I finished the Rugrats Go Wild for GBA that some eBay seller sent to me along with whatever I had actually bought. It wasn't as bad as it could have been but it also wasn't as good as it could have been. Plot progression kinda falls apart at the end, and the final challenge is anticlimactic. Apparently it might be because anbernic didn't sand the display frame before applying the glue (???). That and supposedly the the frame gets pretty got in spots which might've further weakened the glue. Some chinks have claimed their 405ms have straight up shut down due to overheating, but there's no hard evidence of that happening atm.

Anbernig got that reputation for "build quality" back when this scene was smaller and everyone was making Famiclone tier handhelds. So Anbernic looked pretty good compared to everyone else. Now that a lot of other companies have stepped up their game and we get and expect actual quality from these things, Anbernig is still just trucking along barely improving anything on their candybars and they're finally being exposed for it.

>Confirmed gb meant gigabit. 128mb ram.
>Extended play on higher end stuff like snes causes crashing
>Similar in performance to another shitheld with six buttons
>Sd card doesn't have much games on it, which can't be right. Might be the way it's partitioned or it has internal sd

working on getting the roms set up for my RG353P and man I had forgotten how much of a pain in the ass it is to do this for CD based systems since you can't just shove a ZIP file in like with cartridge based systems, you have to unzip them for their BIN & CUE or CHD files or whatever, that and the overall larger file sizes for them means it takes forever to get them transferred around even for systems with relatively small libraries like say the PCE-CD(which is the one I'm doing at the moment), it's going to be downright excruciating when I get around to PS1...

The Analogue Pocket ends the chinkheld wars, and the Anbernic RG351mp in mint green does survival horror like pure sex. Both are such satisfying choices.

But the greatest one of all, has to be the RG258v silver with a good case. Best of its class bar none, and you won't be worrying about scratching it or getting held up for it. I already don’t have a lot of time to play games I spend more time tinker trannying, organizing roms, scraping pictures, seeking out obscure translations, etc than playing anyways. Lol no, even the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has issues with AetherSX. If your bar for "everything" is above 50% for those two emulations and having something between the Odin Lite and regular Odin in performance, then yes, that meets the standard but that's not everything aka being able to play everything that doesn't have obvious emulation issues that needs to be fixed in software and the fact that AetherSX2 development is now frozen in time with nothing to replace and continue its software improvements means PS2 emulation on ARM/mobile will be stuck for quite a while.

I guess it's not everything, the only bit I'd seen on the chip before was Russ saying he couldn't find anything that doesn't run fullspeed. Still, it seems to be pretty good for PS2 in general. This was done before the last aesther update that improved performance a lot, and even then it seems like only Hot Shots and SOCOM had issues maintaining fullspeed.

it seems to run a lot of shit the SD845 in the Odin Base/Pro can't, and on benchmarks completely mogs it.

Oh I misread the specs, I thought it was an A73, not a A78, my bad, that's why I thought it would be below the Odin Pro's Snapdragon which uses the A75. Man, I guess the segment is earning enough money to make the lagging SOCs people can fit into these handhelds much better, that's only 3 generations behind the latest and greatest on smartphones.
With regards to PS2 emulation, I'm more or less talking about games that aren't usually classics (but there are some classics that run semi-bad like MGS3) which get focused on a lot but would be something that people would play because niche but people remember for nostalgia like SotC, Dirge of Cerberus, Shadow Tower, etc. which you can bruteforce your way into good performance on PC with PCSX2. Another is games you need to run in software mode. Rachet and Jak used to be in that camp but phones and performance have increased largely for those games, but others like Yakuza, Front Mission, Ace Combat can't hit good performance on mobile unless you want to be fine with annoying visual glitches and etc. I think it still works well enough even with the last build of AetherSX2 and the games that perform bad with workarounds will eventually get bruteforced but people have been lamblasting PS2 emulation for a lot of things that didn't have that much focus until recently.

kek no. I love this thing and it certainly has more power than the Anbernic, but no. That said I don't have the 35xx myself, but I assume it has a more solid build quality. If you twist the rk2023 at a certain angle you get a creak, but otherwise I love it and think it's well made. I'm sure the screen on the 35xx is good too, but as far as I can tell the rk2023 has the best 3.5" screen from the way ecelebs talk about it, and it certainly does look great in person.

