mario going 3d was mistake. any ip that started as 2d should have never "devolve" into 3d

anyways, hardware belonging to the sixth generation is pretty damn old at this point.
i think it's fine discussing gen 6 knowing how far the technology has come.
consider the comparable qualities between generation 5 and 6; it's like night and day.
where the industry is currently, it's on a magnitude of galaxy and universe when factoring in generation 6 and 9 (current).

i do, however, find it disappointing how the mods allow discussion of hardware and software beyond what's outlined in their sticky for this board.
it's clearly a result of shitposting stragglers from /v/ and/or zoomers with ad(h)d and/or reading incomprehension.

for an official mario title, sunshine is alright.
the game is certainly beautiful with the water and environments.
(i.e. Sirena Beach sunset & Pianta Village night/day missions)

concerning "best", i still give that title to SMB3 in spite of it being a sidescroller.

sure, SM64 3D Land borrows modern mechanics, but it brings elements of what made SMB3 an interesting game for its time - for SM64 (vanilla only having 3 power caps for flying, invincibility/weighting, and invisibility/phasing).

It sure did, but the water gimmick feels like something they had lying around in a prototype or internal tech demo which they repurposed as a Mario game because of its showcase possibilities. It makes for a gameplay rhythm and pacing that plays out as less engaging than SM64 imo, though I'm sure some enjoy it.

Unlike the manchildren that defend Sunshine because of nostalgia, I've never played it when it came out but just 100%'d it this week, pic related. It's worse than either SM64 or Galaxy, and I don't really like 64. The pleasant aesthetics and setting are only skin deep, once you actually sit down to play it you realize how sloppy it actually is. It has less levels, more reused assets and enemies than 64, your long jump is gone, the physics are inconsistent and dealing with slopes is a coin flip. It has a few weirdly obtuse moments where the solution makes little sense. It's clearly a rushed game, with plenty of them being a gimme while absurd shit like Pachinko and the Lilypad being barely playtested. Corona Mountain was supposed to be a full level but then it got downgraded to just being a really shit last stretch, and the final boss is shit. And don't get me fucking started on blue coins.

At least try gex enter the gecko and deep cover gecko. They are actually pretty fun. The camera is no worse than sm64 and if you like campy b tier comedy slogans, you’ll be in love. I’m not saying it’s better than sm64 (though I do prefer it) I’m saying it deserves to be up there with top 5th gen 3d platformers. It’s better than most.
