The RP2+ has a much more suitable screen for most retro systems and is significantly more powerful than the 351 so you'll probably be better off with that. The downsides are that the dpad is in the wrong place for 16 bit and below systems, and the sticks are naff. No L3 and R3 and the right slider is serviceable at best (although weirdly I quite like if for emulating the N64's C buttons). This may or may not be an issue depending on which PS1 games you want to play.

It's probably OK but see what's included, the original warrantied version is $95 for the shell alone.

It kind of seems like a waste of money desu, it doesn't make the console any more comfortable to play and it's arguably less practical, I'd just buy a plastic shell that has the slot for a headphone jack and go with that, soldering a jack in is easy as hell

Dpad is kinda shit on the rg35xx. It feels really nice (mushier than a Switch Pro dpad, stiffer than a DS4 dpad), but the dpad is way too sensitive. On Metroid Zero Mission it's extremely prevalent. You can move left and right by tilting the very bottom of the dpad. This also holds true for each of the directions.

It highly depends on how you use the dpad. I roll the fleshy part of my thumb over the dpad like an analog stick so I don't get any false diagonals.

Because everyone and their god damned grandmother says that cart has an abysmal two hour battery life.. on their modded SP systems with max brightness IPS screens and what not. I cannot find even the smallest shred of information about the battery life when it is being used with an unmodded system, let alone a 001.

While I'm not sure, in regard to your question, I do think that as long you're using one of these batteries, you should easily be able to get over three, maybe even over four hours out of the DE. On unmodded SPs. I specify on that battery because original SP batteries are bound to be weak as hell two decades later, and the cheap chinese replacement SP batteries are straight up underpowered.

Surprisingly good. The standalone mupen app runs everything (even stuff like GoldenEye) on the fast preset at 240p. Obviously you might get some bugs on the fast preset, but overall it's very playable. You can get even better speed on N64oid, but that doesn't recognise the right stick.

At least people are citing this google document instead of that one popular, stupid youtube video where the battery lives of the Everdrive and DE were compared.. on different modded SP systems with different batteries.
Even so, the extra features the DE has are nice, even if some of them are janky. The DE menus are rather pleasant with their colours and thumbnails for the games, but the save state feature for GBA titles works sometimes, and creates bugs in-game at other times. Not really recommended to use that.

After falling for the handheld meme and getting both a phone controller and a retro handheld I came to a conclusion that gaming on a handheld mostly sucks and I much prefer playing on my computer or couch with better controls and a bigger screen. I play racing games a lot and difference between playing them on a handheld and PC is night and day. One exception is DS and 3DS games which require the touch screen, those feel better with a phone than on a PC with a mouse and I'm not willing to get original hardware for those.

Maybe Steam Deck is better and more comfortable but I'm not willing to invest in that.

For me, the DE is better than the Everdrive simply because it has rumble and games can be loaded into NORFLASH, allowing you to switch the cart into mode B where it boots the game directly from the NORFLASH. This takes the analysis paralysis of the OSD out of the equation and makes the cart boot just like a normal GBA game.

Also, battery life hasn't been an issue even with hours long periods of play. I've played over lunch breaks, then all evening and night when I get home, never worrying about the battery. Only reason one would care is if you have poor memory and forget to charge things all the time, or if you're the type to leave things on or in sleep mode for forever instead of just saving and powering down.

Anbernic etc. release designs in new housings all the time, they're clearly able to gear up for new sku's without blowing the price out easily enough, the 353p was a brand new shape with a touch screen and a more powerful SOC for what, $135? and they can't be paying more than $10 per panel for their non touch stuff, it's going to happen eventually.

There's also the fact you can't get transparent colors on metal, and the texture on the transparent RP3+s and Odins in particular are super nice. I do prefer the slightly rounded sides and 4:3 aspect ratio on the 405m as well as the slightly smaller width that affords, but it seems like the quality of the screen itself is a little underwhelming. Something a little brighter, a little more saturated, and 1280x960 would've been kino.

The one thing above all else I can't forgive tho is dpad in the wrong location. For me? It will be the KTR1.

