I don't get it. Where's the fun? The story is generic so far. The characters are bland. The turn based combat is piss easy and extremely repetitive. The dialogue is cheesy. It takes the game forever to get along with the plot and scenarios. The music and sprites and cool and that's it. I just dont get jrpgs, they are such hollow experiences, even if the gameplay is barebones there is literally nothing else to get you immersed while playing.

For some reason everyone seems to conflate the constant set pieces in this game with being some sort of story. That actual story is garbage but man every 20 minutes has some new crazy action sequence like the raft ride or the SRPG bits or the ugly 3d minecart ride that runs at 5 fps.

I'll play 6 one day. It, above any FF, deserves a remake, in the style of Bravely Default.
The fans are about as obnoxious as Chrono Trigger's in terms of how much they laud over it being a "le classic", though that could be me projecting having grown up with 7 - 9 as my first FFs. Having only watched it, 6 has some good narrative trappings for JRPG we don't see too much of these days:
>Attempting to sway political opinion within the Empire
>Celes' attempted suicide
>Kefka's cold, erratic, tyrannical behavior

I love FFVI personally. RPGs seem to have more varying opinions than other genres, maybe because more subjective things like story or music matter more for people's opinions.

To be fair, you don't get the first Espers until like 10 hours in, and the best part of the game is at the end when everything is open and there are a bunch of side quests to recruit everyone again for the final fight. The start of the game is a chore when I relay it, but once I start getting more party customization I get hooked all over again

I played it way after it was released and enjoyed it a lot. But I have a hard time enjoying other FInal Fantasy games, the combat is too repetitive, lacks depth, the stories aren't good enough, shit feels shallow. I tried FF4 or the one with Cecil, was it 5? Either way the thing was just bland as hell and I couldn't stay playing. I also tried FF12 which is quite praised, and I hated Vaan being a non character, the board skill system feeling really barebones and shit, unlock 1 square for wood helm, unlock another square for iron helm, unlock a third for the steel helm, hey fuck you man this is terrible, this is similar to a special needs developer doing his take on stat requirements for gear, then a whole lot of the board are shitty passive buffs, and the side quests are just go back somewhere you've been and kill a monster. I also thought FF7 was kinda angsty long ago, I tried playing 7 after 6 and I don't know, the whole Cloud mumbling about muh past muh amnesia was grating., and the Materia system, much like the Espers system, is not balanced and every character can get everything, it's just a stupid system that promotes grinding and allows you to turn any character into a master of everything

>> No.9896880

>>9893060
I used to play them a lot as a teenager but desu you're right, a lot of JRPGs are really hollow, especially from the 4th and 5th generations. It was around this time devs realised plenty of people would play just for the graphics, music and plot and didn't even necessarily care about the gameplay, so they casualised it and made it so you could basically just mash your way brainlessly though a lot of encounters on your way to the next cutscene.

I mean the JRPGs before this weren't incredibly deep or complex or anything, but they were often more strict about expecting you to properly manage your resources and didn't shy away from punishing you if you didn't, even if they still expected you to overcome a lot of the difficulty by grinding. The ones that came after this period aren't as punishing but still generally do a better job of requiring more varied strategies. A lot of people view the SNES and PS1 era as a kind of golden age for JRPGs but really it was the dark ages as far as gameplay was concerned.

There's always exceptions of course. I don't think it counts as /vr/, but play Etrian Odyssey if you want to see what traditional JRPG gameplay "should" be IMO.

He didn't win though. He lost at the end after saying he needed to destroy more, and the world started building itself in the ending now that peace has returned. You FFVI fans really overrate the hell out of Kefka's End of Act II victory lol. Most villains win there to set up the climax. By your reasoning, Jafar also won in Aladdin because he was able to rule over Agrabah for a little bit when he threw Aladdin out to the snow to die.

I think Final Fantasy VIII is the best example of what you're talking about. Everything in that game is broken, there's no reason to not Enc None through the entire game because of the level scaling. 100 Curagas and 80 Firagas, something you can have before you leave for Timber without grinding or cards (refine tents bought from the shop with the first SEED payment and the magic stones you get from the training zone boss) will make you be able to blast through to the final boss with just Renzokukan with your health in yellow.

I'm staggered looking back at the game and just seeing all the wasted assets, all the wasted spells that have no reason to get cast, all the monsters you have no reason to fight. 90% of the the gameplay is pointless, if a game like Halo or Zelda allowed you to just walk past 90% of the game without punishment, it would be given shit reviews. Yet at the time of its release, Final Fantasy VIII was lauded as amazing.

Right, but your power in the game is logarithmic. You're either a kid that can't get his head around the junction system and is taking 2 hours to beat a boss. Or you've got 100 of whatever junctioned to Str and HP and you're easily winning.

No, in most JRPGs including previous FF titles you-actually engage in the main gameplay during plot downtimes. That game is for people who don't like JRPGs. It fills you with clunky minigames, so that instead of being a JRPG, it's a minigame collecthathon. This attracts all sorts of fags-2deep4u storyfags, "wow random encounters are bad!" designfags, which it does by removing such annoying things those games have like monster encounters, by filling with you random minigames, thus appealing to zoomers with the above mindsets. JRPG elements bad.
