9888543 No.9888543 [Reply] [Original]

I finished this for the first time. I am a zoomer who grew up with battle network and zero, but after finished the collections, I wanted to try Legends because it was the one mega man series I hadn't tried.
Clunky as fuck, yeah, but once I got into it, I REALLY got into it. There was a feeling, like taking a summer vacation, the little interactions with the city, it all was so fun, reminded me a bit of early Battle Network city interactions, but far more involved.
But by the ending I was feeling really sad, to the point I am scared of going to Legends 2 with the knowledge that will be it, forever.

Old games often feel "clunky" because you're used to modern games which all control the same. Back in the 90s you had to adapt to different controls for nearly every single game. For games such as the classic Resident Evil trilogy you also have to adapt to stuff like fixed camera angles too.
Anyway, glad you enjoyed the game.

It blew my mind coming back to this game and finding out it has a huge dungeon level. As a kid I think I remember starting that level up, walking around outside, then exiting. It never occurred to me that the door would be unlocked so I never tried again.

It was one of my favorite games as a child and I had extremely fond memories. That dungeon is a massive portion of the game and everything is built around it and I somehow managed to completely miss it.

Going back to it made me love it even more because I ended up getting the full experience instead of playing only about half of the game.

Anyways, yeah it's a great game. Glad you enjoyed it, I especially liked the interconnected underground area and the light RPG mechanics to upgrade Megaman. Insanely charming game and the visuals hold up insanely well for an early 3D title. I found the 2nd title to be a little less enjoyable for me as it feels like they ramped up the difficulty a bit to compensate for the "better" controls. Most people don't realize you can just press circle+any direction to snap the camera in that direction. Mastering this makes movement through the game feel great. The movement itself basically just feels like WASD but with a d-pad. Really not a problem. Mega Man Legends does not have tank controls.

Legends 2 however sneakily hides modern controls in the settings menu. Control scheme 4 maps all key actions to the shoulder buttons, allocates the left stick to movement and the right stick to the camera - it feels perfect. Legends 2 is also a showcase for the PlayStation. The opening sequence is entirely realtime and shows off high resolution textures, clever camera set ups, tons of effects, swaps seamlessly between scenes. I wonder how difficult it was to set all this up.

It's a good job, the voice acting for the era in specific, but due to branding the character of Rock Volnutt becomes MegaMan Volnutt, forcing an explanation of why the 14 year old apprentice of a seasoned archeologist would have such a dumb name in the sequel. It's also funny you can tell how quick some cleanup was done (Capcom barely gives time and budget when it comes to Mega Man, so that checks out, just look at Battle Network) with every non-HUD instance of the Mega Buster being mislabelled "MegaMan Buster", as "Rock" was essentially replaced with "MegaMan" on Microsoft Word on the quick.

It's not MML's controls that are a problem, it's the feedback. When you're holding the fire button, while moving (like when fighting a boss for example), Volnutt's shooting animations will fight against the running animations. When you stop moving and then start to move while firing, you'll notice that the character finishes the current shot animation and then "snaps" out of his current position to move, like his feet are covered in glue or something. You can easily notice this by watching how much faster he shoots when standing still compared to shooting on the move. Combine this with the fact that these animations also fight against the camera panning controls (which are superior to the locking system and basically a requirement if you want to land your shots on moving enemies), and you have a really annoying problem.

It's even worse when you walk backwards while firing - Volnutt will stop firing altogether to run towards the camera, and will only continue to shoot when you actually stop, because Capcom programmers forgot to make an animation where he runs while shooting behind him. I absolutely loved the game and have no issue with tank controls whatsoever, but this is the one glaring issue about MML that I remember to this day. Megaman games that came immediately before it are smooth as butter.