Metal is better if you appreciate these things as a weird kind of collectable, rather than a thing to play games on. It feels nicer in the hand for quick 5 minute messing about sessions where the extra weight isn't noticeable in a bad way, like it would be when the thing is spending most of the day in your coat pocket or in your hands for a long play session

I wish they didn't announce it like it was an April Fools joke. That aside, the specs are impressive and the eGPU support is somewhat compelling but I'm really meh on the build. It could be like a Steam Deck 2 before the actual Steam Deck 2 comes out minus the price. The thing that will kill people's interest is the price, I bet this thing is more of a competitor to Aya/GPD/OneX rather than the Steam Deck and having warranty support from Asus is going to blow the chink manufacturers out of the water. Their best bet is getting acquired now by PC OEMs who want in on UMPCs.

It kinda looks like the sexbox controller dpad which was actually shockingly good, so I'll reserve judgement in case they actually pulled something like that off. Bucking the kino 16:10 trend for 16:9 is lame as fuck though, and yeah I'm expecting the battery life to be atrocious. Same with the size, weight, and price.

I get that the power is supposed to be the stronkest yet or something, but this is literally the exact opposite approach of what I want. The Deck is already more than enough power for me, what I want now is something small, light, weak, and cheap with d-pad on top. Something to play my Steam shmups, bmups, platformers, puzzle games, vns, etc.

We're talking about the 4th largest PC OEM, we're talking about a company that ships millions of PC devices a year. They have experience doing volume and hardware design to make costs low with a userbase for its gaming brand even if it has a reputation for markup and stuff is still going to have a base of people who would support it vs other people who have tried in the space. The only real issue is how Asus prices things vs Chinese handhelds rather than the Steam Deck. The closer they get, the better, obviously but it's not quite clear cut if they are in for the marketshare or profit aspect which will determine said pricing.

Chinese netizens doesn't really have that many niches considering how they get spied on everywhere online for the most part and it takes a while to get niches established into something more mainstream. But there was also no reason to discuss "western" handhelds or tastes as most of the machines come from China first primarily or as a market. Some of the more awful stuff is ridiculed and there is talk about how foreigners would eat up shit. But really, the Steam Deck is the only thing that wasn't Chinese first and foremost and although it did get flak for its shortcomings in reviews but Gabe is still in worship phase over in China for Steam and considering what they offer over Tencent.

I see a lot of RG35XXs here, do you have screen tearing on your units? Mine is already shipped to me, but the only mention of screen tearing was at the end of the recent My Life in Gaming video. The guy there claims that he saw tearing even with Garlic OS. I think I'll probably stick to MinUI, but can you confirm it? I thought playing anything below PS1 would be no issue for this hardware.
While I'm at it, can you disable threaded video for older consoles? If I'm remembering right, threaded video in RetroArch adds a lot of input lag, I'll mostly play JRPGs, but disabling that feature for something like NES platformers would be nice.

My version is from the first batch, I have been playing DKC for the past week and didn't see any screen tearing. Threaded Video is disabled by default on GarlicOS and you can enable if you want.
I'm seeing a lot of people complaining about the recent updates of GarlicOS. Black Seraph is trying to fix the OS to run in the recent revision, but a lot of people are having issues with some emulators.
The thing is that those people complaining are the ones who are daily updating the CFW instead of using the stable version 1.3.4 of GarlicOS which is in the page to download.
So my recommendation is if you get one from the first batch just download the version 1.3.4 of GarlicOS and you are good, but if you get the new revision and that doesn't work with GarlicOS 1.3.4 you could try the newest version and if you find any problems that annoys with the newest version you just ignore GarlicOS for the time being and install MinUI.

>>9799935

I wanted to install MinUI on it right away, actually. I saw the settings it provides and it had almost everything I wanted, so I'll probably go with it. I still have to play on it myself to decide which OS I like better of course.

I'm also sad about the idea of giving up the sexy transparent shell and texture, but w/e the color choices are still pretty nice.

