Sadly I only had one for a brief period in 1998 (borrowed it from my cousin, only had a sampler with bug 2, mr. bones, something else, and a full copy of virtua cop.) I played virtua cop 90% of the time and enjoyed it. I ended up buying the console in 2016 for $50 with 2 controllers and while I still enjoy Virtua Cop a ton, I can't really reminisce on it because I played so little on it until 2016 where I started playing a ton and discovered some new favorites. So my reminiscing is more like miniscing because it's a very recent thing. It's purely active enjoyment of it as it exists to me today, with the only game I have strong nostalgia for being Virtua Cop, and maybe the noises the main menu makes.

Aside from magazine ads I only ever saw the thing once in person and never even got to play it until I got mine about 9 years ago, which always gave it a sort of mystique appeal to me. Nobody ever talked about it. There was a point where I thought Sega just straight up stopped making consoles until I saw a Dreamcast kiosk running Sonic Adventure. I like it, but with what I know now, I can only imagine how much it must've sucked to own only a Saturn while the Playstation and even the 64 got so many awesome games. The thing just fell apart and quietly faded away in the US after a couple of years.

Nights Into Dreams
Sonic R
Virtual-On
Pandemonium
Mega Man X4

Magic Knight Rayearth

In my experience it doesn't really excel in any particular area. Maybe Japanese puzzlers or fighting games? I ended up preferring SEGA CD and Turbo CD (and yes PS1) for shmups and platformers. Admittedly have not tried many of the sports games on it yet. It's not a terrible console but its overall quality and "cool factor" are kind of hilariously overstated

The Saturn and PC port got a major graphical upgrade and a different soundtrack, Saturn version in particular is known to have the best special stages. I grew up with the Genesis version though, it has a fantastic soundtrack too, and thankfully no load times.

Apart from the fact the mascot game of the Saturn is called Nights into Dreams (which seems to perfectly fit the console somehow), the whole Saturn mystique has an oniric quality to it.
What makes me think this is that I remember one day, this was 2002 or 2003, I was just sorting out stuff at my placard and found a bag and looked inside and it was my old Saturn I actually totally forgot I even had it. Finding it again felt a bit surreal, and the best thing is that it worked fine like, whatever many years its been stored (and I went through movings, so there was movement), the Saturn remained pristine.
I remember the day I got my Saturn, I remember the days I spent playing it, but in a way, when you're in a dream, certain things also seem real.
In a way I feel like the Saturn was a dream that manifested itself in reality.

>In my experience it doesn't really excel in any particular area.
2D games in general, it was the best 2D system of the 5th generation. Fighters and shmups are its famous forte. It also had a lot of quality RPGs, so in a way, it has actually more variety than the more successful (worldwide) Mega Drive. Not to mention it also has actual good 3D games like VF2 or Panzer Dragoon II.
Platformers in general weren't a big part of 5th gen anyway. The most famous 5th gen sidescroller isn't even a real platformer, as it's more of a side-scroller ARPG (I'm talking about SOTN), and the possibly actual best sidescroller platformer of the generation might be Goemon's Great Adventure, unexpectedly on a console mainly known for 3D games (well, GGA is a 3D game, but with 2D gameplay). But in general, 5th gen was really dry on sidescroll platforming, compared to 3rd and 4th gen.

>2D games in general

>no Gunstar Heroes or Dynamite Headdy
>no Ristar, Alex Kidd, or Monster World
>but look at these generic arcade ports
It has a lot of 2D games -in general-, but again, in my experience most of them are not exactly amazing. Genesis, SNES, TurboGrafx, PS1, and even GBA had an arguably better lineup of 2D games than Saturn. And all of them had shmups and fighting games, too - arguably higher quality and more stylish ones like Lords of Thunder and Einhander. This is why so many Genesis fans were disappointed with the Saturn to begin with
>Platformers in general weren't a big part of 5th gen anyway.
I can't speak for everyone but when I think 5th gen I immediately think of Banjo, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, and Mario. The closest thing Saturn had was NiGHTS, which while charming, kind of pales in comparison to the others. Plus it's only one game, while Banjo gets two and Crash and Spyro got three. To say nothing of the wide array of other platformers during that gen like DK64, Ape Escape, Rapid Reload, Pac-Man World, Jumping Flash, Klonoa, Conker, Mischief Makers, Glover, the two other Gex games, and countless others that the Saturn didn't have. Instead we got winners like Ninpen Manmaru in which its biggest challenge is being able to turn around.