So you're basically telling me I'm picking between build quality and screen quality, correct? Can the Powkiddy do Dreamcast and late 90s/early 00s arcade well? That's the main reason I didn't just get the Arbernec already. I'd like to play Die Hard Arcade, Dynamite Cop, and Elemental Gimmick Gear on the go and I know the Arbernec won't do that.
Also, would you say it would be simple to open the powkiddy and swap out the DPad for a SNES one and put some smaller buttons in there? I don't mind cutting the plastic to get the DPad to fit. I'm assuming sound quality means jack all if I use headphones, but is the speaker at least decent?

>> No.9818794

>>9818443
For the record I think the rk2023 build quality is good overall and similarly expect the screen on the 35xx to be good overall, but yes relatively speaking I think those are two strengths of the devices though I think the rk2023's greatest strength is how freaking comfortable it is to actually hold and play on

I just tried testing Dynamite Cop and E.G.G., and much to my surprise Dynamite Cop actually played pretty well. E.G.G. ran like shit during FMV cutscenes but then ran well during the regular gameplay as well as the 3D combat portion of gameplay. I say "much to my surprise" because literally everything else I've tried on Dreamcast ran like ass. Under Defeat, Border Down, Gigawing 2, Project Justice, Crazy Taxi 2, Sonic Adventure 2, and even Mars Matrix for some fucked up reason. At some point I just stopped trying any Dreamcast because I assumed none of it would be decent, but I guess that's technically wrong. Still, generally speaking it's ass for DC. As far as late 90s/early 2000s arcade, all the CPS2, CPS3, and Neo-Geo stuff I tried ran, well including Mars Matrix which ran like shit on DC. If you have anything in particular you want me to test I can do so.

As far as ease of opening it up and doing a swap I'm not sure, but personally I love the d-pad and buttons it came with. I know a lot of people have issues with the edges being "Sharp" since it drops off at like a 90 degree angle, and I was worried about that too before I actually got mine, but somehow when playing a fighter and doing a bunch of dp or qc/hc motions it's not something I notice. The speakers are surprisingly good, they get loud as fuck with no distortion/crackling at high volumes and it feels like the sound is being thrown straight into my face. My only beef is the bass is noticeably better on my RP3+, but I really doubt you'll find speakers this good on other sub $100 devices.

I tried both DC and Arcade versions of Crazy Taxi 1, and predictably the performance was the same since it's running on the same emulator emulating what is essentially the same hardware. It was still kinda ass skipping a third of its frames to maintain fullspeed, but at least it actually WAS maintaining fullspeed and wasn't skipping nearly 2/3rds of its frames like CT2. I then tried both the arcade and Saturn versions of Die Hard Arcade. I couldn't get the arcade version to even boot because I guess I downloaded the wrong thing, but I'm pretty sure it was going to run considerably worse in MAME anyways. The Saturn version was unfortunately straight up unplayable. I don't mean it was a choppy mess and just kind of sucks, I mean you can't play it like this, it's running at halfspeed and frameskip does nothing to help. This was in the standalone yabasanshiro, the retroarch version would crash right after the title screen.

So yeah, if you're like me and really care about Dreamcast and Saturn, I'd pony up for an RP3+ or something. I would've been over the moon to play DC and Saturn on this thing, but unfortunately the chip just doesn't cut it. So yes, I think everything below DC and PSP (and Saturn for that matter) is about right. There is at least a lot of headroom for runahead, shaders, and more demanding/accurate settings for those consoles thankfully. I have a frame of runahead and some really demanding sound settings when I play Megadrive for instance that the rk3326 devices couldn't handle alone, let alone both at the same time.

The stock firmware is actually great, it's just a Powkiddy-ized variant of JELOS basically. Only thing I had to do immediately was swap the music, but that's a personal preference. That said, JELOS, UnOS, and ArkOS are all now supporting the thing. I'm pretty much always using ArkOS at this point.

One more time just as kind of a PSA.

