A lot of the stupid shit under the hood and weird defaults are from the "Randi" Haight era of ZDoom. Which Graf cant really change easily without breaking mod compatibility even more.

Man eviternity map 27 kills the software renderer. Also noticed that in dsda-doom and I guess in prboom+ aswell all enemy sprites float slightly in the air when using opengl, what’s up with that? It’s like they’re rendered in a slightly misaligned position.

Doom's sprites are offset so their feet are under the floor, because the software renderer can draw them over the floor. Its hard to describe but youll know what i mean if you look at them side by side. Its not that simple in OpenGL, so GZDoom has the option to either automatically raise them above the floor or let their feet be clipped off. Kaiser found a way to render it properly in OpenGL in his Strife port, but no other port dev has implemented it for whatever reason.

I have a yearly tradition of playing Spooktober.wad every Halloween evening, despite the varying quality of the maps. It's not Halloween if something isn't shitty and spooky, so I feel it's in the spirit of things. But I'm playing the second Quake Halloween Jam out of curiosity and it's honestly a lot better. I think I'll be adding this one to the rotation too.
It's really comfy and only let down by some maps being too spacious with nothing happening to warrant it and it not being Halloween right now.

Ah yes, EDuke32, where mod compatibility between versions is SO bad that authors have no choice but bundling the version of it they made the mod for, because there's a +75% chance that every new update will alter some function they relied on and thus break the mod.
GzDoom having occasionally broken a few things over the years has NOTHING on that shit.

That's a specific genre of maps, which at most bleeds over a little bit in other works. You look something high profile like BTSX, and you do get slaughter, but only a bit, I think only in like three levels, two which are secret.
Otherwise it's outright advertised as slaughterriffic, or you're looking at something like Sunlust, which is predicated on being tough as nails, but with the slaughter being absent initially, until it starts to dial it up, getting at its peak by the last third.

I love Quake, but even a large group encounter of like 30 doesn't really work well, barring giving you and the monsters LOTS of space, and even then not that well. A proper horde of like 100 at once, which is generally considered a large amount for Doom's gameplay with most styles of maps, just doesn't fly.

There's also one retro FPS (the best one, once it hits full release) I played recently, but unfortunately some anon or mod here is allergic to it or something.

From a technical know-how standpoint Doom and even GZDoom are incredibly easy and convenient to pick up, learning the ropes on good mapmaking customs and eventually making good maps is harder. People are pretty understanding to babby's first maps though, we've all been there.

>make something that stands out or will I always be playing catch up with people who have been doing this for 20+ years?
Depends what you want out of it. Or what you want out of your interest in modding/game development in general. If you want to 'stand out' in Doom you're gonna have to work hard but there's always amazing newcomer mappers in the scene so there's no impossible barriers to entry like that.

They can't even be sincere about that. The moment they think it'll make them look bad, it's "Marisa's statement has been nothing but disappointing", still desperately trying to save face and shift the blame. The reality is that an actual friend reached out to Marisa and convinced her not to play along with their bullshit. That's what they're fucking disappointed in, that they were denied the opportunity to prop up a lie and bully other communities into submission.

>> No.9832045 [DELETED]

I think there's more than just that.

Marisa has admitted to some very inappropriate behavior, and she should really not partake in spaces like ZDF or various Discords where there's minors. I think her misdeeds are somewhat mischaracterized (her accuser is more a groomer than her by any stretch of the imagination, Marisa is guilty of being an autistic and horny idiot), but if you've spent any time around her online, such as say, when she posted with a trip here, it'd be fairly obvious she's pretty socially maladjusted/underdeveloped, recent reveals making it clear it's to the extent that she's unsafe.
However, Marisa was convinced to ADMIT to and own up to her wrongdoing, to come clean about it, which most people guilty of the same would not do. To me that suggests that she's willing to try to make up for it, and that she MIGHT be able to be conditioned to become a healthier to be and better adjusted person, with the right professional help. I implore her to pursue that.

