Levels are largely the same, but there's no run button so you're a lot more limited in your movement. Honestly, don't play DDP unless you're a massive Mario 2 fan and want a change of pace. Mario 2/DDP is way less interesting when you can't build the necessary moment to clear large portions of the levels.

This reminded me how much trouble I had with this game. I read and write backwards or upside down about as fast as I read normally, and there was something about the way the buoys could look at times that would make the challenge more about trying to process which side of the next buoy I was actually supposed to be on more than anything else. If they had removed the letters from the buoys, removed the arrows from the buoys and instead marked the next buoy with a flag, and finally changed the yellow buoys to a green it would have been a HUGE improvement.

You can see just how good the animations and physics are in Wave Race by comparing them to that video.
