I played it for the first time about a year ago for maybe four hours. Fucked about, did some of the "quests" in the game. The entire time the only thought that stuck with me was "Damn I should have played this on release because this shit isn't very good but I can see why people talked it up so fiercely over the years".

I did. It's just an arcade-y isometric shooter with emphasis on killing everyone and MC going mental. No dark humor (or any humor at all). Even slightly disturbing at times. Although setting a marching orchestra on fire was pretty fun.

Part of the appeal of Postal 2 is doing challenge runs on different difficulties and routing appropriately. Doing a Jesus run (no kills) plays a lot differently from a min-maxing run (grab all the best guns you can find and the police uniform every day) which is different than Heston difficulty (everyone is armed) which is different from Postal difficulty (everyone will try to kill you on sight). It also helps to play it after some really frustrating real life stuff like a jog you hate or getting a speeding ticket or whatever dumb thing has you mad. Apocalypse Weekend is a little linear for my tastes but it's all right. The Paradise Lost expansion was really fun but a little broken at launch. Probably worth a few runs as well. It has non lethal weapons outside of piss which can change things quite a bit.
Honestly, one of the most amusing parts of the game is how horribly unoptimized it is. I swear it takes a modern PC to run the game above 640x480 without some sort of stutter, and that's even without all the most recent updates. I'd love to look at the source code and see how many actual optimizations can be made.

Only thing I know about postal is, imo it’s pretty dark and fucked up in the vein of TW black except more realistic. And the only thing I know about postal 2 is people were losing their minds over it, I boot it up and it’s just walking around a boring map w some crude ren and stimpy humor. Fast forward a few years and CoD has u mowing down an entire airport full of people (million seller and obviously the company is pulling in the billions so no it didn’t effect them negatively in the least). No, the people who were outraged were upset at what they considered to be satanic imagery and the promotion of consorting with magical animals (demons). I was raised in a Baptist church and I never heard a single word about Pokemon "promoting evolution" but I heard a TON about Pokemon promoting satanism and witchcraft. Thankfully my parents didn't buy into it and considered the game harmless so I played it but I knew a lot of kids who weren't allowed and not a single one of them cited evolution as the reason.

The boomerang machete is one of the coolest weapons I've seen in an FPS. I love that even the Dude thinks it's cool, with how he sometimes goes "Oh man, that's fuckin awesome!" When you throw it.

Had heard that there was going to be a gay pride parade to Postal 4, but he veto'd it. If they ever find their balls again and add it I'll buy a bunch of copies in support. Last I checked their peak was 250 players on Steam and they deserve it for the reddit tier humour.

Ragdoll physics were relatively new back then. And you could use drugs or cheats to slow the game down, you could do this and launch peoples bodies high up into the air like a rocket with automatic fire. Decapitated bodies would piss out blood. If they were vomiting at the time their necks would piss out vomit instead. You can pour trails of gasoline to create a chain reaction. There wasn't really anything else quite like it at the time. I played it like a sandbox and mucked around with all this kind of stuff most of the time. It was entertaining, kind of like how happy wheels is in a way.

Currently you can't buy Postal 2 on the steam store right now for some reason, the "Buy" button is missing for the base game but you can add the dlc to your cart, lol.
