It wasn't, you've never actually seen the character in the game itself, only the 10 years of fanart.
In reality, the Gen 6 design is not any more or less sexualized in any appreciable manner, even Gen 1 Misty was more sexualized, they outright depicted her nude on official merchandise, while Nintendo and Gamefreak barely acknowledged the popularity of Gen 6 Hex Maniac's design at all until pretty recently.

They put the Gen 6 one in ORAS, instead of recreating the Gen 3 one, but knowing Gamefreak, the primary motivation for this was that it means doing less work.

Yeah, while Gen 1 mechanics aren't the most polished, I think a lot of people miss that a lot of it is based off risk/reward strategy. STAB is a bonus, not a right. You have to strategize about using TMs or letting Pokemon take a fall to take down a strong Pokemon
Is it totally fucked in terms of balance because someone can just have a 6 Alakazam team, or just trade to load up Pokemon with strong moves? absolutely. But I get what they were thinking.

You have to keep in mind that when Gen 2 was made, the concept of generations didn't exist yet so GSC was just "Pokemon 2" more than anything. But I think the fact that they look like mascots is a major reason why Pokemon became a hit in the first place. Pokemon look nice, plus it's paired with the idea that it's a collecting/pet adventure game. It appeals to both boys and girls because there's a variety in the creatures. I think the art and design really was the thing holding it all together, to tell you the truth. Pokemon was leagues ahead of its closest comparison Dragon Quest at monster designs.

Hell the strategy guides of that era outright censored some of the more rarer Gen 2 pokemon and simply gave a ??? symbol or went "There are other pokemon here we can't list".

As a side effect though it led to some of the Gen 2 pokemon to be completely forgotten, like I ran into people who up to Gen 4 didn't know about Misdrevious.

I'll justify that. For one, I wouldn't say it has an awful level curve, it's just that compared to gen 1 where you can do Gyms 3-6 in any order you want as long as you have Cut, Gen 2 has a very clear progression path. Add onto that the fact that the E4 is only level 50 so there aren't really any power spikes until you reach Kanto, and if you've been fighting every trainer you meet that should be a non-issue.
As for poor distribution, I will chalk that up to the fact that a lot of them were evolutions or baby forms to gen 1 pokemon so you had to obtain the originals first. Yeah, there's some fucking wierd ones (I have to wait until this one square in Kanto at night to get a Houndour, the only Dark-type worth a damn in Gen 2? Why?), you still obtained almost all of them in Johto itself. Like look at the list
https://www.serebii.net/pokemon/gen2pokemon.shtml
There's only a few you won't see in Johto, not counting trade evolutions

>> No.9863184

>>9863124
For reference, here is every Gen 2 pokemon you can't catch in Johto in any version of the game, not counting the evolution of a Gen 1/2 pokemon you catch earlier and level up
>Politoed
>Slowking
>Scizor
>Steelix
>Kingdra
>Sneasel
>Houndour
>Slugma
>Misdreavus
>Murkrow
>Blissey
>Porygon 2
That's it, unless I missed one. What do the first 5 have in common? They're all trade evolutions, holding that against Gen 2 is like being upset that Gen 1 won't let you obtain an Alakazam vs leveling.

Most complaints about the level curve seem to be later game pokemon being far too underleveled, and weird shit like Kanto having trainers in the 20's-40's with wild pokemon as low as level 3 in the same area.

True but by that point nothing can challenge you except the gyms so I assume they did it as a way to level up your weaker pokemon.

The problem is that it doesn't really feel organic, it just feels like they kept the levels of wild pokemon about the same from RBY for continuity.

All I know is, R/B/Y is a very breezy playthrough....smooth, your Pokemon are always the right level if you've been actually fighting and not being lazy, they end up fully evolved by the endgame if you weren't lazy, and the game has a pretty nice layout of mons you can get before the latter half of the game giving you decent options for every type, I never had a struggle trying to figure out my team in those games, it all just works out well.

G/S/C, the opposite is true I find for all these things. Not to mention, the day/night system only makes things more complicated, it was a cool feature playing as a kid but for replays, it really puts a damper on the replayability.

Gen 1 might have a lot of technical flaws but most of them only effect competitive play, not the single mode adventure in any significant way, thus it's not a problem for most people.

A true child of the era just levelled their starter and overpowered their problems by having 15 levels on the enemy

>> No.9863807

I have it in my mind that I can't just replay the first 2 gens because they'd be too easy, so I tried to do a mono type run without over leveling past the gym leader's ace, but really the games barely work well with that and some types aren't even possible.

Would a randomizer help make the first 2 gens more replayable?

You can just replay them normally for the sake of nostalgia, not everything has to be a challenge. If it was then Kirby games wouldn't exist.

Try Pokemon Crystal Clear. It's not a randomizer but it changes how you play Crystal as a result.

Yeah you could do that, which is why any technical problems don't really matter for the single player, the game is easy to cheese.

I never did that though as a kid, I was a Pokemon nerd who had to LARP as a real trainer in the game, had to have six favorite Pokemon and pretend I was raising them.

When I want to have an extra challenge in a Pokemon game, I up the number of Pokemon that I train.
Instead of the normal six, I'll train twelve or eighteen. You can really do any number you want though.
When you go to a Pokemon Center, you grab your lowest level Pokemon. I usually take the lowest five and my designated HM user. Then you just play normally until the next time you go to a center.
For big fights like Gym Battles or Rival Battles, you get to bring any team you want.
This method makes the game harder because your EXP is being split more ways. No matter what you do you'll always be a lower level. Unlike a lot of challenge runs, it starts out easy and gets harder as your team increases in size. It's also very easy to adjust mid-playthrough. If things are still too easy, train more Pokemon. If things are getting too tough, train less Pokemon.
The biggest advantage is that it lets you use lots and lots of Pokemon. I have a few favorites that I always end up using, so it's fun to play with all the Pokemon I think are neat but have never gotten around to training.

Alternatively, if you want a challenging Gen 1/2 experience, play Stadium.

I recently did a Yellow roleplay of Ash, and I used lesser mons of his up until I could replace them with his higher tier stuff. My final team was in the mid 40s, and it was actually properly challenging up until the end.

Just not the ones that actually needed to be fixed, like the poor level curve and Pokemon distribution. And I personally feel like even what they did fix (i.e. the restored dungeons) felt forced and went against the aesthetic. Things like Viridian Forest being wiped out and Mewtwo's cave collapsing may have been memory-saving cuts, but it also made sense to follow from Gen1's heavy urban feel and to contrast with Johto being mostly forest and old-fashioned culture.
