I'd contend it isn't impossible, but you'd need to change the mechanics (I'd say including an inventory system to limit the amount of weapons and ammo you could carry), changing the health system up a bit (mainly just making health packs rarer, though able to carried in the inventory until later, though a bleeding system could be a good addition) and making armor much rarer. From there, I think you'd want to swap out the bestiary quite a bit, and improve AI all the way around (for instance, if you want to include zombies, make them act a bit more like reanimated corpses that want to eat you alive). From there, it's just a matter of atmosphere and pacing.

Give me songs that might be similar to the style that the original Doom MIDIs follow, and/or songs that you feel they might fit in Doom perfectly

What I normally do is, I go to ultimate guitar and look for a Guitar Pro tab of that song and then I use TuxGuitar to export the song as a MIDI and then I'll post the result.

I liked Neodoom, lots of weapons, enemies and big maps, but i recommend getting the extra file that removes the invincible hooker enemy, i don't know why its in there anyways. And Omgwpns was also good especially mixed with mock2. Zharkov was an interesting mod. Anyone used Skulltag? its got a server browser and runs a bit like Zdoom. Also Freedoom is worth a look. One trick i do is have all the wads in separate folder and click drag to the shortcut to run them.

I'm a bit new to Doom Builder & the likes, but I'm doing well so far. I've made two maps, finishing up a third. I'm currently working on a five level .wad & realized something earlier. When I open up a .wad like DOOM.wad, all the maps are shown, but I have the first two levels of my "practice" .wad saved as individual .wads. They have proper map names (MAP22, MAP24,) but how do I make new maps within an existing .wad, & would I be able to simply save the second map under the first map's .wad? Or would I need to do some copy/pasting work? Hope that came through clear enough.

brass ejects to the side, not behind at the person. No matter which hand your dominant one is, if the gun is ahead of you brass won't hit you. AR's are the only real brass issue you'd have as a leftie and it depends on the individual gun and how it throws the brass. But for the most part it's supposedly not much of a problem, some guns do include a brass deflector to stop from shooting backwards. Doomguy doesn't even have an AR. The only brass coming from him are a pistol he should be holding in front of his line of sight, a shotgun which ejects out as he pumps or pops it and a chaingun which he would hold lower anyway.

The code changes on map startup, you have to go through that little choose-the-right colour sequence to get the code.

The sequence sucks, but there's a panel on the wall beforehand that shows you the right colours to choose so you can just save your game there as close to the panel as possible and then look at the preview pic whilst going through the area.

I would be interested to know more about this. As far as I know, Doom's AI simply isn't up to the task. The only thing that makes noise is the player's weapon (and all at the same volume) and there is only 1 alert state. This "ghost player" idea sounds pretty interesting if there's way to get monsters to investigate something that's not your position.

and to get monsters to investigate the dummy/ghost, i guess it can be done by making it "noisy" somehow

try making a (silent) weapon that will summon a (silent) scarecrow and make it noisy with the alt fire
then you can just study how the monsters react (and i'm sure it can be used in your mod)

or just an empty can that makes noise when it hits something instead of when you throw it

i might be saying a load of BS as i don't know how detection works in detail, but you can still give it a shot.

Ok, so I asked before if I should make a stealth mod, and heres an "example" (It was made within 2 hours, very quick).

You can sneak up from behind, break zomibes necks, throw smokegrenades and use a mirror to look behind corners.

As I already mentioned, this is just the "idea" of the mod, I wont continue working on it. I need better sprites, a better code (this was written in 30 minutes...), and sounds.

I'm playing gzdoom with a wired Xbox controller, and no matter how much I mess with the control settings, I can't seem to get my character to move at variable speeds.

I'm no soldier either, but I'm qualified in using firearms for work.

There are different types of reloading protocols. If im inna firefight and run out of ammo, I'm trained to chuck the empty mag onto the ground, quickly grab a new mag, reload, neutralise the threat, and then recover my discarded mag after anything that could kill me is on its ass.

If I get into a firefight, and neutralise one threat with say, 75% of my mag, I'm trained to check my area, remove my mag, place it in a seperate location from my "good" mags (i.e. put the half empty mag in my pocket instead of my mag pouch) and then reload, and check the area for further threats.

Personally, I would never ever ever want to be in a situation where I have to use half empty mag. For one, shit in a gunfight is quick...fractions of seconds quick. We're drilled to put half empty mags and totally empty mags in the same place (pockets, etc...anywhere that isn't a mag pouch) so using them in a situation where you haven't had a minute or so to reload your mags would be risky -- you could reach into your pocket and grab an empty!
Would I use a half empty if needed? yeah, totally...but no way I've seen reloading/ammo management in any game has ever been "realistic", simply because reloading is a lot more involved IRL.

when I make wads, I simply make manual reloading a no-go.