Got an older android phone laying around? Something with 2gb of ram at least? Preferably android 6.0+ os.

You can take that phone. Strip a lot of thebstock firmware out of it: google play, youtube, facebook, carrier apps, samsung/lg/sprint/account... can all be uninstaled.

Universal Android Debloater. Before you use this you want to install the aurora store apk(lets you download google apps with no google account or your google account if you want.)
F-droid/droid-ify: these will let you download appa to replace whatever spy/stock firmware that you will remove.

Take your time
example if youre gonna replace your launcher? Do so BEFORE you uninstall/debloat the stockware. Do this with anything youre gonna replace first. grab retroarch from the droidify repositories or from aurora store along with any emulators desired. Customize your shit. Then plug in your phone withbusb and fire up the universal android after installing it on windows or linux or whatever.

You will notice a tab that saya recommended. These are all safe to debloat. Click this tab and you can choose advanced, expert, unsafe. These are the levels of safe to debloat apps and firmware. Click each package and it will give you details on what youre uninstalling. Go through this and strip out all that you dont want. This will pump your battery life UP and reduce cpu/gpu loads.(we wanna focus that on gaming after all) and once youre all finished. Hit reboot in the debloater gui and unplug your phone. Thia is great for making a game centric device as well as everyday phone use if youre simply inclined to increase the life and customization of your phone.

Its a great hobby, but mostly its just being sweaty and looking mournfully up hills you've voluntarily decided to waddle up with your big fucking backpack, squinting at maps, being uncomfortable (choose your flavour: too hot, soaked through, cold enough that you're afraid to stop moving, physically fine but suddenly feeling extremely isolated and/or existential fear that you've been going the wrong way for three hours and are now making the choice between spending the night in the corpse bag or trying to get down in the dark), 15% cooking and administration tasks and maybe 10% looking at the view and doing the joy in nature thing.

Jesus, I had no idea the 001 model of the GBA SP had such horrific screen design. It is like pulling teething trying to assemble or clean one because how of easily dust appears behind the screen. And I do mean *behind the screen*. Not behind the outer lens. What a nightmare. My SP is really old, and in more or less mint condition, so I might just sell it and get a 101 SP. They look good not blurry nor overly pixelated, though there is some slight hitching introduced by the difference in refresh rates between GBA and the DS, its extremely hard to notice.

Small though and the DS screens are bad, no matter what model you get

I used an EZ Flash and a DS Lite for a time and its a fine way to play, but for the cost of the ez flash and the sd card you're most of the way to your preferred chinese toy of the month, you're all the way there if you factor in the DS, though you can play DS games on that.

I disagree, the stock image is unusable for anything other than GB games and PSX for some reason, SNES was horrible, Megadrive not great, didn't test the rest before moving off of it.

No rebindable controls and no hotkeys are two massive issues that make moving immediately worth doing. Other annoying shit, aspect ratio settings and filters stay between cores, so if you have one setting for one system and others for other systems, hope you like configuring them again every time you move between the two systems.

I played through Castlevania AOS on the stock rom and it was fun, played well and I didn't have any crashes or anything, but anything but GBA and GBC wasn't fun and ran like ass.

The included ROMS are mostly crap too, at least on the one I got a lot of the roms just crash or have awful bugs and hacks applied to them, load your own roms.

If you're waiting on a new card showing up you could just play around with Garlic OS or MinUI on the stock card until your good SD turns up, it will last long enough to let you check out your options and play through a few games before your card arrives. I went with MinUI because like you the thought of having to configure retroarch on a gameboy filled me with actual palpable fear.

Oh, it is a nightmare, but it is possible. Cleaning the screen or replacing the screen of a 001 SP is the most teeth pulling scenario you can have regarding retro portables. Why? Because the 001 SP has THREE FUCKING SCREENS that must be PERFECT with NO imperfections, due to how easily the smallest smudge or tiny spec of dust shows up due to the front lit nature of it.
You have:
>the actual, physical hardware itself that is creating and displaying the image
>the screen overlay that is placed on top of that hardware
>the final, outer lens for the GBA display
That's three fucking screens that need to be SPOTLESS. You need to assemble your 001 SP with the speed of SATAN to avoid one dust particle from falling into any of those screens. It is hell. But it is possible. You just need to have a very clean work environment and move fucking fast.

