2D Mario is about obstacle course platforming gameplay, not about exploring half empty maps with relatively little platforming. It's strange people pretend this was a satisfactory and faithful adaption of Mario into 3D.

You don't understand. Mario 64 is
> oh my gosh I can control him in full 3D I can go to eight glorious sides and explore the trees oh my god everything is so real L is real too I can almost taste him!!! Best gamerino of 1996

Basically you won't get those feelings if you're (obviously) weren't there back then.

It's literally the first of its kind. They had to solve so many issues just to get Mario 64 playing as well as it did. And weirdly the deeper into the game you get, the more realized and intricate the level design becomes. I much prefer the 2d Mario games but put some respect on the 3d OG.

Meh I don't think it plays or feels like this description even if its seemingly accurate

Getting better at 64 also feels much more rewarding and addicting. That's what people who don't get 64 popularity can't comprehend, it's insane how much depth there is just getting better at controlling Mario.

It gets points for being the first of a kind, and still getting concepts right that other games after it wouldn't get as well.
But it is over hyped, like any other 64 game, since everyone had the same 10 games it generated an echo chamber unlike anything you'd see in other consoles.

>> No.9898941

The fact that they were openworld levels that can be explored in any which way instantly makes it superior to the linear Galaxy games

>you get a power up and you fly through the level
meh, i prefer mario 64 to tell the truth. The linear 2d Mario games get boring as you go along, but in Mario 64 it's entertaining to slide down a slide or race a koopa.

It's the beginning of the collectathon genre, it's weird that people think it started with Rare when they just followed this game's lead.

For the assmad people who quibble about the term, I am not using the term as an insult

I don't know, looks like Mario 64 took what they were developing in World (secret exits, enormous levels with secrets to uncover, ability to play levels in any order) and Yoshi Island (red coins, even bigger levels, no power-ups, etc.) and put that into 3D.

>> No.9899209

>half empty
they're not, and that's sm64 strong point. exploration is rewarded and there's never slow boring moments, and if you dont like a world you can focus getting stars in another one.

I played it when it came out. Was a huge Marion fanboy starting with SMB3. I still think it might be the best game ever made. With that being said back then I thought the same about it not being a real Mario in 3D. But I didn't really care nor do I now because it was so good and unique regardless. It had enough old Mario to it, but so much new stuff that felt Mario.

I love Mario 64, but I never understood the idea that it was a perfect representation of 2d Mario in 3D. Just more mindless dick sucking, as is common for a lot of the classic games of the era.
Funny enough, I think Crash Bandicoot is a better representation of 2d Mario. The rendering tricks they'd use to fit these continuously flowing levels in were much more reminiscent of previous gen platforming games. Mario 64 instead opted for collwcting ine power star at a time as a workaround for map size limitations. Still fun, but the experience is completly different from classic Mario.

It was a time no one knew what was going on. 3D was such a drastic change in vision and gameplay.
Remember that open world is still a meme and if your game is linear, retards think it's bad. It took forever for Mario to return to its roots with Galaxy 2, but at the same, we didnt realize mario 64 was not a true "3D SMB" and it was just how the game worked in 3D. also it's still an amazing game which probably matters the most

3D Land was the first one to attempt the 2D style in 3D. We didn't even get the Fire Flower in 3D until Galaxy.

This is honestly the best way to explain it. 3D was a new thing at the time, the fact that you could run around the castle and collect coins and stars in 3D in general is what made it so mesmerizing as a kid.

A "faithful adaption of Mario into 3D" is 3D Land and 3D World and those games are fucking boring. Back then Nintendo understood that simply adding another axis wasn't necessarily the way to make the game fun.

3D World is a great fucking game though, it's fun to play but it feels pretty generic compared to other 3D Mario games. Literally the only non-generic thing about it is the fact that you can play as Rosalina. 3D Land and 3D World are basically NSMB 3D but that's not a bad thing. Gameplay-wise NSMB Wii and U are unironically solid 2D platformers

3D Land and World are the only faithful 3D adaptations of classic Mario. 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, and Odyssey are more but from a gameplay perspective they're pretty much an entirely different series. The thing is the N64 literally couldn't handle making a proper 3D Mario since if they made roughly 64 unique obstacle courses like the 2D games it wouldn't fit on the cartridge so they had to pad out the game by reusing areas, accidentally inventing the collectathon.

Here's a vintage review back from the 90s that actually covers every aspect, from the "oooh 3D!" to the "this isn't really like Mario is it?" aspects:
http://www.world-of-nintendo.com/reviews/nintendo_64/super_mario_64_hooft.shtml

Choice quotes:
>we watched the princess asking Mario to come by and have a piece of cake. "Easy" my sister said, we can do that! I was in no hurry, so for almost an hour we've been running through the garden. We did some crazy jumps, and really: the controller immediately felt like it'd been in our hands for a long long time.

>Just before we had dinner, I could get the very first star. I noticed that it was mainly the problem of having no idea how to explore a 3-D world, what kept us so long from getting a star. Then I immediately found out what would be my biggest concern against this game: it is too much exploring. When I go playing a Mario game I want to have action; jumping, beating enemies by jumping on them, but just not that much exploring. When I want to explore I'll stick to playing The Legend of Zelda! Sure, this is fun -and I mean A LOT of fun-, but it just isn't what I want from a Super Mario game.

>Super Mario 64 sets a mountain high standard for future games, and is a lot of fun most of the time. However, it isn't hard to imagine that people will completely dislike the game, for some reasons. The courses which come to running around all the time and not knowing what to do, the stars after the first star which are too easy. To me, this game seems just too non-linear. I'll keep playing this game until the 120 stars mark, but I wonder if the 'normal gamers' will be attracted that much to it either. Further this game simply is not what I wanted in a Mario game.

The N64 sold less than the SNES after all. I guess a lot of Mario fans went to Playstation and just enjoyed Crash when Nintendo abandoned them.
