i don’t get these chinese knock offs. seriously just buy and hack a psp or vita or 2ds or 3ds. even if you regret it or get bored you can sell it back at basically the same as whatever you paid for it on fb marketplace. i’ve bought, hacked, tried and resold a few after i got bored. didn’t like vita and ended up keeping a psp3001. honestly though after i get bored of ps1 and psp games i’ll probably sell it and get a 3ds to play snes games on the can

People get them for emulation of systems that don't do all that well (or don't work at all) on either the 3DS or the Vita. Besides that 3DSs are currently overpriced. The Vita could have been good if the hardware could be properly put to use instead of being a slightly better PSP when it comes to homebrew. The PSP is anemic and can't even do some GBA games without a hitch.

mmm yaa depends on what you're playing though. if you're okay with whatever subset of games a psp or 3ds can play for a while then you'll never lose money because a "collector" will always pay at least what you originally paid for the system.

The Vita's hardware is not good in today's climate, you're getting the equivalent of an iPad 2's chip downclocked and 10 year old hardware is slow as bollocks. For the price you can buy a PS Vita, the Chinese handheld will win in most areas like hardware power and choice of control scheme. The Vita should be able to slot above the $50 dollar handhelds like the Miyoo theoretically but in practice, it can't even do that and the only upside is being able to play Vita games with 70-80% of the functionality.

There are some tools for rebuilding the romlist and changing the button mappings in the retro handhelds discord already. There was also a firmware update which actually made performance worse, so you might want to downgrade if yours shipped with the newer one. Downgrading the firmware boosts the SNES performance from shit to crap.

Got the RG353V and the machine shat itself while it was charging (the bottom got really hot) and playing Mupen64Plus FZ on the Android side, now it won't even boot aside from showing the Anbernic logo when there's no OS microSD card in (but without the big R symbol, pic related). Is there any solution or should I request a replacement over AliExpress?

Also, the battery seemed to be drain quite fast with ArkOS.

How new is it? And have you tried another SD card? It sounds like your microSD shat the bed, and given that your device can still turn on, I think it's fine itself. So far I've only tried putting Anbernic's stock firmware on the Kioxia 16 GB SD the machine included. I'll try with another SD card, but what bothers me is that the Android side won't boot at all even without a microSD, which it could do before.

I was curious to see if Mesen HD packs work on RG353P with Jelos, and it turns out they can.
You just place the HD Pack in /bios/HdPacks/ on the SD card and boot a NES ROM with filename matching the pack folder name in the Mesen core.

Unfortunately, performance is shit. It can run full speed without the pack, but with the HD pack it drops to less than 50% speed.

I had similar performance woes trying to run Super Game Boy with a Game Boy game loaded in the BSNES core. Technically works, but not worth doing on the handheld.

That would be cool as fuck, but my expectation for rk3588 devices is more along the size of the Odin. The Orange Pi handheld looks around that size to me at least. I've read someone say the screen was measured out to 6.2" using a reference, while /our guy/ dodo thinks it's 7". I don't know how big the Gameforce 2 is, but it definitely looks the same size as an RP3 as a minimum. Probably bigger. Expecting the rk3588 Powkiddy to be the Max 3, which I expect to be Max 2 sized at a minimum, but more likely X55 sized.

Also, isn't the chip quite power hungry and in need of a fan? I'd feel like that alone would disqualify the possibility of a candybar size, but I guess the existence of the KTR1 with it's ludicrous 7000mAh sized battery and vapor chamber cooling proves it might be possible.

If you want to play many 2D games then I'd strongly advise against the Odin personally. The d-pad placement is really bad, and not just because it's below the analog. RP3+ is the way to go imo: lightweight, surprisingly comfortable, well balanced size, and better speakers + placement than the other two (not that the placement is great compared to front-firing). I will warn you, however, that while the vast majority of the Saturn library runs great, there are still some edge cases here and there: Grandia still can't run fullspeed in battle. Saturn Bomberman won't boot in the standalone emulator and requires beetle core from Retroarch to boot, but runs like shit there. Burning Rangers DOES boot in standalone, but requires frameskip to run fullspeed, and worse yet has an issue where the fucking fire won't be visible, so you'd need to run it in beetle core except it runs like shit there. I think Dragon Force 2 also has an issue like Burning Rangers where you'll want to run it in beetle core due to an emulation issue in standalone, but doesn't reach fullspeed there (haven't actually tried it myself).