I don't know if this counts as a handheld, but recently my smartphone, a Samsung Galaxy M30, started having some battery issues, and after sending it to repair I was essentially told that it's normal because it's 3 years old and it'll only get worse over time unless I spend a bunch of money for repairs, so I decided to spend that money on a brand new replacement, a Samsung Galaxy A14, anyways I didn't want to just leave my old one collecting dust, and I couldn't sell it for much... so I've decided to turn it into a dedicated retro handheld console, so I set it back to factory settings and from that point on it was just installing a bunch of emulators and ROMs, though I'm mostly using RetroArch as it's quite good on Android. I'm having a good time, it's nice having a handheld that can function as a portable PC whenever needed, that's very customizable, and the MOCUTE-060 I just got has been making the experience even more relaxing.

I went for the MOCUTE-060 because it was cheap and had a symmetrical stick layout, and so far it works, but I must say that you feel how cheap it really is, it's not a premium product at all and the buttons are far from the best I've used... but it's not awful and I can play everything I want just fine, if you find it for really cheap like I did then I recommend giving it a shot to see if it's your thing or not.

OR..... YOU CAN....debloat the stock firmware with universal android debloater. I bet that the battery is in fine health.
Got an older android phone laying around? Something with 2gb of ram at least? Preferably android 6.0+ os.

You can take that phone. Strip a lot of the stock firmware out of it: google play, youtube, facebook, carrier apps, samsung/lg/sprint/account... can all be uninstaled.

Universal Android Debloater.
Before you use this, you want to install the aurora store apk(lets you download google apps with no google account or your google account if you want.)
F-droid/droid-ify: these will let you download apps to replace whatever spy/stock firmware that you will remove.

Take your time
example if youre gonna replace your launcher? Do so BEFORE you uninstall/debloat the stockware. Do this with anything you're gonna replace first.

Grab retroarch from the droidify repositories or from aurora store along with any emulators desired. Customize your shit. Then plug in your phone with usb and fire up the universal android after installing it on windows or linux or whatever.

You will notice a tab that says recommended.

Retroid is so slow at sending handhelds to customers that they've always had a chart on the site indicating when the next shipment of a specific color is and whether you're going to be on that shipment. For as much shit as I give Anbernic, they're at least one of the only Chinese companies that have their shit together when it comes to shipping products.

As you stated it wasn't actually released *4 days ago since they mentioned there would be a 2 - 3 day delay, but yeah they should've given an update before they took off for the weekend since obviously nothing shipped on friday, the 3rd day of the delay. knowing them it'll start shipping monday unless there's another delay.

>>9823804
Powkiddy is good on that too and I admire that they're still doing free shipping, but yes Retroid, Ayn, Miyoo, and I think to a lesser extent Aya all suck ass in this regard. Frankly so does Valve and Analogue even though they're not Chinese. Ayn in particular is the fucking worst about this, there are people that waited 8 months for their Odin Lite.

Handhelds this bulky kind of kills the purpose of a handheld imo, like I'm not going to carry a steam deck around and if I'm at home why not just play on a console/PC. The "pocketable" factor is a big selling point for me in handhelds

I'm doing an experiment where, when I go in to put electrical tape over the contacts to fix the d-pad, I'm also going to be swapping out the d-pad for a custom made d-pad in the shape of the phat original Nintendo DS's d-pad. I have renders of both the RG35XX's d-pad and the NDS phat's d-pad, going to make the latter's shape fit and work with the former's hardware, 3D print it, smooth it out, and see how it works.

I'm also considering buying some "clicky contacts" for the RG35XX to make it more feel like the phat NDS's, which would wonderfully click into all eight directions.

With literally zero evidence, I have a feeling they're going to want a 3 month gap between the Flip and the RP4. Heck, maybe even a bit longer since they still plan to release that vertical handheld too. And then once it does come out, you're stuck waiting at least another month after shipping starts to have yours ship since it's a new in-demand product and that's just how every Retroid launch is.