Well the question is, does the Saturn excel in any particular area? Yes it does, it excels at 2D, Saturn did have the 2D advantage, even if you consider fighting games and shmups as "generic" ports, they're still part of the Saturn's legacy.
Also when I said "platformers in general" I meant side-scrollers, not 3D ones.

What I'm saying is just having 2D games isn't really a strength. The Genesis and SNES have 2D games, but their strengths are both different. For Genesis it's mainly shmups, beat 'em ups, and a few mascot platformers. For SNES it's primarily mascot platformers but also puzzlers and action adventure/RPG's. I'll give Saturn fighting games since it has the actual six button controller and Capcom games are generally better on it for various reasons, but I still think the shmup selection is just okay compared to other consoles. 2D games are something every system should have anyway, and at that point it's only really better than the N64.
>Thunder Force V doesn't count?
Not sure why you mentioned this as it's on PlayStation and in English
>I've never met anyone that liked the PC Engine library but not the Saturn's.
I don't hate the Saturn, I just feel like it gets brownie points for stuff like compilations, literal demos (aka Christmas NiGHTS), and having 2D games.
>The Saturn had its own selection of original 2D titles but it is a shame those games didn't make much of a reappearance. There's always the hundreds of Genesis collection games.
This always makes me laugh because even if SEGA and third parties did rerelease them, people would not buy them. People didn't buy them the first time and a lot of them are already available like Guardian Heroes and Radiant Silvergun on Xbox, NiGHTS on Steam, or Cotton on Switch. Saturn games are notoriously harder to emulate, even moreso than Dreamcast games, so they would have to either make native ports which takes way more time and effort or do what Success did with the Cotton port and hope that it doesn't have the same issues. I think this is what OP meant when he said please be realistic when reminiscing about Saturn.

Shilling is a meme word, I don’t think sega has paid employees here trying to drum up support for the saturn mini, but it definitely gets pumped above the quality of the library imo. For example I feel like the RPGs are mediocre to bad on it *in the aggregate* compared to other consoles (let it be known the nogames64 doesn’t even register on my radar for most of these considerations)

Yeah, the Saturn is easily better than the N64, but a lot of its games are just okay compared to other platforms. I think a lot of people treat it as some obscure gem console despite selling more units than SEGA CD and Dreamcast, which actually do have some obscure gems on them. It's still a cool console but I feel like a lot of the hype comes more from the aesthetic and weird marketing campaigns than the games themselves.

>> No.9860195

>>9860159
Yes, and I think the Saturn stands alone in the aesthetic department, which is part of the allure for me personally. I also think the range of games on it from a visual and gameplay point of view has to be one of the widest for any console, probably due to the complex architecture. Early to late PS3 comes to mind for this as well, but man I see some saturn games and think this looks like utter dog shit, and other games I'm somewhat blown away considering the time it came out. I do think they were ahead of their time on the hardware, the problem is people just weren't anywhere near as comfortable with parallel processing then as they are now.

Is it wrong to say the PlayStation and the Saturn both had good 2D games? Thunder Force V was an example of a game that runs better on Saturn, just as an example to contrast titles that run better on PlayStation. Consoles will have their strengths and weaknesses demonstrated in their respective libraries, this is a good thing if you're not tied to archaic brand identity
>I just feel like it gets brownie points for stuff like compilations, literal demos (aka Christmas NiGHTS), and having 2D games.
This isn't a mark for or against either system but the PlayStation is also known for its demos and compilations, I differ on the PlayStation being known for 2D however. Pic related.
>even if SEGA and third parties did rerelease them, people would not buy them
Why are they making them if nobody is buying them? Some even got greatest hits/players choice/etc reprints so claiming nobody bought them is apparent hyperbole

Fact of the matter is most on here who shit on the saturn generally do not like arcade games. If you liked arcade games the Saturn very clearly shits all over the N64 at least. and one could argue if you were huge into Sega arcade games at the time, Saturn was the best way to get those AM2 and AM3 games at home. The Saturn, like the Dreamcast is a sad story of a potentially great system doomed by mismanagement and squandered potential.

I didn't have one growing up, I had a PS1. My cousin had one, though. I'd play Daytona USA and Virtua Fighter 2 all the time at his house. Years later I bought it off him and that's still the Saturn I own.
