yaaa i’m a big fan of the ps1 era 2d graphics. it really felt like the peak. we had mvc, alpha 2 and 3, castlevania, metal slug, darkstalkers, bof, ff origins, abe, and rayman even. there was some great looking and fun 2d games. i know other consoles had better ports or more frames, but i wish there was more for the ps1. isn’t good japanese 2d ps1 exclusives?

Some fans of the series endlessly complained because they were a significant departure from the old style, but the sprites of the 3DS Mario & Luigi games were amazing, some of the best in recent years. Possibly the reason why the company went bankrupt even.

You people that post Blasphemous and Owlboy and similar modern stuff have no taste. It's the limitations that made early pixel art (80s - 90s) to be so special. Take that away and that modern pixel art is just a low res digital painting. The early pixel art is akin to mosaics and requires much more ingenuity. How can you not tell the quality difference between something like Owlboy and SOTN is astounding.

What makes pixel art pixel art instead of low-res/low-palette digital art or oekaki. Is the control of the pixels.

Was each pixel placed intentionally and does changing a cluster of pixels or even a single pixel change the shape? In those examples the answer is yes.

You're almost there but not quite. With your definition, oekaki and low-res digital art could be pixel art, despite that being the opposite point you're trying to make. If all it takes is low resolution and low palette, then I could take a photo, reduce it to 256 colours and 320x240 and say its pixel art but that would not be pixel art.

What's sad is that the skill of making great pixel art is so hopelessly lost to time now that we now get people who genuinely can't tell good piece of art from a mediocre or a bad one.

People who think Owlboy has "some of the best pixel art", ffs, what's wrong with you? It's ok looking on its own right, but it's just fucking tasteless compared to classic pixel art games - there's no control, no restraint, no getting around restrictions to make the best animations with limited memory, no creative use of a limited pallete and resolution etc. It's just pretty trees and skies and "muh cute pixel aesthetics". It's just playing your heartstrings by poorly imitating the classics, and it's all what it gets to fool you people.

Fucking Wario running animation from the other's guy's gif has better pixel art that the whole of Owlboy because of creative use of what was a available to the devs.
Or fucking Street Fighter or KoF or whatever, are you people blind to the sheer difference in the level of art in these games compared to Owlboy?

If you go through his art and think it's shit then you're really just an idiot.

>it hasn't got the NES palette specifically, oh no it sucks.

Amiga games were using 512 colours, I highly doubt you'll find more than that on any Owlboy screenshot.

SotN doesn't restrict itself in colour choice either, so your point is moot. Neither do SNK games or late Capcom sprite work. Wario Land is hardly an example of restricted colour choice either.

The whole point of Owlboy and Blasphemous was to move pixel art forward as an art style rather than just relying on nostalgia. Shovel Knight is the type of game you're thinking of (which was well done pixel art too for the most part, but was definitely relying on nostalgia with half assed NES restrictions that they weren't very strict with).

You're the one who is focused on nostalgia here. You don't actually like pixel art, you like retro games.