I don't know of any other Saturn games with issues on the chips, most of what I've tried runs great, just thought I'd give you a fair warning. Odin should have enough power to run Grandia battles fullspeed, and may or may not have enough extra power to brute force the other 3 games in beetlecore. To me it's still a DOA option because of the d-pad placement, but it's your choice.

>>9896910
Thanks for the in depth reply anon. I'm not against a dpad below the analog but you're saying it's ergonomics is bad? It's a shame since it seems to have a bit more power than the RP3+/flip but I will be playing a decent amount of 2d games as well as 3d. As long as most saturn games are fine I can cope, I know the emulator is a work in progress. Think I'm leaning towards the 3+ despite its retarded start/select placement since it has actual analogs rather than sliders

>> No.9896941

Confession time: bought a gamesir....its fantstic really....but ita true. The dpad is so in the wrong fucking spot. Its painful.... good for other consoles, particulrly nintendo consoles. But tried playing final doom psx and it sucked. Ps1 is a no go. Honestly what were they thinking?

>I'm not against a dpad below the analog but you're saying it's ergonomics is bad?
That was my experience at least, yeah. Even though I don't like d-pad below analog, the reality is I can deal with it on stuff like the RP2+ just fine. The additional problem on the Odin is just how much further below the analog stick it is, it really was impossible for me to use for 2D games. And as far as the general ergonomics go, I think this is more of a personal issue, but for some reason that thing cramped the shit out of my hands more than any other handheld I've ever used. It's a shame because it always looked really comfy to me before I got one, but I guess everything was in and out at all the perfectly wrong places to fuck with my hands or something.

As far as the retarded start/select on the RP3+, I have to admit the start button placement is surprisingly comfortable and enjoyable to use. Select is a pain in the ass to hit though.

>I was under the impression the flip had better ergonomics than the 3+, that's literally it. Maybe I'm wrong and it's the same?
Not that anon, but I'm already replying so w/e. I heard RGC and someone else I'm forgetting (Dodo maybe?) say the RP3 is more comfortable than the Flip, despite them both really liking the Flip. I don't have a Flip so I can't personally vouch for how comfortable it is or isn't, but I can say the RP3+ is surprisingly comfortable. I bought one of those official grips for it out of morbid curiosity, and it does feel very nice, but I basically never use it. I found I just prefer the simple, light airy feel of the device on its own.

The d-pad itself is fucking awesome, in fact it's pretty much the same d-pad as on the RP3+, it's just the placement that is fucked. But yeah, you might be okay with the placement honestly. If that's the one you want to go for, I will say there was a lot to love about the Odin.

Yeah, I'd 100% opt for the one of the transparent ones for the nice texture. The other colors are fairly slick, which isn't bad at all, but the transparent ones have a nice subtle bumpy texture all over it that really elevates the feeling experience imo. This is also true for the Odins btw.

way I see it there's four tiers for these kind of handhelds;

Low Tier: handhelds like the Miyoo Mini and RG35XX, generally priced somewhere between 60 and 100 dollars at their base price, ideally should be able to handle all 8 bit and 16 bit consoles and handhelds, and pretty much all non-Saturn 32 bit consoles too

Lower Mid Tier: handhelds like the Anbernic RG353 family, generally between 90 and 150 dollars in price, in addition to what the previous tier can handle they can usually handle a good amount of Saturn, N64, Dreamcast, and PSP games, and if it's a device with a touch screen then it can generally handle anything DS related(and potentially some 3DS games), usually has some manner of Wi-Fi capability allowing for gaming or media streaming and Bluetooth for external controllers, often has some form of AV output too