Now, Rachael, she doesn't give a FUCK about any of that, that Marisa is a risk to others, that Marisa needs help, no, Rachael wanted her to lie about it, to recant her admission, and then have her squad of mods to guard her and cover up anything and everything relating to it, borderline enabling Marisa's unsafe behavior.
Rachael, who manages a community which has many minors, is entirely comfortable with hiding a person who has been very inappropriate, even unsafe, with some of said minors, all for precious political optics.

It's more than just the transgenderism, Rachael is in charge of one of the biggest forums for the Doom fandom, where much development of content and software goes on.
Because Rachael is a fundamentally evil person with no sense of right and wrong (predating her taking charge of ZDF, see Skulltag), she has been increasingly disliked for how he she's been running the ship over the years. This has long since gone across the political spectrum, I know of dozens of left leaning and strongly pro-LGBTQ people in the community who hates her fucking guts, and now this bizarre bullshit of hers comes to light.

Not only is this something extremely immoral, it raises countless questions, it's easy to assume that she's done these things before, and will do again. How many ACTUAL predators are skulking around on ZDF right now? How safe are minors using that forum? Not only is the optics of this reveal far worse than what was the case with Marisa's crimes alone, this may very well have some pretty significant ramifications for one of this fandom's main hubs, this could very well affect the development of one of the major sourceports if it all goes wrong enough.

I kind of agree that this stuff isn't really appropriate for the thread, because it turns this place into /v/. But at the same time the current community leaders are all either trans or support them and try to cover up the many, many instances of awful behaviour and this absolutely has to stop. I hate how this one group of people essentially have a free pass to be creeps simply because the loudest political team deemed it so.

I outright say she ISN'T blameless, what I'm saying is that the kid there is a sexual predator outright, who demonstrated a habit of ACTUALLY grooming children, some as young as 12. Did you miss that he was boasting about how he had coerced nudes out of little boys? Marisa, for as sleazy and shitty as she is for partaking in that, and who SHOULD have known better, is STILL nowhere NEAR on his level.

You could probably fix Marisa with the right approach and effort, but a guy who's sexually extorting young boys, and who's proud of that, before he's even an adult himself, has no hope in hell of being rehabilitated. Notice how he disappeared himself completely when Marisa admitted she did something fucked? Because he's worried of getting caught for his own, far more serious crimes.

We would have had something like that a long time ago if a gaggle of pseudo-purists didn't dismiss the FTE engine at every opportunity, effectively stunting its growth by cutting off most potential feedback. Now what could have been done with a convenient, albeit basic physics system has been cobbled into a janky monstrosity that calls a gorillion QuakeC tracelines a second and will probably crash any netquake server that tries to load it.
Even if you think the FTE engine is bloated, its physics handling could have been adopted by other ports with no impact on vanilla gameplay.

It stems from the same favoritism that has hampered everything else. vkQuake's Novum and FTE's Spike have largely retreated from the Quake 'community' and therefore aren't allowed relevancy - though vkQuake has recently forced itself back into the spotlight by sheer impressiveness. Ironwail's developer pals around with known figures and that has allowed it to become the undisputed golden goose despite vkQuake being more stable and having about the same features.
Retroquad was on course to take that same place, but Mankrip started e-begging and acting schizophrenic enough to annoy the people he was trying to suck up to (the engine is basically dead now, with only small monthly updates on his Twitter).
Quakespasm remained popular in the new paradigm simply through accumulated clout + little competition until the last few years. QSS stayed popular for a while because of the features that AD used, but it's mostly irrelevant now.

True. Look at fucking Zandybam, it didn't even complete Decorate support, and you can still do wild shit. Then look at good old Zen Dynamics, so much of the nifty stuff it does is plain Decorate, and a lot of the added stuff it needed ACS to do can easily be done simpler with later Decorate functions, same for Zero Tolerance.

ZScript is potentially atomic in power, but the good old bundle of dynamite which is Decorate still has a pretty damn fucking potent yield even by modern standards.

