=====NEWS======
-A week ago we got the chance to see Doom being played and showcased at its best by two members of the community (DevastatioN and Jkist3) in the Grand Finals of a tournament that took place at Quakecon
YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS THIS SHIT, I'M SERIOUS! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcSj0lk-vEo

-OH SHIT BRUTAL DOOM v19 HYPE...Well, not actually. Mark released a quick&final pk3 test two days before the release date, but some bugs were found (i.e. not being able to play it in Ultimate Doom and crashing the whole game) so he decided to fix them and delay the project.

-The Adventures of Square (WIP) is a new project by Jimmy (Jenesis' creator and well known Doom musician), three levels full of goofyness, cartoony art and geometry http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?p=583846

-The *allegedly* Doom 64 WR got shattered in the past Summer Games Done Quick marathon, if you missed it click here http://pastebin.com/TbxiU6UK (starts at five minutes in)

-OBLIGE v5 (WIP) "leaked", feel free to ask in the thread for a link

-Project MSX Beta 2 released (GZDoom's next big thang. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7s8oGz0TUHY for more details)

-Cyberrunner (WIP) has been announced; we had the opportunity to give it a try and help with alpha testing, for more info. check this link http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?p=693216

So tried out Doomnukems Accessories to Murder. Gotta say, really like his spritework and weapon feel a lot more than Mark's Brutal Doom stuff. Really wish Accesories to murder still had that suppressed pistol from Advanced Brutal Doom though. That thing is so much fucking fun.

I just wish it had the suppressed pistol from AdvBrutal, that thing is so much fun. Just incredibly satisfying to use. The only problem I have (Aside from the lack of suppressed pistol) is that you hold the pistol and revolver left hand, which is really nitpicky, but it looks weird to me as a righty, AND he holds all his other guns right handed, so like wtf.

Well, the handedness thing is standard for Doom, even in vanilla.

My gripes are pretty minimal. I didn't like him switching up the shotguns the way he did. It just seems silly to me that a bunch of UAC security guys are running around with double barrel shotguns.

I also, just flat out don't like what they did with doomguy's voice. Changing that was really a matter of changing shit just to change shit, and it wound up sounding kind of dumb.

>> No.988296

Oh yeah I know it's like that in vanilla, just being OCD about it is all.

And yeah, what's up with the shotgun thing? It makes no sense for the UAC to have double barrels, I mean, they're space marines, not quail hunters or whatever.

The voice thing doesn't really bother me though, not noticeable enough, at least for me.

Personally, I'd have made the basic shotgun an inaccurate semi-auto with 5 rounds, the super shotgun an accurate pump with 8.

As for the mag thing: it's a pain to code carrying partially filled magazines around (the only game I've seen do it was Rainbow Six 3) and I personally think it's sillier to be constantly reloading from a pool of ammunition.

988996

Wow, I had no idea that: a) this was a thing, and b) that it was this big. Not the Quakecon dedicated event, but Doom duels in general; I was always under the assumption that it's just a couple of guys occasionally being silly with a new functionality added to the game in recent years. It was really interesting hearing the crowed cheer and seeing how hectic the duels were.

Then again, how sophisticated can this competitive gameplay get? Doom has no vertical aiming, hard aim-assist, and really overpowered guns (SSG and BFG); where do skill or tactics come into play here, compared to games like Quake? There are no movement mechanics (to my knowledge), no item respawn to time, and you move so fast you can evade most shots. I mostly see spawn frags and some map control and enemy prediction. I'm not trying to be disrespectful, but I'd be happy if someone could tell me what makes this complex enough to be considered competitive, (well-deserved) nostalgia aside.

Also is it still actually played? If I try, will I find someone to play with without planning it days in advance? Captcha: Submit resiBro.

It's not so much carrying partially filled mags, it's that if I fire a single bullet, and reload, I lose 19 bullets. They're gone. Any other game the bullets from that half spent magazine would just kinda be added back to your ammo.
In Accessories to Murder, the ammo on the HUD is [Bullets in Magazine]/[Remaining Magazines]. So if I have 5 magazines, I fire a single bullet, and then reload, I'll have 4 magazines, but I should still have 5, with the last one being the "Leftover" ammo so to speak, the one with 19 rounds I just reloaded, but no, I lose those 19 rounds entirely, so I have to make sure to fire off the whole mag before reloading.

I hate one-way drops and doors that aren't obvious. It's fine if you get locked in an arena to constrain a certain battle, but that feeling of "whoops, you shouldn't have saved that armor, you can't go back and get it now" is really annoying. Everyone went to sleep in this thread.
So I'm currently working on an almost finished map that used only Doom 2 resources. After looking through some Doom 1 levels, I realized that not all of the textures from the first game stayed in the second. I added the DOOM.wad into my resources to use some of the textures from the first game on my map such as the SP_DUDE6 texture (baron of hell nailed to a marble wall,) but I have a few concerns.
1: The sky went from Doom 2's hellish sky to Doom 1's more mountainous hell sky, is there a way to revert this?
2: Will there be any issues with people playing the map when I get to uploading it? E.g. missing textures & the likes.
Or does one of the other Doom game's resources have the textures from the first two games & them some, like TNT/Plutonia? If so, would I have to retexture the whole map? Thanks in advance.

