Lots of wild stuff really. My favorite had to be the Super Castlevania IV proto, playable (at least half the game), all the different enemy sprites, sounds, level design and music! That totally new music for stage 2 is great, also little things like how the intro music piece that ended up being used for the library level was originally the map music.
It's one of my favorite games of all time and being able to have access to all this is priceless.

A lot of 8/16 bit devs were really disproportionately proud of implementing their first compression algo. For example I remember reading that Nassar from Squaresoft was very focused on compression during the creation of Secret of Mana. So maybe Nintendo saw using their own system as a bit of a feather in their cap

>> No.9821295

>>9821246
nintendo just looked at lzss, removed ring buffer, went back to sliding window, and utilized next-byte lookahead.
it took them almost 10 years to realize they could implement a simple technique to extend dictionary sizes from 18 to 273.
the real crackpots behind compression wizardry comes from HAL, and much to my severe disappointment, nothing from them was a part of anything revealed in the gigaleak - just bingbingwahoo and gotta catch 'em all siphoned by turbo autists.

although super donkey has so many levels of content including an early alttp proto overdump within it i feel obligated to say dd ocarina is the winner. all this otherstuff was unknown before the leak but the dd expansion was the longest burn on us. the fact it still doesnt provide the missing link of HOW it was going to be inserted into the core game gives me the big sad.

I think someone mentioned that it would have taken far too much resources to do, especially for every world. I am not sure if by resources they mean cartridge space, RAM, or processing power though. It looks amazing though, like something you would have seen on a CD addon to the SNES or from an early 2D 32bit era game rather than something off a SNES cart. Shame we didn't get that.

What on earth are you talking about? The "disk drive" expansion, also known simply as "Zelda 64" was never supposed to connect with Ocarina of Time. It was just that, a beta of Ocarina of Time. Koizumi says in Iwata Asks that he came up with the idea of fairies (glowing white balls that follow around people) and this matches with how rudimental the story in the leak is. You think adult "Zelda 64" Link and those things go together? Say it with me,

for context on their weird compression structures from that era:

>type 1
>MIO0/Yay0
>flags block (32-bit words)
>dictionary block (16-bit half words) (dedicated offset with pointer)
>byte block (+ length values if Yay0) (dedicated offset with pointer)
>its structuring has the potential to benefit from recursive compression, but wasn't taken advantage of

>type 2
>TKMK00 (mk64)
>some headache structuring with no real benefit as it coexists with MIO0 on the cartridge, and the person decompiling the game converted those blocks to MIO0 (TKMK00 is a waste of code)

>type 3
>SMSR00 (ys64)
>flags + dictionary block (16-bit half words each)

IIRC the story goes about them presenting Plok, and then them going on about Nintendo refusing it because they were making a similar game, and then the devs naming Yoshi's Island or something or it was inferred from the time frame
The story was historically bizarre, because Plok is not like Yoshi's Island, at all. It made no sense
And then, the story made a lot more sense when we saw the Super Donkey protos, because it has similarish gameplay

(I recall one of the concepts revealed her having spiky teeth like some kind of shark or demon or something)

Personally I think it would have been interesting to have humans exist in the Star Fox setting (they already added fucking dinosaurs at this point, and Starlink confirmed that but I doubt it's considered canon) but I know many others were against the idea.

They were considering a female rabbit at one point too. I guess they trashed it since two rabbit characters would have been a bit boring when so many others had not been introduced yet.

>>9828536
On top of all the trashed character concepts, the other craziest thing for me was that some of the earliest Star Fox 1 protos had no character/animal portraits in them yet and the files were named "SG"

Before Argonaut were hired by Nintendo they made a game for older PCs at the time called Starglider, which looked a lot like Star Fox. They were also apparently trying to port the game to the NES using enhancement chips but were told to shelve it for the SNES.

It was known that it was at Miyamoto's suggestion that animal characters were added to Star Fox during development, but I had no idea that originally it was going to be another entry in their existing Starglider series.

>>9828703
Wasn't the reason the original hacker got arrested not for the hack itself, but because he had child porn or some shit like that? From what I recall the gigaleak was from some friend or associate of the original hacker who got a copy and decided to release it. I recall there was rumors that it was also just a small piece of the hack but I have no idea if that was true.

Has any piece of official starfox media ever elaborated on the different species relations to the planets they live on? As in, fox example, i always assumed each species was essentially aliens to another until they finally united in some type of galactic alliance. So like, all canines originate from Corneria, all amphibians from some water planet, birds from another, etc, etc. I feel like that is the idea since i want to say the DS one involved a enemy civilization/planet of aquatic species? Plus then you have dinosaurs on their own planet and insects as an extrastellar species.

They clearly had a lot more planned but canned it due to poor sales. I just played through it a few months ago and there are a few big story elements that went absolutely nowhere and were never brought up again, several smaller ones that also go nowhere and are never brought up again, there are spoiler-ish characters as part of the pilots you can get (which I am pretty sure were only released digitally) that are never brought up in the story and were clearly meant for a later wave when more story was added, the game mentions three big zones with the first being the one you are in... yet when you reach the second zone it's just the final boss fight and then you are forced to leave after the fight which then goes straight to the ending with no option to return to the second zone again much less do ANYTHING with the third zone, and there was heavy implications that the main bad guy you are after is being manipulated by someone else but that never happens

Probably also didn't help that there was very little reason for people to buy the PS4, Xbox, or PC versions of the game as they had significantly less content since it's not like Nintendo would allow Star Fox on rival systems or PCs and there was nothing additional in place of Star Fox for the other platforms.

