RTCW has a really good rotary gun with it's Venom Gun. It always makes me annoyed when the "minigun" has a sad and slow firerate, just put in a regular gpmg if you're not prepared to give the minigun the fire rate and destructive power it deserves.
The Quake 2 minigun is also pretty good, when it spins up it starts to really spit that hot lead but unfortunately it also has an issue with the lack of muzzle flash and it would need shell ejections and shit to truly feel like a minigun.

Make it as unwieldy and ammo hog as you want to or only usable on vehicle mounts or whatever but when the players gets to let 'er rip, it needs to be POWERFUL.

Could someone help me. I want to make a simple script that takes a screenshot at the start of each level.
https://zdoom.org/wiki/Structs:LevelLocals here I got the method name
https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?t=63789&sid=4381850e3986d82c01389a7714896848&start=15 here I found the cvar name that should be enabled for this method to work

They're both small and the least predictable enemy in Doom, so you can easily create an engaging encounter just by slapping a bunch of them down. Making Hell Knights or Barons as dangerous requires either far greater numbers or more constrained space and Mancubi, Arachnotrons, Cacos, and Pain Elementals can really only function well in big open spaces. You can put any amount of Revenants anywhere and they'll be more engaging and less tedious than any of the alternatives.

It's mega jank and often broken at times and very often the level design is annoying as there will be entire rooms and sections that serve absolutely no purpose BUT it does have some very cool tricks and little flashes of brilliance here and there.

I really like DOOM 2 WADs at about plutonia difficulty, but man, I can only play 1-3 levels at a time before wanting to do something else. It feels like such a stark contrast from the first three DOOM 1 episodes where you can just blast through 'em, but maybe it's just me getting old.

Any individual sprite, texture or flat can have any color from the palette rendered as fullbright according to a list, predefined for each game and extended/overwritten by pwads. The simplicity of this method means that, unlike gzdoom's, there's no gradation to the brightened area. Since it's sectioned by palette you also can't have bright and dark pixels of the same color on a single case. You couldn't make the chaingunner's eyes glow with this method since it would also make the blood on his face glow, for instance. It seems pretty nice compared to the strictly hardcoded brightmaps from before, but I don't know of any existing wads that accommodate this format.

Trying to make anything more complicated than a simple reload functionality in Decorate warrants you being very adept at Decorate and willing to juggle a million custominventories.
If you're not and you're not trying to make something for Zandro, you're basically better off learning ZScript, because while it has a higher entry requirement and a horrible documentation, depending on what you want to do it's still way easier doing it that way.
webm related was made in ZScript with about a third of the codelines I needed in Decorate AND the effect was actually working as intended unlike the kinda-approximation I could achieve in Decorate.

>>9886384
NTA, but to add to that from experience: a lot of people in the DECORATE simp camp greatly underestimate the power of a well-structured and simple codebase, which ZScript allows you to do, unlike the former. Emphasis on simple. If you see some overengineered bullshit in ZScript, that's a lack of skill, not so much the language's fault (it'll be a while before the technical limitations start bothering you). The skill bar for entry may be a lot lower for DECORATE, but your project will inevitably crumble under a metric fuckton of spaghetti code and become an unmaintainable mess where instead of spending ten minutes adding a feature you spend ten hours if not longer. Anyone who has fiddled with SBARINFO knows that very well. The threshold for what's considered peak bullshit is reached much faster in DEC than anything else, even ACS arguably.

As for the documentation, the problem isn't lack of it. The ZScript wiki page has sufficient information and examples on pretty much all of the basic building blocks you're ever going to need. That's not the issue here. People just want the wiki to always spoonfeed them the solution to their very specific need. That's not how it works. All the wiki does is give you a list of the tools available and tells you how they're used. When and where to use them is entirely up to you. I suppose another issue is just not knowing where to start as a beginner. Best suggestion I can give is dig out some old DEC mod you've made and convert it to ZScript. That way you'll have a clear goal for what you want to do. Start small. Make it a rule to not use inventory items as counters, to abandon DEC practices, and follow it religiously. Either you make the whole jump or you don't jump at all. And don't give me that weak "I can't into code lmao" shit. Give it a try. You'll find it's a lot easier if you stop listening to the people telling you how ultra ballbustingly hard ZScript is. It can be frustrating at times, but what isn't?