Harder, but not in a good way. If you're good at Doom, you can almost entirely avoid damage. No matter how good you are at Brutal Doom, there's things you just can't do. You can't point-blank the Cyberdemon with a BFG shot, because if the splash damage from the projectile doesn't kill you, the Cyberdemon's unavoidable melee stomp will. Many enemy and player weapons now have splash damage where they didn't in vanilla, so it's actually impossible to avoid damage in a lot of situations. Facing a horde of imps with nothing but a plasma rifle and 300 cells? You can either run out of ammo using that shitty flamethrower altfire that was added in the latest 1.9 test, or you can kill yourself with the splash damage from the primary fire projectiles. While the rocket launcher has increased an increased splash radius, it actually has decreased splash damage, making it harder to avoid getting hurt by your own rockets but also making it possible to point-blank someone with a rocket and live. Overall, I think the best way to describe it would be "messy". It's not a mod with a particularly high skill ceiling. Your chances of making it through a level unscratched are slim to none, no matter how much practice you have at the level.

1.28

- Fixed a bug with the Snake Imp
- Made Snake Imp's damage mostly poison.
- Made Cacolich deflate on death slightly, making its corpse less insanely tall (But not in Zandronum, guess why? Because it's shit)
- Added Phase Demon, New spectre! Decorate done pretty much from scratch. Also with GLDEFS!
- - The Phase Demon is capable of performing a short range teleport to close distance with the player, and to teleport away when it takes damage.
- Added Phantasm, New Lost Soul! Slightly less beefy than the others, but explodes for medium damage on death.

Finally finished Doom. It's kind of a low-effort game, really. There's no characters and next to no plot; the levels are abstract and never get any more interesting than "find key, use key on door", nor is there any attempt at coherence or consistency across levels; even the engine is primitive. All it has going for it is shooting a lot of demons in the face.

While other developers were experimenting with actual storylines and characters, sophisticated rendering engines, gameplay elements more complex - and interesting - than pure shooting, and levels that actually resemble places, Id decided to reprise a design document that was basically "there is a player, there is an exit, there are a shitload of monsters between the player and the exit, repeat 24 times".

The fact that it was wildly successful and is still fun today does not change the fact that it's a remarkably lazy design. They just implemented it really well.

Cheap traps, huh? I feel your pain, man.

I feel like I've played a few too many Doom levels where doing ANYTHING (take key, push switch, walk into new room) results in a dozen monster closets opening. Almost always behind you.

My favorite trap is the one where they drop a baron in your face out of nowhere or trap you in a bathroom-sized area with one. Sure is fun, especially with their melee damage boost in BD.

that's a shame that you think that kind of thing is cheap. but there is little alternative. if all the monsters in the level are already there when you enter the room, the entire game becomes stand in the doorway and use it as a chokepoint until everything is dead, explore empty room, repeat.

>> No.995640

perhaps you would prefer that the key is removed (such as bars appearing to block your way to it) as you approach, monsters appear, you fight them, you find a way to open the bars, take the key as a prize. but i don't really see the difference between the player getting the key before the fight, or after it.

>> No.995645

A little bit of fair play is all I'm asking. Sending in more monsters is fine, warping them in your face where it's impossible to avoid damage is not. Also, if everything results in more enemies warping in, gameplay gets tedious fast, as evidenced by Doom 3.

I also think it's possible to design the levels so that it's not possible to just funnel the poor bastards into one doorway.

>> No.995651

I know that buttons and keycards are almost always trapped.

But the pic on my earlier post is from an awful room from map 15 of that wad. There were 2 archviles trapped in small cages and when you enter further into the room to shoot the other one, behind you opens a wall and 20 revenants appear. Then there's 8 pillars and they slide down to reveal 8 more revenants. Only way out of the room on that point are some stairs filled with sergeants and they lead to a room with 2 archviles and cacodemons. I'd rather have more tiny rooms and barons any day.

Damage in Advanced Brutal Doom is reduced from regular Brutal Doom, so it feels like you're still playing Doom and not a cover-based shooter.

Advanced Brutal Doom's fatalities are also sped up, so you don't feel like you're watching a cutscene every time you do one. A couple of them are still too long, like the Pain Elemental one, but for the most part, they're bearable now.

You're right, though, the quad barrel shotty is probably a step too far.

Back To Saturn X uses an almost entirely new textureset, but it's still Doom-ish techbases.

Epic 2 is primarily Egyptian-themed, with some space maps in between to keep things fresh.

Lost Episode is ridiculously abstract, even for Doom mapping. Some people love it, others hate it. There doesn't seem to be much of a middle ground.

If you're looking for ways to shake up the gameplay, try Hideous Destructor, Crossfire, or Project MSX for a bit more of a tactical, "modern" experience. If RPG elements are more your thing, try Wrath of Cronos, Psychic, or PokeDoom. If you're looking for something with a more consistent theme, Wildweasel's Nazis, Terrorists, or Diaz mods are all worth a shot.

