprite, but it's part of that unnecessary detail that creates the little scene, which is what I always took the term to mean even if it usually focuses on sector work. Either way, I dig that kinda thing.

i dont get it, does W1 not mean walk once?

Habitat's not that bad. Central Processing is worse.

The challenge is in running the fucking thing above 5fps.

See, there is your problem. You have to add frames.

I don't understand, it IS supposed to be activated by walkover, or do you mean REPEATEDLY activated?

NTA but judging by
>It's still activating when I walk across the linedef instead of just doing it once
>does W1 not mean walk once?
I'd assume it's the latter

It should only do it once. But it's once per line. Do you have multiple lines by any chance.
