Is it just me or does this game control like clunky dog shit. I wouldn’t be so surprised if these games weren’t lauded as the absolute pinnacle of 2d platformer controls. Still a pretty good game but the controls are bad and you constantly get killed because Mario controls like a paralyzed mongoloid

That's actually a curious point. I wonder what percentage of the time the average person holds B while playing SMB1 - SMW.
If it's more than like 60%, the B speed should be default speed and you should go slower when you press B instead.

gotta be honest, i cant even imagine never having played a platformer with momentum and running. but i guess adapt and learn, it'll be worth it. wait til you learn about controlled jumps in SMW

>> No.9894254

>>9893886
OP, this is a game where you're meant to let your momentum carry you through the level. Granted, some levels such as the autoscrollers don't allow for this, but the ones where you're free to move everywhere are best played just holding B and going balls to the wall and relying on your reflexes to dodge enemies and obstacles. When you master this, it feels sublime, almost zen-like.

I very recently tried to explain to a Zoomer who plays MMO's on PC that you have to hold run and then jump, both with the same thumb. Man it was difficult to watch. They couldn't really figure out how to hold run and jump, going back to the left seemed to be almost foreign for them. I was amazed at how bad it was.

i feel like they just notice it gets harder to control if you're running so never try, like running is for the in between parts where there's no obstacles or something so that would explain why zoomers dont do it, because sprinting in modern games is just to get through the open world

Btw don't listen to most other people in this thread. Most NES era games were made with arcade design philosophy. Developers hadn't yet figured out how to make games that were long enough to warrant their price tag. Getting game overs and restarting over and over again was expected to be part of the experience for most people.

Mario 3 isn't a game that makes you start all the way over. Game over just sends you back to the start of a world, and even leaves some things like the fortress levels and hammer bros in that world completed.
>>9893886
You just need to play it more until it feels natural to you, Mario 3 has some of the most satisfying controls and physics for a platformer.

After THIRTY FIVE whole years of widely being considered one of the greatest games ever made, finally, FINALLY some brave, genius-level anon finally decided that, uh, akshually, it's bad. I'm shaken to the core. I literally fell out of my chair and stared at the screen with my mouth gaping open. What were we even doing before this incredible discovery? I can imagine a completely photorealistic apple, turn it around as a 3D object and even contextualise it in a physical space, but I think the image is probably bullshit. Why would you only be able to see an apple in greyscale, or a cartoony shape of an apple? I think the lower resolution apples are just from people who are poor at articulating what they can see in their head. Like I can imagine some people saying they can't see an apple at all, because they aren't actually 'seeing' it, just imagining it.

Absolutely just you. The controls are immaculate. Your emu setup is probably lagging to hell.
>the controls are bad and you constantly get killed because Mario controls like a paralyzed mongoloid
You certainly wouldn't have that problem on a CRT and a real console, and probably not on a halfway decent Emulator / Monitor / Joypad setup. Fix your shit.