Try to learn what the code you're given does instead of just slapping it in the editor like a wet noodle and calling it a day, or worse - complaining that it doesn't work becase you can't extrapolate that "int yourvariablehere;" means you replace that name with your own instead of copying it and using it as is like a complete retard.

>Mind you, I do totally see Graf somehow rendering GZDoom incompatible with Decorate and losing his mind at anybody who sticks with old versions to keep being able to use those mods.

He can't do that. Both DECORATE and ZScript are far too intertwined backend-wise to pull of something like that without rewriting the entire scripting backend. Not to mention the DECORATE functions are not obsolete in ZScript at all, so this would also break pretty much all ZScript mods too. If anything, I find it more likely he'll drop GZDoom altogether in favor of Raze.

Yeah I can see that. GZDoom already has multiple commercial products to its name, as well as more on the horizon. Graf could call it "complete" and move on to new projects. Reminds me to keep going on my goals. We keep driving into the night.

FPS, playing IIRC as some sort of mage? Only thing I remember clearly there was this item that that after picking up temporary froze time and you could fire (fireballs?) at frozen enemies, then the time would unfreeze again and fireballs would actually start moving and strike the enemies.

VirtualMidiSynth can convert files. That's possibly the laziest and fastest way with near-zero effort. Alternatively you can set up fluidsynth, but it requires command line and the documentation kind of sucks for real. This was the command line for the last time I used it:

fluidsynth.exe -C 0 -R 0 -T wav -F Output.wav G:\GZDoom\Soundfonts\Arachno.sf2 KoD83.mid

-C is chorus, -R is reverb, -T is filetype, -F is for the output/input stuff.

Half the time he's broken shit because some other retard submitted a half-assed PR. Many such cases. Most recent example:
Except in this case he refuses to fix it despite the fact it would break a total number of 2 mods, and that's probably a stretch. As much as I defend Graf from a programmer perspective, sometimes he does things I can't really understand, nor defend. I'd rather he made this consistent than keep it as is, but whatever. What bothers me the most is that he refuses to break backwards compatibility to fix absolutely horrible hacks that bog down the codebase and fuck me in the ass by not allowing rad features, but breaks it for some lame stuff. Like if you're gonna break things, at least make it worth my while. I always use cutting-edge features and don't play many mods, so I can't really complain about being forced to use old versions. Backward compatibility is cancer in programming form and has the potential to quite literally kill a piece of software, but it's hard to understand why if you've never felt the frustration of not being able to fix something ever again. Forward compatibility is king, but back in the day the people working on the engine didn't really know better.

It's not just him, near enough the entire team is weirdly touchy, I had one of them go apeshit at me because I keep some builds of like GZ Doom 2.5 and shit about for mods that utterly break on recent versions.

Thank the masses of bumbling retards screeching about how updates break their mods.
And since he's a literal boomer with a regular day job, I assume he doesn't keep track of the million mods that would break during an update and just "considers" those that are currently on his radar.

There is a massive psychological divide between the common user and the programmer. I've felt that first hand, having developed mods for like a decade. Most people who just want to pley gaem don't understand why developers break things, and developers don't understand why people don't stop using the old broken versions. It's not that they're trying to fuck you over, they can literally no longer comprehend why you're not thinking like them. Both parties are right for themselves. If the devs didn't have the "go forward, leave what's behind" mindset, we'd still be using DeHackEd. It's one of those necessary evil things. I just wish they'd put more thought into accepting PRs from randos and put more planning into features. I also suspect fixing those broken mods to work with newer versions would be a rather easy task, too. I firmly believe none of this would have been a problem if people were allowed to pick up, fix, and repost working versions of broken mods instead of getting "HAVE U PERMISSION'D?!" all over by the moderators. The mods are broken to begin with because the author has long since fucked off and for all intents and purposes might as well be dead. Unfortunately, most mods don't really have a permissive license either because the old modding community wasn't necessarily a programming community, so licenses were kind of whatever. It's kind of a moral dilemma when it comes to stuff like this, too. Do you violate someone's intellectual property rights by re-releasing something without their permission and make a lot of people happy in the process, or do you sleep calmly at night?

