Started playing the 3D Metal Slug recently and its pretty enjoyable. It makes some obvious 3D action game additions like lock on targeting, but im surprised how so much of it feels like playing the 2D games, but just in 3 dimensions. Feels like the kinda fun little title you would play in the early days of the ps2, even if it was a late release.

That game was one of the first import games I downloaded back when the original HDLoader released. I was a Segafag growing up, so I also downloaded the Altered Beast PS2 game. I remember it being a disappointment but I might not have given it a fair shake since I suddenly had a shitload of new games to try and only 40GB of storage space for them on the FFXI hard drive.

The PS2 had a ton of those weird low budget/high SOVL games. Seek and Destroy (pic related) was a good one, so was Global Defense Force (the first game in the Earth Defense Force series). Evil Dead: Regeneration is also really good if you like the source material.

>>9820202
>Nightmare of Druaga

Fuck I haven't thought about that game in years. I worked at a Game Crazy and we had an injoke with the staff that "Nightmare of Druaga" was the new "thinking about baseball" while having sex (distracting yourself so you don't cum too fast). The joke was you'd quickly mutter "nightmare of druaga nightmare of druaga nightmare of druaga" under your breath whenever you had sex. Whenever an attractive woman came in to the Game Crazy or the Hollywood Video whoever saw her first would mutter "nightmare of druaga" and we'd all laugh.

One thing I used to love to do was fuck with the new guys at Hollywood Video. When it was slow we'd call them up and ask them dumb questions like "Hi, do you have a copy of Grand Theft Anal: Man Under Us on the Nintendo Gaycube?" and watch as they looked all confused (we shared the same building and you could walk freely between the two, so we could be behind our counter and peer around the game walls to see their employees).

I worked hours at the Hollywood video as well. The safe there was behind the counter and had two sections, one was for the nightly drop and the other no one knew what it was for. Whenever I had a shit day (or whenever I felt like it) I'd drop one of the red magnetic strips used for locking the movies into the second section of the safe. Later, after I had quit, the store was closed down and the regional manager came to help break everything down. My friend still worked there at the time and he told me later that the regional guy opened the second section of the safe and a shitload of red locks came pouring out and the guy was super confused.

I'm probably just an autistic faggot but not seeing alot of hidden gems in the thread.

>Darkwatch
Super fun console FPS with a dark, western setting where you play as a vampire-cowboy. Not super long but if you're in for a fun ride check it out.

>Secret Weapons Over Normandy
WW2-based dogfighting game. Never see people recommend this, especially with the PS2 having the Ace Combat series which is great but pretty well-known.

>Urban Chaos: Riot Response
Rocksteady's first ever game, and it's an arcade console FPS! Super fast to beat but alot of challenges to do for missions that'll get you pretty cool new weapons, upgrades and items so if you want to 100% it it'll keep you occupied for awhile. I think this game is criminally underrated for console FPSs, I'd personally rank it behind TimeSplitters 2 and Future Perfect.

Just to note, all these games do have Xbox ports too but the PS2 versions are basically the same (Xbox run these at 480p, no performance differences as far as I know)

>> No.9822005

I know one but I don't like telling people about it because as soon as a youtube video gets made it'll cost $100+. For now it's still a $20 game.

(cont)

Most depressing part of the job was the time an older guy walked in and just sorta looked around slowly at different games on the walls (this was like 2005/2006 so it was a lot of PS2/Xbox/GC and some new 360 stuff). I was on the phone with some customer about something when he walked in, but when I was done I walked up and asked if he was looking for anything specific (the normal retail "need any help?" shit). It was just the two of us in the store, and the dude just turned to me and unloaded his whole life. Turns out his kid had very recently died. He told me that his son had been really into videogames, but he didn't know anything about them and had always given his son shit about 'wasting his time' playing games, and how he was always working so he never really had the time to connect to his son, and now he'd never have the chance. Since videogames were such a huge part of his kid's life he just wanted to go to the store and look around and try and get a sense of what they meant for his kid. I left him alone for a few minutes and then called him over to the counter and asked him for his kid's info. I didn't recognize his name but I kind of remembered him as a regular. I pulled up his account and went over all of his purchases with the guy. I went game by game and gave him some info about each one (what type of game it was, a general overview of the story, whether it was good or bad, basically just gave the dude a crash course on the past few years of his kid's hobby). It was super dead at the store that day so I basically got to talk to this dude for around an hour about all of the games his kid had been into. Based on which games he kept, and which he traded back in (and how soon after buying them he did so) I was able to give his dad an idea of which games and genres he had liked. At the end the dude thanked me and left. I never saw him again but I hope I was able to help him at least a little bit with dealing with the grief he had.

>>9822041
Thanks man. I worked at a call center for a big cellphone company a while after that, and one time had this call where this guy's phone didn't work in his house but would work in his driveway. It was some dude who lived in a pretty rural place (at the very edge of a coverage area) in a sort of valley in a brick house so it was just the perfect storm of signal blocking. He is adamant that the phone has to work inside his house, but he's polite and I'm in a good mood so I end up comping him the leasing fee on a signal extender (basically an antenna you mount on a window or outside which leads to a box inside your house that can broadcast/receive a signal) so his phone will work inside as well, comped the rush shipping, etc. Afterward he's pretty happy and wants to talk to a supervisor, so I put him on hold, find one, and patch him over.

Later on I found out from the sup that he was on the transplant list for an organ and the reason he needed the phone to work inside was because it went wherever he did 24/7 and at literally any second he could get a call saying that the organ he was waiting for was ready, and he needed to get to the hospital right the fuck now.

Those two events made me realize that even the shittiest dead end loser bottom of the barrel retail/CS/etc job has the potential to be monumentally important to someone.

I don't know if it is currently, but when I played it it was not.

My install is pretty out of date though, I just installed the SATA adaptor to my Network Adaptor the other day and found an old 500GB SSD I wasn't using, so I'm going to update everything soon. From what I hear the newest versions support one of the more common data formats (I think it was exfat) which means you can pull the drive out and attach it to a PC and just copy game .isos over that way. Seems like it would be a lot faster than FTPing them, as well as not requiring me to hook my PS2 up to my network.