Is Lost Episode the one that starts out in that weird space map with invisible floors? I never got too far in that, but I didn't HATE it. I'll have to give it another try.

I've never heard of the rest of those, so thanks a million; I know what I'm doing tonight. What do you mean by RPG elements? I'm not much of a role player, but I can dig leveling and equipment stats, etc. in a fast-paced game like Doom. However "A wild Imp approaches! ATTACK>SHOTGUN. -50HP. Imp dies." would be a different story.

On that note, are there any proper single player maps for MM8BDM? I live in Butt Fucked Egypt with satellite internet and can't play anything online. I loved MM8BDM the few times I played online, but I really wished the single player mode wasn't just death matches against bots.

Yeah.
>What do you mean by RPG elements?
Well, Wrath of Cronos has experience and level ups and stats and all that stuff. Psychic has weapons and spells that can be purchased and upgraded using money found in lieu of ammo and by killing monsters. PokeDoom is essentially Pokemon in Doom, except real-time and with slightly less control over what your monsters do.

To be honest, if the fps game is trying to be semi-realistic (like CoD) then this wouldn't fit the game at all, but something more, for a lack of a better word, fantasy like would be fine using a map like this. This kind of map design could maybe fit into something more out there like Halo, or maybe even Half-Life. It just needs to merge with the actual game well. Also;
>No modern game will ever have monster closets

also in many versions the player's movement speed was significantly reduced.

fast monsters that fire superspeed projectiles almost constantly when you're in view, plus low movement speed means you can't dodge, so you have to attack from cover.

this is especially the case for maps with tons of hitscanners...

Are there any practical reasons to use a shootable switch as apposed to a regular switch? The only situation I can think of to use one is having a gap of some kind between the player & the switch.

>> No.997241

>>997235

Very few people use shootable switch nowadays, which is kinda sad, since they just stick with a single way to do things and they don't fully explore all the possibilities of mapping in Doom.

That being said, shootable switchs are almost used always in secret areas.

>> No.997243

>>997235
pretty much. if the player can just run straight up to the switch there's no point in not making it pressable.

shootables are a good way to hide a button to open a secret area, consider MM2 map01 which has a button you press but if you stand back and shoot it it will open a secret area.

the other case where you use a shootable switch is to force the player to make a noise to wake monsters up. this is often used to make sure the monsters in a teleporter trap are awake when the trap goes off. SF2012 map14 starts out this way, as do many of gggmork's maps.

Ok /vr/ I need your help.

I'm trying to set up a co-op playthrough of DOOM Ultimate with Brutal DOOM v18 using Doomseeker.
I got the server up and there's just one problem: I can't get the brutaldoom mod to work; it always launches regular DOOM...

I load Skulltag_actors.pk3, then Skulltag_data.pk3 and then brutaldoomv18a.pk3 in that order but it refuses to actually play the game in Brutal DOOM, I just get the good old regular version.

Now I know you're all about to get mad at me for wanting to play brutal DOOM and not the original but my friend has only ever played FPS games like CoD and the like, so I'm hoping to show him awesome stuff like the Quakes and DOOM and figured brutal DOOM would be a good starting point for the "conversion".

tl;dr: Using Doomseeker, can get server running and playing DOOM but can't get the brutal DOOM mod to work - wat do?

I don't know who the hell those people are but Brutal Doom is bullshit. If you're going to try and modernize a game, don't do it in the worst fucking possible ways. ADS? Unnecessary. More emphasis on gore? Juvenile. Audible bleeding out noise? Obnoxious. Fatalities? What the fuck was wrong with just fucking SHOOTING a guy?

Why couldn't this just be a graphical update WITHOUT the bullshit mechanics that break the game?

I mean, I know there are people out there that are into it, but why? Really; it's fucking Doom. We don't need any of the added bullshit like ADS or fatalities for a fucking run-and-gun shooter. Adding things like that just slow down the game, which is NOT how the game is designed.

Trash like Brutal Doom and Call of Doom are everything that is wrong with the current Doom mod scene at the moment; shitty mods made by newcomers who aren't actually Doom fans and simply seek to make the game as unlike Doom as possible.

It's cool, I just checked the zDoom forum thread and nothing has been posted yet. Also, it scares me how people keep posting bugs after bugs right after the announcement, at this point BDv19 might be delayed until September

Not that I care for BD, I mean, there's a fuckton of gameplay mods out there to play with, and of course I'm not taking into account the unmatched experience of vanilla gameplay.

Seriously, how many of you have taken the time to realize how fucking much has been done for Doom for the past couple of decades? Is there any other game with such a big catalogue of user-made content?

Hey guys I know it's not Doom, but because it's still arena FPS, I wanted to post it here, because I don't want to waste space with a topic for it.

I got into Tribes: Ascend and really enjoyed skiing in it. I want to get into Tribes 2 because of how well liked it is for the majority of Tribes players; however, I just can't get used to how skiing works in Tribes 2, just because of how it's more hopping than sliding.

Can anyone help me try to understand or get used to this?
