The Saturn went out in a ball of fire sparked by titanic power struggles and chadlike disregard for developers in favor of raw power and aesthetics. Even the Dreamcast stands in the shadows of its chiseled ruins.

I find it pretty casual and relaxing. There are a few levels where you're racing against the clock, but they're easy once you've played through a few times and know what to expect. I've made a lot of cheats for these guys, but strictly limited to removing continues/lives limits. That's not an issue in Mr Bones, so cheats aren't required. I do like how they punish you by making levels re-load when you die. CD load times are punishment enough for failure in a video game.

Whatever you do, don't play Sonic Jam. They fucked the sound quality on that version (not to mention some sound effects just being wrong), and for some reason, despite being on more powerful hardware, Jam's versions suffer from more slowdowns and higher input latency and weird micro-stutters. I believe it introduces new bugs as well, something related to Knuckles in 3&K. Shit port job from Sonic Team, must've been new hires that worked on it whilst the main team were busy developing Burning Rangers.

>Sega seems to have faded away not sure what happened there
I mean, the director of Sega USA at the time kind of put it bluntly, didn't he?
>Moore recounted to Glixel his futile efforts to demonstrate to Sega of Japan that the company’s relevance was declining. Sega’s American division filmed a focus group in late 2001 or early 2002 to get opinions from “a bunch of 18-, 19-year-olds” on how they saw gaming companies. The teens characterized Sega as “your grandad,” said Moore. “Used to be cool, but even he can’t remember why anymore.”
>Yuji Naka, Naka-san, maker of Sonic, is in the room. Now, he and I have a love/hate relationship on a good day. And we show him this, and it’s subtitled in Japanese, and when it comes to that piece he just [slams his hand on the table], ‘This is ridiculous. You have made them say this. Sega is the great brand, nobody would ever say this, you have falsified!’ He just gets in my face. So I said to the translator, ‘Tell him to fuck off.’ And the poor guy looks at me and says, ‘There's no expression in Japanese.’ I said, ‘I know there is.’ And that was it. That was the last time I ever set foot in there.

And this is the guy who said this in a 2000 IGN interview

>IGNDC: We'll get to one of those in a bit. But in general, that's the question on everybody's mind -- looking at how Sega is getting into licensing content, there's always the big looming question of Sega's future, whether there will be a Dreamcast 2 or whether Sega will go software-only, whether SOJ will start developing for other platforms... With the history of the Saturn and an opportunity to bury that history, we wanted to give you a chance to say that Sega is definitely dedicated to the Dreamcast.

>Peter Moore: We are fully committed to the Dreamcast. I said earlier about, before I got into the industry, how surprised I was that the Saturn wasn't in the game for five years -- and it actually was, but... Well, you were there.
