There, I'll give you ten great games: Puyo Puyo 2, Fatal Fury Special, Samurai Shodown, Sonic Chaos, Sonic Triple Trouble, Bubble Bobble, Puzzle Bobble, Dynamite Headdy, Gunstar Heroes, Shinobi II and Tempo Jr. There's even one extra title in the list, but I guess you can just see it as an honorable mention.

Here are my 10 favorites:
Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Sonic Chaos
Sonic Triple Trouble
Tails Adventure
Castle of Illusion
Land of Illusion
Legend of Illusion
Lucky Dime Caper
Deep Duck Trouble
A lot more good stuff I left out due to my bias towards mascot platformers... but still the Game Gear was an excellent handheld for its time.

This was the first game I got on the GameGear and I played the fuck out of it. When Deep Duck Trouble came out I was blown away by how much better the graphics were.

I'll also add Ecco the Dolphin to the list.

My grandfather was into tech big time. He bought the Fing laserdisc the day it launched. Anyways he would buy me and my brother stuff all the time. Portable TVs with antennas all kinds of crap. We naturally had a game gear each. My dad finally had enough and bought one of those rechargeable battery things where you put the batteries back in the charger and they charge up so we would stop wasting so much money on new batteries. Thank you for enjoying my blog.

I'm the one that made that list, and well, if you prefer to exclude titles that also got a Master System release, then it does get more difficult, as the Game Gear many times felt like a portable Master System... but I don't think that's a bad thing, afterall in both the US and Japan, markets where SEGA wanted the Game Gear to sell the most against Nintendo's Game Boy, the Master System sold poorly compared to the NES... also, when the Game Boy came out, one of the main appeals was that it was almost a portable NES, you could take your NES with you anywhere and play Nintendo's IPs, so having a handheld that's almost a portable Master System, a good console I might add, with full color and backlight on the go, was just phenomenal, even though it had its shortcomings, mostly price and batteries, still a good system that was ahead of its time.

A new screen replacement and modern rechargable AAs solves that problem. The lightbulb inside is what really drains the batteries on the game gear. Back in the day you had to tether it to the wall plug or buy a rechargable pack, it was impossible to seriously play it with just AAs

I can't help but feel that the Game Gear is a very underrated handheld. Almost every time that this gets discussed here, it's negative, always people talking about how it's got a weak library or how its batteries don't last long, and that's it... there's so much more to the Game Gear, the library features many Genesis ports, which was the main appeal of handhelds back in the day, to play what you'd play on your console, on the go, and the fact that most of its library was shared with the Master System is fine, most people in the US or Japan had an NES, so they were experiencing most of these titles for the 1st time. I'll agree thatit took too many batteries, more than the Game Boy, and didn't last as long... but this is a handheld from 1990, 1 year after the Game Boy, with color and light on its screen, which was just incredible, the Game Boy had an iconic library and its batteries lasted longer, but to me the screen made it almost unplayable, I didn't enjoy a single Game Boy until the GBA SP came out in 2002 or something, but the Game Gear, which would let you play for about 3 to 5 hours on fully charged batteries, was actually enjoyable to play on these hours because I didn't have to fight with the screen constantly, and I could play in the dark, also most handheld ports around this time didn't take longer than an hour to beat if you knew what to do, so having 3 to 5 hours worked, even though it was indeed way worse than the Game Boy in that regard. I'd say that the main flaw the Game Gear had was being ahead of it's time, it was excellent.

The greatest game gear games can’t touch average gameboy games. Then you have the likes of link’s awakening, dk94, Metroid 2, mega man series, Pokémon, sml 1/2, wario land, Kirby series, ff legends, etc… game gear never had a chance, you can put the whole gay rainbow on ur screen but if the games suck, they suck

Nah don't mind me, I was just being an asshole for no reason. I'd be interested though in common MS/GG titles in which the GG version could be argued to be superior without much grasping at straws?

From your list, maybe the first Sonic the Hedgehog. It definitely worked better than 2 and Chaos for the reduced screen real state, and some of the graphic changes looked nicer.

The two Power Rangers games actually controlled like decent arcade fighters, yet they couldn't get MK and SF to play any good so most people thought it wasn't possible.

I'd say that, from my list, we can exclude Tails Adventure and Sonic Triple Trouble due to being full Game Gear exclusives. Legend of Illusion is an exclusive too, unless you count the Brazilian port on Master System. I think Sonic the Hedgehog is more fun to play on Game Gear, it just feels more polished overall to me and most changes were for the better, the visibility also isn't an issue here due to the level design. Lucky Dime Caper is another one I could argue in favor of the Game Gear version, as it does have quite a few differences from the Master System version in level design and also that you have a health bar, instead of having a hit take your weapon away and then the next one take a life, here you always keep your weapon, it's better to me.

I absolutely adore emulating Game Gear on my smartphone, it's probably the system I love to emulate the most on it, because it has few buttons, and a simpler library overall, which makes it so the touch screen controls don't feel cumbersome, and the screen crunch isn't too bad because it makes the sprites look big on a 6.6" screen, also when rotating the smartphone horizontally, the screen stays perfectly in the middle while keeping just enough space on the left and right for the controls, and it feels quite similar to a Game Gear in a way, also Lemuroid is a top notch Android emulator.

No problem, anon! I was really surprised too when trying both of them out, overall I find the Game Gear version a little better, but I can also see why someone could prefer the Master System version, they're still pretty similar at the end of the day, definitely recommend both of them.
