It has all the common sewer level tropes and can be annoying to play, but I won't say it wasn't memorable given its creepy imagery and blood on the wall, and the boss fight.

Cant you theoretically go wild with any layout though? Maybe sewers can be creepier/more atmospheric, but I dont buy the "crazy layout" argument. In fact, I've never enjoyed a complex sewer level because everything looks ugly and samey. Perfect example is Thief Gold's Thieves Guild mission.

In general they're ugly and samey looking. Tight corridors, low light, mostly drab concrete, just a pain to navigate.

Gameplay doest exist in a vacuum. You need nice looking, well-designed levels to play the game in, or else the gameplay will suffer.

to the average player a sewer is just an indistinguishable maze of concrete and industrial decoration, they can essentially do anything with the layouts short of water floating upwards. A game that takes place in say a suburban house for example will be far more constrained by real world logic.

Aquatos Sewers was okay, suffered from only having like one enemy type in the entire thing but it was a great place to use the quack-o-ray since it killed amoeboids instantly and had infinite ammo. Although the game can freeze if there's too many ducks in the level at once (which is really easy to do in there)

It did have that really cool moment of when you go back there with the Magnet Boots, realize you can walk on all the pipe walls, and the sewers are literally twice as big as they were when you were stuck on the ground level.
