Why does the Dreamcast feel retro but PS2/GCN/Xbox feel modern?

I know that's a common sentiment on /vr/ and I feel the same way but nobody has ever put into words what exactly is going on with that.

-Late 90's release
-No homogenised dual analog stick controller layout
-Lots of PS1/N64 crossgen releases
-Raw, unshaded polygonal look
-Last arcade-at-home based console

Power and time. 2000 PS1 games also feel PS2. 2006 PS2 games also feel like 360 games.
Power difference between DC,PS2 and GC,Xbox is obvious.

All the best games are arcade ports and feel very old school compared to what ps2 and Xbox ended up doing.

I badly wanted one at launch but I chose to replace my og ps1 at the time instead. I don’t think it should be lumped in with 6th gen consoles since it never really competed with them anyway.

the time the DC bit the dust is when the other 3 were just getting started
it honestly feels more like a 5th gen console than 6th gen

>> No.9812897

I mostly disagree, I actually think the Wii feels retro now but not gonna try to defend that line of thinking any time soon.

But I think it's mostly because the Dreamcast was primarily arcade ports, or at least games with arcade sensibilities. There are exceptions of course but it was clearly Sega's strategy to continue the "fun of the arcade, but at home" line of thinking. And while some people love that, there's no question that it was an outdated strategy by Gen 6 and then on top of that the games themselves were largely aping our outright porting games that had been seen before. So the console feels like the last stand for "classic" gaming in many ways, which is why I think it's so beloved despite it's limited library.

Then conversely on the Sony/Microsoft side of things, they were essentially laying the groundwork for the next 20 years of game development. You had a big leap forward technology wise, arguably the last major leap forward in game fidelity in all of game hardware from these consoles, and then a lot of franchises and genres were becoming templatized. So consider games like Halo, Resident Evil 4, GTA 3, and even Nintendo stuff like Metroid Prime and Smash Bros Melee. These games were all big departures from their predecessors but in the decades to come the gameplay of these franchises would remain largely unchanged. And in that sense, these consoles still feel very modern, they feel like the first in an era that we're still in to this day.

Any way that's my two cents.

It was a mid gen release. As a result it still had a lot of games from the 5th gen and the game design of its modern games reflected that of the 5th gen
>Skies of Arcadia
5th gen style rpg with 6th gen graphics
>Code Veronica
5th gen survival horror with 6th gen graphics. This was especially accentuated by how different RE4 was to previous entries
>Jet set radio
had an arcade based design
>Sonic adventure
was based on 5th gen platformers. Very different to the popular platformers that came later like jak 2 and 3 as well as ratchet and clank
>Arcade ports
Arcade died in the west around the time the 6th gen started so most people will associate 3d arcade games with 5th gen

Then you had some experimental games like rez and shenmue which didnt really resemble anything else. I guess it had popular sports games but most people here don't care about those so they won't think about them. I would say it was only in fighting games that the DC felt truly 6th gen since some of the biggest titles of that gen launched on it.

Truth is, the dream cast was for my generation and at the time were we in school. I learned about the DC in high school well after it released and despite the lies online, they didn't sell simply because people weren't aware. People blame file-sharing but that requires having a console in the first place. 2 million unsold units? Half a decade of patience would have gone a long way. Look at WoW. In the beginning it was barren like most mmorpgs but with time once people became aware and got the proper hardware they started to jump in even though by then blizz was fucking their own game up. Dreamcast just needed to wait. Most people that wanted a dreamcast either didn't know it existed at all or their parents would lie to to them and say it cost too much.

Play CRPGs from the 90's/early-mid 00's. Then I occasionally dip my toe into some JRPGs on Saturn/SNES/PS1. I think the only systems I have yet to try out that I'm interested in is the 3DO and the PC Engine.

If I could go back in time I would tell Sega to drop the entire boring-ass Shenmue franchise for Daytona 2, Scud Race and Planet Harriers ports to DC. They should have kept pushing the "Arcade at home" experience.

I mean, they were already doing the chad Sega move of releasing mid-gen to distance themselves from direct competition--a move Nintendo would later use effectively with the Switcheroo to not only put the dunk on Sony and MS, but also bury memories of the Wii U. On top of that they proved that "withered tech" *still* fucking works.

Sega were fucking planetary-gonad-pioneers. Now they're just kiddy Sonic shovellers.

It's the first thing I would do if I had the ability to time travel. Saving Sega would be what I'd commit all my time to, hopefully using as much knowledge of the 90s to also gamble on sports a la Back to the Future so I can gain potentially infinite funds to help them out, along with knowledge of what and what not to do.

I'm sure SoJ would still find some way of fucking it all up.

Best way I can put it is it just feels like the last pre 9/11 console even though I'm sure it wasn't. It feels like the last major console released before the gradual slide into modernity began and everything became infused with cynicism and bullshit and just the same disease affecting almost everything, and appropriately, it died early.

This is all just a feeling though, it doesn't map onto the real world 1:1, its all just the "feeling" of what it represents. It'a the last console I can think of that was just imbued with the spirit of "life is good, games are fun and cool, the future is gonna be way cool". The other contemporaries to it lacked the optimism infused 3D the Dreamcast featured so heavily, instead opting for different doninant styles that weren't so cheery and hopeful.

Again, and I cannot emphasize this enough, nothing I've said should be taken literally, I know the impulse for many is to break out a bunch of dates and facts and etc. - I know. I'm trying to turn a feeling into words and I think its more of a symbolic understanding people have than a literal one.

Nah I get it anon, well said honestly. There was a thread last week about jungle music in games becoming a thing of the past when it used to be the standard, and it was so on a similar principle: games being zany, fun, and optimistic. Time went on the world got collectively more muted and cynical, as did our entertainment. I absolutely wholly agree with you and this is coming from someone who loves gen 6 consoles.

Just your perspective and experience.
I had a ps1 when I experienced a dreamcast. Played it for the first time at a friend's house. I hated all games, especially Sonic Adventure, and I was a huge megadrive fan before I got a ps1.
Walking in a mall and seeing all these dreamcast versions of ps1 games was just plain stupid.
Everything about the Dreamcast console just felt wrong and out of place... like it's came from a parallel universe. Of course that shit doesn't belong in this existence. Neither retro nor modern.

Looking at the Dreamcast enclosure, it carries the then trending beige aesthetic sported with PC cases of that era.
Of course, that's not to say colours other than beige weren't used beforehand, but rather became a staple as the years have led on.
At least that's my view on the subject of retired aesthetics.

It might have to do with the PS2/GCN/Xbox having "relevant/modern" successors - those names still get thrown around.

Sega was left in the dust in the console department, and so it now feels more "distant," faded into obscurity.