High Mid Tier: handhelds like the Retroid Pocket 3+ and Retroid Pocket Flip, generally priced between 140 and 200 dollars, in addition to previous tier capabilities they generally can do at least some GCN and PS2 games as well as 3DS, might be able to do some Wii as well

High Tier: if it costs more than 200 dollars than it probably is in this tier(also likely to not really be a "pocketable" system but still quite travel friendly), systems like the Odin and Steam Deck, can usually handle anything any of the lower tiers can run at more or less full speed, can handle most all Wii & Wii-U titles, and usually a decent bit of PS3 and PS-Vita emulation as well, emulation for Xbox or Xbox 360 is spotty at best, can usually handle at least some Switch as well, most of these devices are really good at game streaming, several use either Windows or SteamOS so can handle at least some PC gaming as well

The RG351P despite being shilled to me as just perfect for PS1 has some serious slowdowns with a few games (and funnily enough, some PSP games are quite playable, and most DS ones at native resolution run perfectly, something that I've heard plenty of people deny as well).

for content running at 320x224 like Megadrive or 320x240 like PS1, you get very close to using up the full vertical space while using integer scale, but not quite. Still results in an image bigger than what you get on a 3.5" 4:3 480p screen. PSP also scales really close to using the fullscreen but not quite, but it doesn't really matter because PPSSPP allows you to render the game at the exact resolution of your device. Yabasanshiro for Saturn has a similar feature that allows you to render the game at your device's exact vertical resolution.

480p stuff like Dreamcast is... well, you don't even have a choice to integer scale in the standalone emulators nor enough juice to play in retroarch, so it's not like you have a choice. It somehow still looks good at 480p, 720p (1.5x internal res), or downsampled from 960p (2x internal res), but the 720p display on the Powkiddy x28 would be a perfect fit for the 1.5x option.

I found out that THREE of my best friends never played A Link to the Past. They were all excited about the new TotK, and one of them was wearing a Link to the Past t-shirt.

>"Oh man this will probably be the bestest Zelda game ever!"
>"Finally something better than A Link to the Past you think?"
>"Oh I never played that one."
>"Dude you're literally wearing the shirt right now......"

Then I found out that the other guys there who had also all just bought Tears of the Kingdom had never played anything earlier than Ocarina.

What the fuck is wrong with my friends? Should I just load Snes9x and the ROM on a USB and install it on their PCs the next time I'm over? Or should I just buy them all some cheap chinkheld just so I can make them play this game together while our wives make us snacks?

Is the PowKiddy V90 a decent purchase for small, cheap, GBA/NES game play, with maybe a bit of SNES? FunKey S seems too tiny to be enjoyable and the Data Frog SF2000 is too large. I'm not sure what else I'd even look at, or what might be on the horizon. Size is an important factor for me as I've already got too much stuff I carry around with me in my pockets.

Update: Got a replacement and so far it's working good. Initially I charged it once using my PC's USB port and it displayed two thin blue lines on the display due to overheat while charging, but they disappeared after a couple of hours. Hopefully I didn't damage it that way? Now using a USB 5V/1A charger in order to avoid damaging the battery.

It's the V1 screen this time. Is there any major difference against the V2 one, or it doesn't really matter?

Installed ArkOS once again and it's doing the job well, turning off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth seems to help with the battery. Emulation performance is what I expected so far, with the nice surprise of SwanStation working nicely with the software renderer. Only issue currently is that I can't get the inputs working on Amiberry.

RP3+ came in today. Ordered it from a reseller based locally, paid a little more than I should have but considering I ordered it yesterday I'm happy with the speed.

Overall seems really nice, good size for a handheld which is my main issue with the Switch and Steam Deck - it's not too big and not too small. Screen is nice, too. It has enough power to do Normalx4 +bilinear filtering which is nice. I have no fucking clue how the filter works but at the cost of the ever so slightest bit of sharpness to pixels my games don't look distorted without integer.

Still no fucking clue what they were thinking with the start button placement but I'll learn to deal with it. First Retroid product I think I'm going to actually use and enjoy. Gonna play same Pokemon Heart Gold now.