So yeah, if you don't want to wait (I wouldn't), you could always buy the RP3+ now and just get comfortable with the idea of selling the device on eBay once your RP4 arrives.

My autistic fixation on handheld devices is peaking into my dreams, I just met a 90s slightly plump but in a good way waifu girl and her plucky comic relief friend in a mattress store while trying to return one that I had bought the night before for being too large for the bed sheets I had, and they used some kind of gameboy come calculator as a PDA but it was mechanical like a typewriter crossed with the control label of some pre digital factory machine.

It had a feature for figuring out when your parking ticket ran out that involved turning a key to indicate whether it was a Sunday or not then punching in day/date/time and flipping a rocker switch.

I offered to help pay for the mattress they were trying to buy then changed my mind once we were outside the shop and they invited me on a guest to save conic reliefs brother from some shit in a different city, which I agreed to and also offered to part finance the purchase of a new bed frame in lieu of the mattress
At this point I woke up and briefly panicked thinking I had missed our rendezvous in the other city before realising it was a dream.

It's really not. I'm very sensitive to input lag and I can't tell the difference going back and forth between the Pocket and my RP3+ with retroarch latency settings tweaked, including runahead.

I can tell a massive difference though when I go back and forth from the AP or RP3+ to an IPS modded GBA. Those IPS screens are just massively laggy. I measured up to 5 frames of lag in those, and only 2 - 3 on the AP/RP3+

I want a RP3+, but I feel like the urge to play GC/PS2 games will be there, and then I'll be annoyed when they run poorly. I don't know of any alternatives that are in the same price point that do PS2 better. At least DC games run great.

I'm in a similar situation - both my PSP system and GBA SP (101) system are getting up there in age, and if I wanted to return to using them frequently, I'd need to get a new screen for the PSP, and a new rechargeable battery and maybe a new screen for the SP. So, currently, I'm at a crossroads of either fixing up my old portable consoles, or just spending the $149 for the RP3+ and being able to play both those libraries from there. Never once have I owned or used a third party portable game console before, so I'm a little hesitant.

Predicting the exact timeline for technology advancements can be challenging, but we can make an educated guess based on past trends and the current state of emulation technology.

Over the past few years, we've seen significant improvements in the performance and capabilities of retro handheld devices. These improvements are due to a combination of better hardware, advancements in emulation software, and increased interest in retro gaming. As technology continues to advance, we can expect handheld devices to become more powerful and capable of emulating more demanding consoles, like the PS2 and Gamecube.

Currently, devices in the Retroid Pocket 3+ price range (around $100) are capable of emulating consoles up to the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation 1 with good performance. However, PS2 and Gamecube emulation require more powerful hardware due to their more complex architectures and higher graphical requirements.

Considering the rate of hardware improvement, it could take around 3 to 5 years for a device in the Retroid Pocket 3+ price range to achieve approximately 50% compatibility with PS2 and Gamecube libraries. This estimate assumes that the cost of more powerful hardware will continue to decrease and that emulation software will also improve over time.

Hardware is inevitably going to get better and flagship mobile phones have technology that eventually makes its way into cheap Android TVs and handhelds 3-5 years later even if for some reason ARM processors progress die tomorrow and everyone moves to something else. The problem as always is software. Xbox emulation is nonexistent but considering progress on desktop, not surprising. No PS3 emulation efforts started. PS2 emulation progress is dead. I guess the only good thing is that the Nintendo side of things has software and progress associated with it but when the systems themselves are mobile already, it's redudant.

