Bluster was indeed a stroke of comedic brilliance. I've always associated him with Swanky Kong, and largely imagine them as the same character. King K. Rool and Cranky Kong were performed and characterized perfectly. They're the voices I read all of their lines in to this day, and always have been, since I had the dubious honor of experiencing the TV show before the games. Rool's aristocratic bearing and drive to be seen as cultured and important pair really well with his costumed personas gimmick from the games to make him feel like a deranged thespian. The show overlooking the costumes to the point of giving K. Rool a stated disdain for pirates was a mistake, but the unique pirate croc character we got out of it was more or less worth it. Klump and Krusha were the consummate pair of goons. Funky was great. DK's personality was accurate, and his singing voice was absolutely worth the musical element. Diddy was fine, as long as he wasn't singing. Candy was the only real misstep with the characters, along with downplaying Dixie.

I'd argue it was the second best video game cartoon of its day, after Earthworm Jim. Its biggest problem was employing cliched scripts where DK was constantly abused by the characters who ostensibly care about him; any of them would turn against him at the drop of a hat. It just gets frustrating and tiresome. I understand why they couldn't make it an action cartoon like the IP deserved (the technology/funding wasn't there; characters can't even interact with objects, and any item they pick up had to be baked into the render, so they never visibly pick up or put down anything), but since it more or less had to be a sitcom, they could have invested more in the plotting and execution.

I think what makes this series great is how the animators used their (obviously limited at the time) resources and CGI.
Iirc there was one episode with fake Candy robot where they just used regular Candy's 3D model doing "robot" things (like head falling off, etc).

I was so pumped for the dkc show when it came on tv and was massively disappointed

>> No.9830827

The Nintendo-produced DK spinoffs made him a generic grandfather figure and the Retro titles did nothing to really walk that back. It's unclear what he likes. I actually just got back from my second screening and I like this Cranky, it was just unexpected and took some getting used to. Aron Tager's take and the characterization he was given were much better and very true to the games (and just as importantly, their manuals), though, for sure. His voice is the only one I can read those lines in. Always will be.

>> No.9830968

>>9830827
I agree with Aron Tager being the definitive Cranky, it was perfect on all fronts, but given how said characterization carried on to the Japanese dub of the cartoon and Cranky's Cabin from the show was given a whole playset, I do think they can see the humor of Cranky being a cotchety old monkey.

>> No.9830972

>>9830968
I remember what I was referencing now. It was specifically about Nintendo not understanding the manual being packed with jokes where Cranky puts the game down relentlessly, due to their relative lack of sarcasm and self-deprecating humor culturally. They asked Rare if they really wanted to proceed with this direction before letting them go ahead and do it. I conflated this with how non-Rare depictions of Cranky never really had any bite to them, which also would have explained that. I guess we'll just have to see how he is in the next DK game. The...next DK game, yeah, they'll announce that any day now. 9 years since Tropical Freeze.

Supposedly, Koizumi's team has been working on a new DK game for a while now, I'm crossing my fingers after TotK's release we'lll hear about it.

But I do agree, Cranky lacks the bite he had back then nowadays. They should at least let him be angrier at the enemies in some sort of dialogue. Closest I think he got was joking at the player's expense if you buy the Banana juice to take 10 hits.

That was a rumor started by DKVine in the fall of 2018. It gained traction among leaker larpers a year or two ago. Cynically, they made it up to get new blood interested in their dying 90's web forum. Realistically, their source was mistaken or possibly baited, because the reason they believe this rumor is because the same person told them the details of K. Rool's Smash trailer before it was revealed. This person could have gotten turned around somewhere else when it came to DK leaks outside of Smash's sphere. There is a small part of me that believes they made the whole thing up for traffic.

Got it in one. HD development has blown them the fuck out and all they can do is crawl. /v/ itself was actually a place to hace conversations about videogames. There were some console warring and people angry feeling really jaded about the industry, but you could legitimately go "Hey, let's talk about [game]" and have a genuine discussion about it, hopes for sequels, dissapointments and the like.

Only exceptions would be the Halo threads, Oldfags who were then on their 20s had a massive disdain for the Halo series and "Halobabies", any Halo thread would be threated as a beacon for "OP is 12 years old, ban him", and I'll admit I took part on that, on not wanting on /v/ discussion of Halo, later CoD, since they were seen as "the games that only children play (in spite of their rating)". Mods wouldn't usually obey, but Halo conversations would normally happen when most people were asleep, not too dissimilar to Naruto threads on /a/ having to take place when a good chunk of the userbase and mods were asleep. But even in spite of that I'd call those better, more sincere days.

The songs elevated the show. I am supremely disappointed Ninty didn't even attempt to make any of the monkey voices sound like they did in DKC. Fuck Illumination.

Also Candy could have been like she was in the games but being a bitchy feminist had more comedic potential (and the show was too primitive to animate loose hair, look at the time DK had his head shaved).

Unfortunately they only did for the Japanese market. DK's current voice actor who's been on the role since Jungle Beat sounds like the seiyuu who voiced DK in the Japanese dub of the cartoon. I really wish they had Megumi Hayashibara or a soundalike back as Diddy if we're going that way.

I meant the Mario Movie. I'm not watching until some fan does a redub.