That's a messy fucking subject in itself, especially after the Ion Maiden asset debacle, they basically set themselves up as a protection thing of they'll protect your shit if you're in with them but if you're out of favor they'll look the other way.

Especially on ZDoom you'll see like eighty "I fixed BD" threads, a few from people chummy with the moderators and they all get a pass because none of the moderators give a shit there.

I've forgotten the exact numbers as that was years ago, but roughly 30-35% of the mod's code at the time was just A_JumpIfInventory spaghetti. About 13000 lines, IIRC, or around there. Even circlejerk aside it's a moral grey area to begin with. Intellectual property needs to be respected, but at the same time that comes at the cost of preventing objectively good outcomes from occuring. Talking strictly in the modding scene and assuming the mod is actually abandoned. Obviously, if you do re-release something, you shouldn't ever claim you did the entire thing yourself, that's just a plain old dick move. But I feel that as long as you give credit where it's due and not claim ownership, I don't know what the big deal is. If the author somehow crawls out from underneath whatever rock they inhabit to complain, you either take the mod down or shove it in their hands and tell them to fix their shit or relicense it under MIT license or something.

I suspect they'll continue this trend, but after the unsaid recent event, I don't think they're going to be as aggressive as they were before.
Also Doom World seemed to siphon a lot of the modders, so I have hope one day people can finally make unofficial updates to mods so long as they're clearly labeled unofficial -- like every other modding community allows.
Till then at least Term and HDoomGuy have basically said, repeatedly, they do not care if you update their mods so long as you make it very clear it's unofficial.

Use ZScript. But I'll tell you why from a practical perspective. Back in the DECORATE day, a mod called Bullet-Eye had like 12000 lines of SBARINFO code (not exaggerating). That number growed exponentially due to the very basic scripting SBARINFO allows, which essentially boils down to if/else, so you end up with MASSIVE fucking if/else chains just to display that one extra weapon you just added. And it gets progressively worse. There is NO way around that. It's a physical inevitability. Now, if you had a visual editor, that could potentially alleviate some of the issues like having to change 500 offsets, but the moment you have to rework something, that won't save you. And you are also technically limited in what you can do because the primary tool in SBARINFO is inventory tokens. You have some super simple array support, but even that is indirect as from what I can see on the wiki you need to use ACS global arrays in combination with DrawNumber and such.

For contrast, the mod now has exactly 1617 lines of code in the HUD file, post-redesign from the other day, and that's with all the braces. Mor'ladim can keep adding weapons, equipment items, and inventory items until the world caves in and he still wouldn't need to add a single line of code to that file. The reason I shill ZScript so much and will die on this hill is because it allows for god-tier automation in the right hands. The purpose of programming at its core is to automate things. If you're smart, you'll make them easier to extend, too. If you have the option to bash your head open trying to figure out how to work with ZScript HUDs to get to a point where you don't have to touch it anymore, take that over bashing your head against increasingly denser SBARINFO with no chance of ever being able to just forget the file exists. I'll drop a simple commented ZScript HUD I wrote for Endie a while back as a starting point once I manage to dig it up later.

Though right now it's only at 4061 lines of code total for four playable classes. I intend on adding some more classes later and they'll have animated HUD faces too.

Anytime. Hopefully you'll find it useful. I definitely would have done the advanced one differently today, but that might have been too arcane and would have had the opposite effect. Sometimes it's a better to do things half-assed at the start just so you can begin rolling, then refactor once you get a better idea of what could be done better. Trying to do things The Right Way™ from the start usually ends in a deadlock because you can't possibly predict everything. Plus you get ideas as you code.

I haven’t ran into any “puzzles” in 2 yet, just oddly shaped “keys”. You have to come across someone’s bones, then you have to take them to a mill to ground the bones up, you also need to find a key to open the mill, then you have to take the crushed bones to an altar that make a “transmogthingy potion” that you have to take to this golden wall underwater in another level. Touching this gold wall while holding the potion turns it into wood. Then you smash the wood wall and get a castle key on the other side.

I don't know how many people care about that. They care more about covering for their serial abuser internet fuckbuddy and the moderator teams response being "we don't want any bad publicity so we'll try and smooth all this over and cover for them, going so far as to write an apology letter on their behalf and ask them to sign it".
What pillow said was right too. If it were any other demographic they would've been dropped like a hot coal.