My guess is the game was stuck in development hell for years, and might have even started out being a WiiU exclusive with Star Fox, but time and uncertainties of being able to get the Star Fox license caused them to turn it multiplat (probably why Star Fox being in it was not mentioned when it was first announced) and by the time it did finally come out the toy thing was dead, but they had already spent millions in the R&D and production of them and had no choice.

And of course after it sold like shit they just decided to cut their losses, release what they had finished as DLC, and just drop it completely.

Yeah, for Master Quest. There is this persistent myth among you tcrf folk that it was released in Japan for the N64 and only brought overseas as a pack-in bonus for Wind Waker. This is a handy red herring to draw attention away from the fact there was nothing beyond Ocarina of Time. Miyamoto waxed philosophically about a lot of things as he revised the last quarter of the game. The story being the Imprisoning War and Ganondorf not starting as evil. Navi being Link's girlfriend and able to feed Epona. Magic-infused arrows. There being more to the Deku Scrubs. All of these were lies. If there was a planned expansion after OoT, why didn't Aonuma mention it back in 2009 when he described the cut arrow spells? This was post-Medallions since the leak proved the Goddess Spells reused the Magic Powers.

The hooks are specifically and explicitly for the Disk Drive system. We know it was not released, but there were most definitely *plans* to use it, even if they were scrapped.

>There is this persistent myth among you tcrf folk that it was released in Japan for the N64 and only brought overseas as a pack-in bonus for Wind Waker.
Nobody is saying this.

>All of these were lies.
Like, you do understand that I have access to the interviews you are talking about and can read them in Japanese, and can read code for the original ROM, which includes the hooks?

We are not claiming the planned ideas were actually implemented and sold, but the OoT cart release was absolutely intended to support the DD system and have expanded content introduced to it from this even if this didn't happen, though what was ultimately created ended up being Master Quest.

Saying "The "disk drive" expansion, also known simply as "Zelda 64" was never supposed to connect with Ocarina of Time" is just wrong, flat out.

That game is on the list of software to use the improved SLI algorithm formatted with type 1.

To my knowledge regarding N64 titles,
>15 games use MIO0
>20 games use Yay0
>3 games use Yaz0

The games using Yaz0 are
>Animal Crossing 64
>LoZ Ocarina of Time
>LoZ Majora's Mask
... considerably late in the console's life cycle (November 1998+, Ultra64 development began ~1993 with the SLI algorithm ~1994).

On another note, it's unclear as to why studios opted to use the lesser MIO0 revision for their titles circa '99/2K.

The last known game to use the Yay0 structure was Luigi's Mansion for the GCN.
Interestingly enough, there are a number of Gamecube titles that have SLI decompression functions within the games' code, yet there's no trace of those functions being used (FourCC a.k.a. magic bytes are nowhere to be found in the data).
Kirby Air Ride and Super Monkey Ball serve as such examples, the former's compression method(s) unknown being a HAL game, and the latter using LZSS.
This suggests that the SLI library was bundled with Dolphin SDKs at some point, puzzlingly, being absent in the leaked SDKs found online today.
What's more confusing is that ARC files are SLI compressed, [R]ARC being a Dolphin SDK storage utility.

If only more of the Gigaleak had been dispensed/procured, there might've been more interesting things to read up on.

The theory was that with the disc, people could see how the install worked and used that to unbrick wiis.

Mother 64 likely got shelved for being too large to implement on a cost-effective basis.
Bonkers Sad Fur Fag was one of the largest titles for the system on a cartridge sized at 512 megabits,
and that game would not have been possible without zlib, mpeg audio, and an experienced development team who'd mastered the hardware moreso than the company that engineered the system.
HAL Laboratory had crack programmers, but the compression algorithm they'd devised for Kirby 64, Smash Bros., and Pokémon Snap could compete with zlib's "-fastest" switch at best.

I'm willing to bet the team behind the Mother 64 fan project has the secret sauce for reference material.

Granted, the fan project is for PC and not the N64, but a theory of mine is that they've gone straight to a PC port basing it off of reverse engineered object code from leaked materials.
The time frame from which the project started is awfully close to the timeframe of said leaks from Nintendo.

Just a little runaway thought~

I'm sure some hardcore Melee autists are hard at work decompiling the game.

Actually, the game was first demo'd at E3 2017 and it caught the eye of Nintendo and the devs were invited to Nintendo HQ to meet Miyamoto, we don't get any real details on why Nintendo invited them or what they were looking to get out of it. I'm assuming Nintendo was looking for ways to expand the Amiibo brand and see if the Starlink toy line was a plausible way to do it.
Either way, they made the sales pitch and Nintendo liked what they saw.

Of course as was already mentioned, this effectively doomed the other versions of the game and it all fell apart from there.
