Yeah, I agree. I think the fetus imagery is intentional, but the idea that the whole journey's purpose is to "abort a fetus" is just ridiculous. I do like the idea that Giygas isn't actually evil at the point where you face him, but to me it's more like Giygas has no way to control his own power and thus must be destroyed. Calling that "aborting a fetus" totally cheapens the climax of the story, and newcomers to the series might accept the theory, as it keeps getting posted everywhere, and commit to a vulgar interpretation of the game.

In this form you are fighting all of humanities deep hidden potential for evil that Giygas attempted to bring to the surface to manipulate, backfired and overwhelmed him, and now that evil is channeled through whatever is left of him to give it an actual form in a physical/metaphysical space. I'll agree to the balance issues which aren't limited to the end-game. The fact that you're better off avoiding most battles in general says a lot about an RPG where you'd be expected to fight LOTS of battles. Earthbound is pretty much balanced around wiping out the enemy in 1 round or fleeing, and anything that comes after that is a shitshow based on how much the game hates you that day. God help you if the dreaded red swirl and "HERE IS THE (ENEMY)'S OPENING ATTACK" appears on your screen at almost any point in the game.

I always thought a Mother 4 finale could work off of this concept. The Starmen/Apple of Enlightenment (whom I always assumed was some vast super computer that governed their race) completely piss themselves after seeing what the potential for evil intents humanity possessed did to Giygas when he attempted to tap into it. The universe will be absolutely fucked if humans ever leave the Earth and they just need to be wiped out completely. Have a group needing to travel into space to all kinds of weird planets like a Mr. Saturn homeworld, hopping about to get to the Starmen homeworld and the final "fight" is more the group trying to reason with the Apple of Enlightenment that while humanity does have the potential for incredible evil, they can also show it that theirs is a species also capable of great good. Could be a great roundabout conclusion, going back to events such as Ninten's grandfather breaking the original trust Giegue/Giygas had for his adopted parents when he stole the secrets of PSI from his species, the Starmen seeing that as a threat. Both the humans and the aliens having reasons for the actions they took and painting neither definitively as "the good guys" and showing how emotions can drive regretful decisions, but also make an individual whom they are. Also works as a theme with characters like Pokey since he does so much horrible shit, purely driven by his childish emotions, but he doesnt consider himself to be evil.

I think lore theorycrafting like this is cool but it's a little arrogant for people to say things like "blatant" or "confirmed" when Itoi himself has explained the origin point of the Giygas fight and it has absolutely nothing to do with abortion or fetuses or babies or whatever. Earthbound is a game about childhood. Sometimes in childhood you encounter horrible traumatic things that are totally beyond your comprehension (hence the nature of Giygas's attacks), and that's the genesis of that entire boss fight. They didn't carefully tweak the constantly spazzing and intentionally disorienting backgrounds to kind of resemble half a baby for a few frames to establish some dark plot point about abortion. It didn't happen. This isn't the Da Vinci code.

If you want some counterarguments, break down what people who argue in favor of the theory are actually proposing. Are we supposed to believe Ness and his robot buddies are literally physically inside some alien mother's womb to smack a giant baby until it dies? How big is this woman supposed to be, exactly? How did Pokey Minch and his giant spider mech fit inside of her vagina? Why would prayer and positive energy destroy a fetus that, as of yet, has no malicious intent?