BASED! Hope you love it too m8. And the update with the performance boost was for ArkOS. At this point if you're gonna want to play any DC or Saturn on the thing you, you definitely want to use ArkOS over the variant of JELOS that comes on the stock card.
https://github.com/christianhaitian/arkos/wiki#download-links
Obviously you download from the link here that says it's for RK2023, and then you flash whatever card you want to use with it. If you've never flashed a card with one of these things before, there's instructions on how to do so right above that section in the link. It's a lot of words to basically just say
>download and unzip image
>use program to select image to flash onto your selected drive
>place flashed card into rk2023 and power on for rom partition to be created

But also yes you can use a wifi dongle with it
https://github.com/christianhaitian/arkos/wiki/Frequently-Asked-Questions---rk2023#q-how-do-i-configure-my-wifi-connection-in-arkos
Personally I did my art and meta data scraping on my PC ahead of time with skraper so I didn't need wifi. Just select "Recallbox" settings in the setup wizard and it'll configure everything exactly as needed in your rom directory so that all you have to do is drag and drop the produced "media" folder in the rom directories onto your flashed card at the same time as you drop your roms in.
https://www.skraper.net/
For updates once the card is flash, all I've had to do is drag and drop the new rk3566-OC.dtb and image file onto the boot directory of the flashed card.

I think the final solution for me, personally, is that portable games are best played portable. I don't see the appeal in playing these longform PS2 or GameCube games on a portable device. Sure it's neat, but are you really going to want to play titles like Final Fantasy X or Baten Kaitos on the go? I don't know, for me I think sticking with playing or emulating portable games on portable systems is best. I think that's why I like the smaller devices like the Miyoo Mini, it can recreate all the classic portable game systems, and is genuinely small and portable. As far as portable games go, is there a reason to get something like the Retroid Pocket 3+ over it? I think that system additionally gets you essentially PSP and no other portable systems to emulate. Maybe DS, but we're starting to get into the compromising realm of things, playing multiscreen games on one screen. No microphone for games that need it, etc.

I've removed all of the bloat I don't really use, keeping just a few basic Samsung applications, most of the Google stuff like Google Drive, which I need to transfer files from my PC into the smartphone since plugging it into my PC doesn't work anymore for some reason, and a bunch of emulators, RetroArch Plus should've been enough in theory, but I enjoy having backups, some single system emulators, and other multi system ones like Lemuroid, which I adore. If you have the technical skill, you can push it further via rooting the device and installing a custom kernel to allow for overclocking which it seems like is possible according to a cursory search on XDA forums. That would make some of the harder to emulate systems playable but it's not going to be easy and time-consuming and a tad risky if you make one wrong move. Also, you would need to fix getting your physical connection from PC to phone fixed.

is there a retro gaming scene in china? Like do they have "changs color corrected fastrom translation romhacking site" and argue about console wars and all that, or do they just have no idea what these old games they're sending to westerners are but they know it cuts a check so who cares.

>> No.9832154

>>9832126
There is but its pretty impenetrable for westerners and it doesn't have the cultural penetration retro stuff does here.

For games you've hear of a lot of the appreciation is more like the kinds of communities you get in the west based around liking old foreign films or anime etc. A lot of games that went onto become classics here never got released on China or released comparatively late

There is a big scene for old domestic stuff though, and there was a massive bootlegging scene in China in the 80s and 90s that lots of people have nostalgia for.

It literally depends on the actual screen itself. OLED can have a higher contrast ratio with deeper colors but it doesn't inherently have better depending on the manufacturer. You are falling for a simple marketing gimmick. Actually check the specs for what you buy. It's like if you see that a 3060 has 12gb and a 3080 has 10gb and you think the 3060 will outperform the 3080. Pixels and size matter most to me. That's why I run a 4k tv with only 60hz refresh rate as a monitor and not a 360hz 1080p panel. Because I'm not a professional csgo player who needs ultra high refresh rates. I want to not see the pixels.

The T618 devices, so the cheapest would be X18s. Would recommend spending a bit more for a RP3+ as a safe bet or a x28 as a possibly good gamble if you're feeling lucky. Even these still have some issues with a handful of edge cases like Grandia, Burning Rangers, and Dragon Force 2, however. I'd be surprised if something like the cheapest KTR1 or Odin Lite doesn't handle those at full speed, but the cheapest device I'm absolutely certain can handle everything at fullspeed no dips or frameskip is the Steam Deck.

It's perfect for 240p obviously. GBA you can either play at 1x (on the XL it's actually slightly larger that way than an OG GBA screen, even if it doesn't seem so due to the blackness around it) or you can install open AGB firm and play with the tolerable scaler that comes with that. It's not perfect, but certainly better than what you get with VC injection.
