yeah with the xbox it feels like you're squeezing something, like the centre of pressure is between your thumb and fingers. But with the dual shock it feels like your thumb is kind of floating out over nothing and it's harder to get used to. An analogy might be playing a guitar without your thumb right at the bottom of the fretboard instead of halfway up behind your fingers. And with the analog sticks that are also buttons if you push them in, it's harder to push them in straight without moving without moving the stick on the dual shock. Feels that way for me anyway

I bought an 8bitdo pro wired for xbox Series to have both layouts and play Hollow Knight more comfortably. Then I realized I may have wasted my money, seeing how well the X is doing in 2022 and 2023. Sure, I can always use it on PC, but I already had a Dual shock 4 for d-pad games.

the thing is you have to choose between somewhat suboptimal analog placement and an unusable dpad, the dpad gets hurt much more being in the unergonomic position because of it requiring you to press farther down on a flat surface. with all the 2d games I've played on my dualshock over the years I think it ends up being a reasonable compromise even if the decision probably had little to do with dpad functionality.

Analog stick doesn't really matter all that much. Pressing dpad right is slightly a bit stressful that's it. Despite that given the ergonomics of Xbox controller, it's still the better choice.
Main advantage of having analog stick at the bottom is that you can claw grip dpad for weapons.

That is definitely true. Went to a friends house a while back before they got a PS5. There's definitely a strange plastic quality that varies over the course of the controller's production cycle. Good to see I'm not the only one who has noticed it (I even noticed that the D-Pad on one PS4 controller was PS1 grey until it went completely black in the later ones. Very strange.)

You can't adjust your thumb like that. Also no game uses it in a meaningful manner. You have to get the maximum speed in racing games*, Ace Combat and so on. As MGS 2-3 it's the stupidest idea. On top of it MGS 2 and 3 works best when you assign buttons to be like MGS 5.
Arcade racing games require 100% pressure and even for simulation games you can't adjust button press with your thumb.

However, I’ve been playing Returnal recently and the controller is surprisingly very comfortable and the buttons respond just right. Not sure if it’s excitement because I like the game or I just didn’t like the DS5 for no reason.

Nobody ever seems to complain about the right analog stick or the right shoulder buttons being hard to use because the stick is not on the position where the buttons are, so I don't get why the left stick is such a big deal.

Personally, I can use the left stick in either position, because the stick has more height than the pad, even if it's not on the main position your finger doesn't need to stretch as much, so it's comfortable either way. The D-pad, on the other hand, is very uncomfortable unless it's on the main position.

Credit to Xbox though, their layout is still not as bad after you get used to it, I think the way Nintendo does it by putting the D-Pad straight down from the stick is the fucking worst, it feels like I have to retract my finger to use the d-pad and it gives me cramps after a while.

i tend to agree. N64 for ex, looks like some sort of trident/sextoy mashup, but is incredibly ergonomic and fits a huge amount of hand sizes comfortably. better design than its given credit for

the one thing i think sony nailed way earlier than its competitors was the number, and simultaneous use of, all the buttons
like think about it, even the non analog controllers of PS had 4 face buttons, 4 shoulder buttons, start and select. then the DS gives you two stick clicks. sure it lacked 6 face buttons for fighting games, but the large variety of buttons allowed the early PS library to be a lot more complex than the prior gen, and most of its competitors. look at MGS for ex. that game wouldve been impossible without all those buttons being handy

the DS was also a good jumping off point, so they could then include pressure sensitivity and whatnot very easily in the next few gens. as opposed to their competitors "baby with the bathwater" idea of redesigning the controller every gen