The original Gameboy resolution was only 160x144, on a 480p display you can integer prescale 3x or 4x, use a dot matrix filter, then bilinear scale to fill the screen and preserve aspect ratio.

Incidentally, the Analogue Pocket has a 1600x1440 display which allows you to dedicate a 10x10 area to every Game Boy pixel, specifically for filtering to reproduce the look of various Game Boy model displays.

The Deck is great man. I'm the anon a few posts above that bought a Flip recently, which is great for the pocketability I bought it for, but the Deck feels very premium and will play whatever the fuck you want. Yeah it's big but it's very comfy actually. Absolutely worth the money based on emulation alone. Built in Steam is just a bonus.

Also, swapping the SSD is incredibly easy even if you're not tech savvy. The only even remotely similar thing I've done is swap my PSP's stick and screen and even I was able to swap my Deck's SSD with minimal hassle. Works like a charm. So if you want an end-all mass storage handheld, I recommend a 64GB Deck since it's the cheapest then just throwing in the SSD of your choosing. It takes SD cards too so yeah. Many filter presets in Retroarch are actually a combination of other filter passes.
For 480p devices, the interpolation / sharp-bilinear-2x-prescale filter in general is excellent for filling the screen for stuff that doesn't quite integer scale perfectly like SNES or GBA. It works by doing a nearest neighbour integer scale 2x, and then does a bilinear upscale to fill the screen.
A significant number of filters will incorporate nearest neighbour integer scaling for the first pass to set the basis for the handheld pixel or dot-matrix aesthetic. Turns out a 3x3 pixel grid for each pixel on a handheld's screen works pretty well, when you just darken two edges of the grid a little.

Are there any decent rom sets out there that only have original releases? If a game was made in the US, it's the US version. If it was made in Japan, it's the Japanese version.

I've found a few pre-made sets, but they're all filled with burger shit or crappy fan translations. Do I really have to go through fullsets and pick out every game myself?

Anyway, yeah, it's tribalism. People get emotionally invested. Most of them are trans folk i suspect.

No, it's even dumber and weird than that. They were complaining that people were bad mouthing the ROG Ally on the Steam Deck sub. Practically every post was a Ally fanboy bragging how much better the Ally was then the Deck (this is still happening in those call out threads) so the mods banned Ally discussion as off topic. Now people keep posting vague call outs about toxicity and fanboyism simply because they can't just shit on the Deck and suck off the Ally.... On the Steam Deck sub. The entire situation is retarded and peak reddit. Lmao.

It sounds like your seller is loading the microSD with ROMs.
Naturally, a 128gb microSD can store fewer games than a 256gb microSD card.

You don't necessarily want to use the pre-loaded ROMs, they can be poorly organised or tampered with, they might have cheat codes patched in.
I remember trying the pre-loaded ROMs I got one time, and games like Super Mario World and Gunstar Heroes had invincibility or infinite health cheat codes baked in.

Just sold my new and unused Miyoo+ on ebay and took my trusty RG280V out of the drawer.

The Miyoo+ had some things that bothered me too much to enjoy it.

I only play Gameboy and GBA games on these chinkhelds, so my silver brick with adam cfw got me covered.

Feeling pretty good about it.

First game finished on the RP3+, still got some side shit to do but it's mainly done.
Honestly the first chink device I've actually really enjoyed. Normalx4+Bilinear looks really good and sharp, the screen quality for once isn't completely washed out either. Nice size for a handheld too, not too big and not too small.

Your 3DSXL has a shit screen with a godawful refresh rate, an awkward resolution that means you either play games in bilinear like many weren't originally presented or integer scaling which looks like shit because of the huge black borders and isn't powerful enough to do any kind of filtering to overcome this. It also can't do Saturn, N64 or a solid chunk of the PSX library.
Your 3DS, even the 'new' ones don't mog anything asides those shitty $20 handhelds.
>b-but it plays these games I like! I don't care about the shit screen!
Good for you. Don't pretend it mogs anything else though.

