Nobody on my school even had any handheld console, and I, the absolute mad lad, went with my Game Gear and pulled it out during break. I couldn't even play it, all the kids flocked around me, wanting to see it. I had to be careful because some of them wanted to take it out of my hands, too. I never went with it again except for one swimming class where I went but couldn't swim because I was sick or something, so I stood out of the pool playing Sonic Chaos. Got to the final boss but the battery died, lol (lmao even)

oddly i dont ever recall encountering a handheld at school either. you would think kids would pull them out on the bus or whatnot. maybe i just dont remember. i had an og gameboy and game gear but i typically only played the game gear at home with the ac adapter.

>> No.9860362

When I was 8 - 9 years old, the original GameBoy was pretty popular with kids in my school. A lot of kids had them, and some would trade GB game carts with each other. They were relatively cheap systems with low battery requirements. Games were like $29.99 on average. I did get a Game Gear as a Christmas present, and I loved that thing. It was a portable Master System with more colours. System came bundled with Columns and Sonic 1,. Would take it on trips with me, and the worst offender of this machine were was the horrible battery life. This was at a time when rechargeable batteries sucked. It was expensive to burn through a 6-pack of Eveready batteries. Even taking to it school, I would let other kids use it. But they were always disappointing by the battery life. I had to get a AC adapter just to use it. I hear the later models did have better battery life. But I had one from 1992 (I think?),. I wasn't the only kid I knew with a GameGear. This thing ate through six doubkle AA's like nothing. Also, my favorite handheld system, was my iPhone touch. No lie. But that is not retro.

I should fix all my Game Gears and sell them. I'm not a huge fan of the system. I might keep a blue one though. It's pretty cool to look at. And Its Genie is pretty neat. Some of the games are pretty cool to look at. Like the Xmen games. I don't know. I like looking at the system and its games more than the idea of playing it.

I remember the schools in my district were pretty strict with their ban on game systems. Could not have them on your person before school, after school, recess, holiday parties, and even on the bus. I thought the GameGear had a pretty solid line up of games, for what it was. For a short period of time, you would find quite a few simultaneous releases with the GameBoy when it came to third parties. But, I think most of Nintendo's higher profile first party releases were generally better than most of Sega's first party offerings. A lot more original software on the Nintendo side, while Sega delivered a lot more SMS to GG cross ports and demakes of 16bit Genesis and MD games with less original GG games. Sega did discontinue the GG in 1996 or 1997? But Majesco picked up the manufacturing rights and released their own version for a few years. Nintendo kept that GameBoy alive through the early 2000's with the Lite and GBC. Pokemon drove sales.

NEC and Sega were both retarded to not just market this and the Nomad as handhelds once the TG16 flopped and Genesis was old gen. Like just say they are competitors to the Lynx/gameboy/ngp and not portable home consoles. Both blew away the visuals of other handhelds of their eras, NEC could have just cut their loses with the TurboDuo, go all in on bringing more pc engine software over and claiming them as "original software" for the Express. Likewise if Sega of america wanted to keep the genesis alive when saturn was out, do it through the nomad.

I brought my Turbo Express to school to show off once and literally nobody cared, lol.
Despite the games being demonstrably good and funny to play, without Sonic or Mario, there simply wasn't any interest.
I brought my GG in once, too, and one friend said the Sonic game i had was like a Payless rip off.

I completely forgot about that! I used to turn it on with no game in there for that same purpose, mostly to sneak around the house at night without turning the lights on. My bedroom was upstairs on the opposite end of the house from the TV room so it was quite a treck in the dark to get there to watch TV while everyone else was asleep.
I'd sneak out of bed, grab the GG or Turbo Express and slowly make my there to do so. Down the hall. Down the stairs. Through the whatever you call that small hallway beneath the staircase between the foyer and the living room then hang a left and continue through the breakfast and dining rooms and past the kitchen, onward to the TV room, sometimes stopping in the kitchen if i knew there was something nice i could eat without utensils or dishes.
Grew to love old black and white TV shows and films watching Nick at Nite and movies on Disney.

The one kid I knew that had one came to school with a few games, the AC adapter and the TV tuner. He would set himself up and we would go over to see what midday movies were on at lunch.

There was simply no point wasting money on batteries with this thing.

I still remember the excitement when we tuned in to catch a movie with sex scenes. That's life as an 8 year old, I unironically miss it.

I had the Atari Lynx at this time and as good as it was I felt the games and the TV made the game gear more desirable.

I was most impressed by the Lynx, out of all the handhelds. The Turbo Express was a portable TG-16/PCE, which was impressive enough. I remember seeing commercials for Lynx games on TV and in screenshots in gaming mags, and being impressed by its scaling sprites.

That's what I thought. As someone who had an early model GameGear's, they were terrible on battery life. I liked the first few Sonic games for the GameGear. Liked the Streets of Rage 2 downport. I think the handheld had a good version of BattleToads. Ristar is actually a good port. I also like Dynamite Heady port. I remember liking Ecco II: Tides of Time. Shinobi GG games are good. I like the Power rangers GG games. the system has a lot of licensed games, 8-bit versions of 16bit games, games that were either ported from the Master System, or GG games that were ported to the SMS. there's not a whole lot of original GameGear games.

IDK, it seemed like two packs of 4AA's could last a lot longer than 12AA batteries and a GameGear. The GameBoy Color with only two AAA batteries, was a really big upgrade. I never had an original GameBoy. But I had the Super GameBoy for the SNES. I bought a GBC for less than $70 dollars, and I was impressed by it only requiring two AAA batteries that could last for 15-20 hours. My old GameGear was like 5-6 hours with new batteries. No wonder why I learned to complete Sonic 1 in one sitting.
