I'm willing to engage with the permadeath system in this game, because I find it interesting, but how am I expected to resist the temptation of intentionally sacrificing Marth to bring my dead units back to life without having to restart the entire game?

Some units in that game are only recruitable when others have passed. We call it replayability

What?

When Marth (the main character who represents you) dies, it's "game over," but all this means is having to restart from where you last saved.
This means that any units who bit the dust before Marth himself died get to come back to life, because they hadn't died yet at that point.
Knowing this, if anything goes wrong in a battle, you can intentionally get Marth killed to get those units back, which undermines the whole permadeath system, but is technically the optimal thing to do.

okay but when don't you just load your latest save instead

The only time you get to save in this game is in between maps, so your latest save (assuming you always say "yes" when asked) is always going to be at the very start of the last map you made it to.

This is one of the few times where I'd personally permit the use of save states. Any time a unit dies, you must save state. If your lord dies and you game over as a result, you must load from the save state.
Or just go full iron man and start the whole-ass game over.
Or just don't sweat it and just play the game through if it's your first time. Just don't act on your temptations to be a cheesy cheapo, Anon. Simple as.

Oh, I see what you're asking now. The reason I wouldn't simply load the file from the title screen is because that feels even more like cheating. At least if I do risky moves and get Marth killed, I can psychologically convince myself that I was actually playing the game.

That's a pretty good idea. I like the idea of doing ironman runs (and the old games in the series were likely designed with that in mind), but the game giving you a game over when the lord dies is stupid in this context. And I'm not a fan of throwing the whole run away if the main character dies, it's a bit too harsh.

Because risk analysis and risk management is a fun part of strategic thinking. If the only penalty for doing risky moves is that you have to restore the game and replay the mission, then you're not really playing the game as intended.

Considering how long the missions are, it's a pretty good penalty to have to replay them.

But apparently still a penalty you're willing to suffer through, which means the risk is lesser.

I mean either you play it legit Iron Man and take the losses you get (which means you get to play with some lesser units, which can be interesting) or you autistically reset whenever someone dies.

There's no shame in the latter, it's what most people do. You don't need to pretend you're actually doing the former.

that's funny, savestates to make the game harder

>> No.9842661

It really took reading this thread for to connect the dots as to why I haven't really gotten into any of these games that I've tried. I was constantly resetting.

Soft reset commands are built into later Fire Emblems because you're expected to simply reset and reload.

From which game? Before or after Kaga left the series?

The key thing is that you have to realize this isn't nu fire emblem. Especially in the first game, they throw units at you all throughout the game, and you're not going to get any special dialouge or ending for keeping certain units alive. They're meant to be disposable, and developer interviews have said as much. You are fully meant to churn these people through the meat grinder of war because unless you're a complete dumbass you'll never be starved of them. I remember sub-70 iq retards bitching about the remake of this game because the game throws extra units into the game if you're under a certain amount, and they saw this as "missing extra content for being too good at the game". No, you're just not meant to reload your save because oops one guy died.