Before Doom really got into serious development Tom wanted to move onto another Commander Keen game but rest of team said they didn't want to. Especially Adrian who said he despised having to do 'kiddie' art. Again the team disagreed and said simplicity is better

Yeah Adrian despising Keen is a well-known one. But I never thought about these things in relation to one another, that Tom may have been still stuck on Keen and may have brought over some kind of overlap or influence from it.

When Doom Delta won Cacoawards I started reading a bit more about the background and development for the first time and my impression was became that Tom was the only guy really worldbuilding and thinking about story when the rest of id seemed to be occupied with other aspects. And that Tom's big ideas were kind of an unnecessary bloat that one day they thought to be entirely cuttable.

I had a girlfriend that was 18, when I was 16, but come on Anon: We know the internet is always playing optics when it comes to this shit.
To clarify they mentioned it briefly, in past tense, meaning they were likely younger than 18 themselves. The person who got him was literally the meme: He was 17 year and 364 days old you sick fuck.
But I think it's fair to say the event wasn't just about Marisa, had it just been that by anyone else they would've just been banned/kicked and everyone say: "Wow, I never knew he could've done such an evil thing." and moved on.
It's that Marisa did a lot things that if anyone else did they would've been banned immediately, but they were constantly excused: If I flirted with a mod creator, and still flirted with her, even after she told me to stop I wouldn't just be banned: I would've been killed.

The first two major elevators I tried in the first unit didn’t work for me either, but those two elevators made up 66% of the issues I had in playing the original campaign through the mod. The remaining 33% were in returning from the low-gravity secret level: The low-grav didn’t disappear, so just make a backup save before you play it through the mod.
If more elevators goof up in later units there could be some weird files floating around in your Q2 folder. The other minor issues I had were some gib sounds looping for a moment before stopping, and sometimes those shotgun guards felt too accurate.

So, the question to you, fine people - how do you run that game? What options do you use? WON version, steam, or Xash 3D? Throw at me everything you think might be relevant, down to using default installation directories and such.

There're though. Couldn't dig up the gameplay since haven't played the games myself, but there're quotes like this out there:
>Probably the two most memorable things about Catacomb Abyss are that its series boasted some of the most eye-poppingly awful wall textures ever, and a really cute timestop mechanic. The items needed were incredibly rare, but with a little cheating you could freeze time, lay down zillions of shots, restart time, and watch enemies getting absolutely annihilated.
https://www.pcgamer.com/saturday-crapshoot-ultimate-shareware-games-collection-vol-1/

The example is for Catacomb Abyss, but I'm sure all games in the series had "freeze time power-up".

Also you're supposed to play the pk3 version, unlike this one anon some weeks back who made an absolute tit of himself.

How can I view Quake entity definitions? I need to know the default health of the Commandos in the Violent Rumble resources, but it's not in the description box.
Come to think of it, the only Commandos I can find are "preset", and the other presets don't have the default health visible either. Is there a generic Commando enemy that I'm missing? Progs Dump manual yields nothing.

The Commandos, along with all the other 'preset' monsters, are just hardcoded implementations of monsters made with existing customization options. You can see all of them in presets.qc, but I probably should add FGD descriptions to them. All the commando variants have 150 health and 60% armor.

Shotgun with SSG is balanced with the spread, shotgun paired with chaingun is balanced by ammo availability of shells and bullets. Once you have the chaingun and the super shotgun, that’s when the pump starts to slip in relevancy since you can get the same or perfect accuracy with the chaingun while saving shells for the super.

today i learned you can still die in godmode on doom by getting telefragged by one of the boxes the idol of sin shoots out.
i was testing a map im making and the idea is the idol is behind a force barrier that stops all damage from reaching it and you fight your way around this arena to find 4 levers to lower the shield.
i had only the idol in and simple ways from and to the levers.
i was running around in god mode to see if i did it right and if i can activate the levers in any order because im a codelet.
imagine my surprise when i one of those fucking boxes came straight at me and i died by telefrag. that was the death message too.

thanks for reading my blog.

If you're curious about the specifics, god mode only protects you from attacks that do less than 1000 damage, and telefrags do 10000. GZDoom adds a "god2" command which makes you truly invincible.

I've already thought of a way around this.
The real problem with such a project is that nobody should be submitting more than one map.