Trying all of dr_cosmobyte's mods. All weaker than vanilla weapons but for the most part not in a way that feels bad to play
However the 7 slot rifle in Nightmare Logic (one of the few mods that has one) gets a measly 1 ammo from some plasma pickups, and that one strictly single target shot does a measly 480 damage, Technically what you'd get on average from 20 cells with the vanilla plasma gun, but the mod's own plasma gun gets 40 cells from a pickup with better damage variance than normal. You would hope that a hyped up anti materiel rifle would at LEAST make a vanilla hell knight go byebye without any extra buttering up, if not a bigger demon
That at the original pistol, somewhere between the pistol and chaingun in a vacuum, has no competitive edge over the other 2 starting weapons, the magnum oneshots imps and the smg gets more bullets. The knight playerclass that starts with the default pistol would've been viable in older versions of the mod where the rifle doesn't drop from shotgun pickups and only knight has it, but that sounds like even more of a balance nightmare
Those gripes aside, decent weapon set for wads that don't expect you to hold down the rocket launcher or BFG for more than 5 seconds straight, and interesting for being literally a megabyte big

Aside from perfect timing & throw force ratio, I think Blood's dynamite is satisfying due to the way game handles explosions. It's not your simple "calculate the distance, apply momentum" from Quake, you can feel the blast wave gradually pushing things.

>Do you like Doom?
>Do you like maps people make for Doom?
>Do you feel like it would be fun to make maps for Doom?
If your answer to all of these answers is "Yes!", then I think the answer is obvious. Replace maps with mods to get the same answer for gameplay mods and what not.

Consider that making maps for Doom is fairly easy, especially with modern tools like Slade and Ultimate Doombuilder, which are flexible and easy to use. MBF21 is an overall feature rich and powerful map format that's easy to grasp, and if you want to bother with its extended and more useful DeHacked, then the DecoHack utility makes that very easy to do. You of course also have the advantages of UMAPINFO, and then we have the ZDoom side, where you have the infinite flexibility of UDMF format, along with Decorate and ZScript.
There's many good and useful resources for this too.

tl;dr if it seems like a fun idea, try it, you can plain just noodle away at little experiments at your own pace, maybe you'll come up with something cool

>> No.9833207

So, I'm about to release an MBF21 wad with a lot of decorations. Problem is, I made them 16 units tall, same as original, but that means in gzDoom you can just walk over them. Which is a problem.
I assume what I should do now is to convert decohack code into decorate, but I never worked with decohack before and thus I'm not sure what do I need to change.

And do I need to change custom monsters? They already have normal height, so probably not, right?

Just make the decoration as tall as like, the big brown tress, or whatever, that'll cover everything. Monsters and players don't move over those things anyway with 'infinitely tall' monsters.

>> No.9833226

>>9833219
See, the thing is big brown trees are 20 units tall (I was wrong saying they are 16, but I was close). If they are the right height, they'll start catching projectiles, which is not supposed to happen unless you play on gzDoom where they are as tall as sprites or so.

So here goes for you boys,

I live under such a massive boulder, and will continue to do so that I really couldn't care less about what's going on out there, but I'm glad we could make it a better place while we did.

Now I thank you guys on 4chan for joining and playing, and having all that fun together while it lasted.
We are very blessed that we could make this little forum a better place even for just a moment, and that through it we inspired new bonds, friendships, and original /vr/ content.

Kudos to Mac also, it was together we got the ball rolling, and without him I would have ended it a long time ago.
I know he really enjoyed playing, laughing, and making stuff with you guys even if he wont tell you himself.

Still, everything in this world is temporary. That includes our dumb little servers.
Mac doesn't want to run the servers anymore, the Doom Community is in a time of great shamefulness, and I'm moving on with my life to bigger and better things.
I hope you brothers do the same, and that you can search for the love of Christ which we were able by grace to share a mere reflection of.

Godspeed /vr/-bros, and God bless. May you live on to greater heights, and carry the spirit of community and brotherly love wherever God takes you. Amen.

It feels like the designer doesn't have enough confidence in their mapping skill or the player's combat skill, so they throw down regenerating items as a thoughtless failsafe against running out of supplies. Losing health or ammo stops being an issue of worrying about conserving resources and more worrying about stalling a fight until supplies comes back. There's also the player inclination to just sit and wait for 5 minutes while slowly rebuilding their stack and getting bored in the process because they don't have much of an incentive to push forward when they can just cheese your laziness.

