Aside from fighting games, what are some games that made good use of 6 button pad?

Off the top of my head, Radiant Silvergun used them effectively.

Tomb raider plays miles better with it and virtua on makes fun with it unplayable on all other consoles pads

checked and killer instinct and mortal kombat 3were the only good uses of a 3x2 6 button layout

Very interesting. I haven't played Tomb Raider on Saturn in ages. Since I was a kid and still had my Saturn basically. I haven't played any Tomb Raider period in ages either. Tomb Raider was originally supposed to be Saturn exclusive right?

originally it was pitched as a title for the new playstation, but was developed for Saturn, PS, and PC all at the same time. IIRC it wound up being a timed exclusive for Saturn in Europe halfway through development.

Funny enough, they fixed several bugs before the Playstation/PC version wound up releasing, so timed exclusivity made those versions better.

They were making 2 for Saturn but hardware limitations made them scrap it, then Sony bought exclusivity rights for consoles.

Ranger X, Comix Zone, and Shinobi 3 has a fun 6 button layout option.

All of Sega's 3D fighters use 3 or 4 buttons.

Radiant Memegun

Hyper Duel also uses the triggers in a clever way but I don't think it uses all six like Silvergun

The only significant addition to the PS1 version was the handstand animation, which if I remember correctly one of them team members made while goofing around one day, and they all thought it was cool and put it in the game (and it was kept for every game using the original engine). The European Saturn version is buggy as fuck though, it was basically unfinished and rushed out the door. You definitely have to play the NA or JAP version.

They made the decision to reduce the draw distance to increase the framerate on the PS1 version, it's extremely noticeable in a lot of areas but its not something you'd really recognize if you haven't played both versions. Places like the main hub in the Cistern (especially when you raise the water level) and most of The Lost Valley are a fucking slideshow on both consoles, but it's a little better on the PS1. I honestly don't think either console could truly do the game justice. The sequels on the PS1 used a lot of smaller areas as well as various fogging/vis blocking in the larger ones to get around this problem for the most part though.

The black sky in The Lost Valley and the Colosseum is an error, they were supposed to have blue skies but the engine couldn't handle different colors for the sky and the distance fog, so they were both made black. I think its cool though, it makes TLV feel like something out of Journey to the Center of the Earth, and the Colosseum feels like it's hidden inside of a massive underground cavern.

desperate bait

This. The 6 button layout is so much better for fighting games. Playing any of Capcom's 2D fighters on the PS1 is misery on its own, let alone when you have to deal with the goofy control schemes that have to use shoulder buttons due to there only being 4 face buttons.

I prefer the analog sticks on the Dual Shock over the analog ball on the 3D Pad, but when it comes to the d-pad or button layout the Saturn controller is objectively better.

I vaguely remember 1 was a Saturn exclusive in the states for a very short time. Maybe it was a year and like you said the PS1 version benefited from the delay. I do remember it was one of the few Saturn games I had and one of few games on the console worth going back to that I had.

Thunder Force V and Sokyugurentai both allow you to customize controls in a way that you can assign any command to any button, even assign one command to multiple buttons or having multiple commands work from one button.

This is interesting because Soukyugurentai gets a few extra controls once you beat it a few times, you can manipulate zoom levels and have different buttons for autofire and laser lock on, even do both at the same time.

On Thunder Force V, it allows you to do radiant silvergun-like controls, where each button fires one of your 5 different weapons, plus one more to overcharge it. By default you only have one fire, one overcharge, and two buttons to cycle your weapons back/forward, plus a button to adjust your speed.

Comix Zone lets you use XYZ to use each of your 3 items, and use the extra AB or C button that frees up to do one of the direction attacks with just one button press, or you can turn off auto-blocking and use the extra button to block manually. I tend to set it to Shoulder Smash since it's handy for breaking obstacles without losing too much health

Yeah. OP said don't talk about fightans but Zero 2 on saturn pad is so much better than xbox or playstation that it really needs to be said. Like it totally raises the ceiling on how deeply you can get into the game - sans arcade sticks

It was such a pleasure having a different shot bound to each different button, having to cycle through weapons is such a pain in the ass that I have a hard time understanding why most games don't do this

It is a lot of fun to play around with but makes the game very easy and it wasn't all that difficult to start with. So I would recommend beating it the 3 button way first.

iirc the six button controller wasn't released yet at the time shinobi 3 was released

>> No.9926289

beat em up games are better with 6 button controllers since it emulates the arcade feeling better than say the SNES controller. It's the definitive way to play them, I can't see myself playing Cowabung Collection for example with a different controller.