>>Your 3DSXL has a shit screen with a godawful refresh rate,
It has a better screen than every disgusting IPS panel I've seen, thanks to the screen door effect breaking up the lines. It's not as good as say, the GBA screen, but it's a more comfortable device with a much bigger screen. You don't need filtering when the screen itself is the filter, and complaints about 3D titles are meaningless because long form experiences are far better suited to home use on a more comfortable, 20"+ screen.

Don't get me wrong, I wish the chinks could make something better. But they're all still using the worst screens ever built, I'd rather play on a fucking stock game gear.

This is a Samsung S7+ 12" Amoled, it cost 1200€ when it was new because it was the best in terms of software, flexibility, screen, battery and power.
It has a 256GB internal storage and a sdcard slot with a 1TB sdcard. It comes with the best stylus made so far at no additional cost. It also has a 5G modem.
Once my software support runs out in a few years, i'll install LineageOS and it will become a heirloom for generations to come.

Legitimately worthless for anyone with a functioning brain.

I mean, you're right, the Analogue Pocket is the only device in this thread worth owning on any level, the only problem is that it's twice as expensive as it should be after shipping, and it's incredibly locked down so you can't even take advantage of the good screen.

A pocket, with the same screen or better, a proper d-pad, a locking controller grip like the Switch has for the joycons, and made by a company that doesn't despise freedom in order to sell 200 dollar docks or shitty adapters for carts, would be an end-game handheld. Hell, while we're at it, add in proper AA battery support instead of li-on junk so it won't be landfill e-waste in 10 years.

rechargeable AAs that i have tried are garbage for sessions longer than an hour and they are babysitting-required firehazard to recharge

i hope someone makes a direct competitor to the pocket even as a gbc system on a chip sans-fpga

their business practices are questionable
but you can do what i did and poach one used
i wouldnt even consider recommending it without openfpga
and i do carry the delusion that the updates are coming for most of the cores

>>rechargeable AAs that i have tried are garbage for sessions longer than an hour
Have you not tried any in the past decade? I love modern LSD batteries. They last a year in a drawer and lose maybe 10%, it takes 2 seconds to swap them out so you don't have to be tethered to a wall or a dock ever, and if you're going out you can take a few spares and get 20+ hours battery life.

If they had filter support on open cores, it might be worth using. As is, I expect that basic feature that should've been in at launch to take them another year or two, if it ever arrives. Plus, I thought it already had save states? They just call them "memories", unless that's something you can't access for any of the real cores, and you can only do it on the locked down cart shit.

If I could pick one up for 150 bucks, I'd probably get one, the chinks have had a few years at this point and none of them know what they're doing.

>> No.9915727

>>9915719
save states are core dependant still
same goes for the filtering effects
its not a MAJOR deal but i hate being able to use them only some of the time

the rechargables i have are duracell/energizer and a random shitmon brand

what specific brand do you recommend?

The problem with the GBA/GBC is they use a simple circuit for determining remaining power based on voltage, and NiCad cells all run close to the minimum detection threshold (1.2V) for a long time rather than being 1.5V. Plus a lot of battery contacts are corroded and weak at this point so a random knock can kill the power, and modern flashcarts put a lot of power demands on the cells so it's possible for momentary dips to go below the minimum, especially if you've got backlit screens in them.

These days I'm starting to see lithium AAs which will do 1.5V that'll probably be better suited to modded handhelds due to less voltage drop. For stock handhelds, NiCad is fine, although you'll get early low battery warnings.

It is technically 800x240p, but almost everything uses it in pixel doubled mode.
The SM64 decomp port has an optional true 800px mode which looks noticeably sharper but is still visibly not using antialiasing.
The trained eye can also see that the screen door effect is much stronger vertically than horizontally on the 3DS, because of the pixels are denser horizontally. I kinda like it, it gives a mild scanline-like effect.

>> No.9916806

>>9916773
Huh, I figured the other half were just turned off when not in 3D mode, I guess that makes more sense though. The scanline effect is what makes the screen so much nicer to use than all the more modern IPS stuff, although honestly the 2DS doesn't look too bad there. The pixel borders in these cheap LCDs just improve the image, it's funny how fancier screens look so much worse at low resolutions.