It's felt tighter like IF and I've also only played the first few levels so I haven't ran into many explosives yet, but this is also part of why I'm so weirded out: I think the gunplay feels good in Ion Fury, like real fucking good.
The weapon animations in here haven't felt as polished, but there's also 11 goddamned weird ass characters and yet it's felt as good and at times better than IF. This is just through two dudes so far. The enemies also look great.
>>9834149

Excuse me, these "dumb little servers" weren't dumb nor little. They were great and big and most certainly deserve to live. Now it's working and the mod is fantastic. One small issue, entering new units immediately inverts the mouse no matter what I do, so I need to go into the options to revert it each time. I also needed to use the console command >>9833253 mentioned because the mod is oddly bent on making Bitterman left handed otherwise, but at least that fix stuck.

With Sandy, it's also a bit strange to me. He made my favorite Doom II maps, but I kept rolling my eyes throughout early E4.
To be fair, I like some of E4, but it also has my least favorite maps (M3 and M8 especially). McGee's maps were just largely boring or forgettable, E3M6 excepted... Oh, of course, I double check and Willits worked on that one, too.

You mean via the Gremlin's 'style' field or the inventory item thing? If the latter, try using the float in air spawnflag on the weapon. It's an issue with items falling under the map before the inventory check happens.

Also if you're the same guy who asked out volleying stuff earlier, I got a little carried away and made a generic volley function that I'm adding to monsters who didn't have it before. Debugging is taking a little longer that I thought, but it won't be *too* much longer.

zdf on maximum damage control
>why the fuck are my posts getting deleted? are the zdoom mods jannies here as well?
it's possible but they could also be trying to prevent an entire thread derailing cause of it, like how that happens all the time on /v/ for a lot of games good luck lol

>> No.9837590 [DELETED]

asking for a tldr then alluding to the fact that you already know what the drama is makes you a disingenuous negroid.

go back to /v/.

>There are more Megaman players than Doom players in Zandronum
It's fucking sad bros. I just wanna play pvp or pvp wads. CTF, GvH, All Out War, doesn't matter. All this survival/coop bullshit is getting tiring. You used to be able to just pop into a server and get things going very quick and now you need all this player organization. Then the brains that did make pvp mods straight up left. Why am I forced to play Megaman?

Okay, new progs.dat and fgd are up.
Several Quoth enemies now have volleying, and volleydelay is now a float value equal to seconds between shots instead of a weird choice between 3 delays.

...Which I've just realized probably means I have to make ent files for a few older maps... oh well.

Probably not much of anything. Given the absolute state of 'Murica, I'm going to need to get a second job and I've already been putting that off for a while.
I was thinking about digging into FTE and trying to make something with it. Maybe someday.

It still is DOOM thread as well, so nothing wrong with making a joke. Especially if it's a good one.

>Is it possible to have a retro shooter community that isn't filled with egomaniacs and awful people?
Personally, to me this feels like a problem that any classic/old/retro game communities have in general. Not just FPS ones.

Hey guys, I was chilling on my couch the other day and felt like playing some doom with a gamepad. I eventually created some ZDL files and addded to my Game's frontend and had a blast. I also messed around with this aim assist mod I found for mods that require mouselook and it helps greatly.
SO then I though, why not create a full screen launcher/wrapper for zdl that is controller friendly? I'm thinking of creating a quick unity launcher that uses ZDL API to create ZDLs, quickly choose wads + Sourceport etc. What do you guys think of it? any feature suggestions?

It's not a matter of pride, Willits flaw isn't an inflated ego, it's that he's a borderline sociopath who's wholly comfortable with telling any lie possible if he thinks it can benefit him personally, and he has no problem doing that at the expense of his peers and colleagues. This is why he did shit at iD which unquestionably damaged the products they were all working on, and the company as a whole, because it was some sort of benefit for him at the moment.
