a big chonk of the fun was imaginative combo techs of your toons. He had none in dual, and hard limited in triples. So he sucks in a fundamental sense in that game's engine.

It was always confusing why despite having some of the same spells, he didn't get a version of a dual tech specific to him... like Supervolt with Robo, or Ice Sword 2 with Chrono....

And when you factor in tab usage, his speed is already above average so he doesn't need much to get max. He's the best candidate for power tabs because the only other characters who are deficient in physical damage are Lucca & Marle and he starts a lot stronger than them.
It's kind of moot because double techs are just OP, like you can steamroll the game with Crono/Ayla doubles without even thinking, but yeah Magus isn't weak.

You derived most of your fun in this game just from using double techs? How asinine. Lots of things are fun. Using Magus, seeing him float around and swing his scythe, is fun. Letting him lead your party after Crono has died is fun. Magus doesn't lock you out of double techs with your other two party members either.

Ayla's ability to steal items makes her so far and away the best character, it's dumb. But even if you didn't care about that, her speed and attack power are like having a second Crono in the party but without the addition of pretty strong magic to boot.

Ayla pretty much never leaves my party once she's permanent. Her only weakness is her lack of elemental, so you can't get a balanced magic party unless you have Magus like >>9802474 mentioned. But she's so good in every other way that it hardly matters. Magus is solid mid-tier, his lack of single-target spells hurts his versatility.

Weird flex. You're still in a better position with all characters alive, reviving your fallen character is better than trying to profit from the damage boost.

It's actually the weakest. Dark Matter has 38 base damage, while Shock has 40, Flare has 42 and Luminaire has 50.
Once again, Lucca is stronger than Magus natively, Crono and even Robo can become better casters than Magus with enough magic points.

Since Magus has far more Magic stats than anyone else it doesn't matter which spells has a better damage base because MAGUS STATS WILL MAKE HIS "WEAK SPELLS" OVERPOWERED, while every other party will need to get a shiload of Magic tabs and grind like crazy to match Magus' magic power. By Level 80, with no tabs, Magus is already ** in magic, while Lucca at 87.

Robo with tabs is the best character though hands down, he has everything. He's even 2nd behind Magus as far as variety in his elemental damage.

You do get enough speed tabs to max out 3 characters if you know what you're doing, but even then I still see some merit on Magus over Lucca, as he can equip the Nova Armor to get status immunity, whereas Lucca gets the Prismatic Dress, which is also good on its own (has auto-barrier) but serves a different purpose.

By the way OP, your build is terrible. Get Magus a Haste Helmet and a Nova Armor. Auto-haste is much better than a few defense points.

Luca is tethered to the most resisted element in the game in fire. Magus can play around that, Magus also has horrible availability, only being usable for the optional endgame quests. However, both are just DPS characters with nothing else to offer and unless you're on NG+ and can retard mash your way through.

The objective best character is Robo, the best party is Crono, Robo, and Ayla all of whom can deal heavy damage but also have other uses with their single and double techs.

It's only marginally better (2 def points) if you're already getting the status immunity from the Gloom Helmet, and definitely worse otherwise.
Meanwhile you could be acting twice as much without losing any passive bonuses by sacrificing just a few defense points.