3DS prices on ebay are crazy right now, you could get rid of one of them and make a decent chunk of money.

Get rid of the V90 and DS fat, the original model DS, keep the rest

Actually you could keep the V90 as well and use it and the 280v as presents for people at Christmas or whatever. 12 year old me would've been very happy with a 280v.

Anyone know a good theme for the RG35XX that looks good and has images.
I don't really like how the text goes over the image etc.

I've had my DSi since it was released, it was the special editon white one that had some brain games on it and some other stuff. Still one of my favorites, pretty comfy to hold and transport.

How many people here use their mobile handheld for streaming via Steam Link?
I've been thinking about getting a simple (potentially android) handheld streaming/emulation device for when I wanna just game on the couch, balcony or in the bathtub.
It doesn't need to be able to run any modern PC games natively, since I'll nearly exclusively use it in my home, to stream from my PC. And thus no
So it shouldn't cost more than ~200€, thus no Steam Deck, which imo would be a massive overkill for just that.

I've been looking at the Retroid Pocket 3+, any other suggestions in that price range?

The Ayn Odin seems to be somewhat faster, but their website sucks and some of those are sold out. There doesn't seem to be a clear comparison on there what each Ayn device can do, screen size, resolution etc.

It's a playlist file. Usually the format is used to list music, but it can also list the discs in a multidisc game. If you open it in Notepad, it should contain the filenames of the .cue files of the discs.

I stream VNs to my RP3+ with Stream Link every night and it's great. One thing I especially like about it that my RG505 and even my Odin Lite didn't have was a customizable hotkey to enable an analog controlled cursor. Great for slower paced games that require a mouse and for autists like me that hate having to actually touch a touchscreen.

I've also used it to stream some bigboi realtime games to test, and yeah it plays and looks great.
>There doesn't seem to be a clear comparison on there what each Ayn device can do, screen size, resolution etc.
All Odins come with a 6" 1080p screen. The Lite is just all around the better model despite being cheaper (better battery life and fan usage essentially optional due to newer and more efficient chip, slightly better single-core performance and overall benchmarks), but this is especially true if you want to stream since it has wifi 6 compared to the typical wifi 5 in the other models. I only tried streaming on mine once before I sold it (didn't like the ergonomics or d-pad position), but I swear to god it looked and felt like I was playing the game natively on the device itself.

The Odin Base/Pro do have 2 advantages over the Lite, however: slightly better multicore performance and windows 11 support. Last I checked, the performance and compatibility while actually running windows are predictably shitty, but it's cool it has it nonetheless.

Thoughts on the Anbernic rg505? I own a vita 2000 and I love it for playing gba. I've wanted to get a vita 1000 just for the OLED, but the 505 has the same screen and is faster.

Is the OLED worth it? I'm mostly going to be playing gb/c/a, and maybe some ps1. I don't really care about GameCube or PS2 emulation, I have a tab s8 I use for that. I think I would rather have the rg405m for the 4:3 screen, but the OLED of the 505 seems so sweet.

Do any of you own either of these? What's your experience?

>All Odins come with a 6" 1080p screen.
Thanks, that might be worth looking into it then.
I'm sure the Lite would be more than sufficient for my needs, but having a bigger and higher res screen would be a nice upgrade for 50 bucks.
Stuff like Rocket League and action games I'd still only play on the PC of course, this would just be for retro games and (relatively) slow games like Disco Elysium or Persona.

>an analog controlled cursor.
This sounds really practical, but I imagine that can be circumvented by using that special gamepad configuration tool in Steam?

>d-pad position
I get that.
That's exactly why I have an xbox controller for 3D games and a 8Bitdo for 2D games on the PC.
And to a degree this is also the question which type of game I'm going to play more often, I guess.

Thanks for your impression and mentioning the Odin Lite, I'll look into that one a bit more.

I was in a similar position to you around the end of last year, except instead of trying to decide between an RG505 and RG405m, it was between a RG505 and an RP3+. I ended up ordering both like the autist I am with the idea that I would end up selling the one I didn't like as much. They both had gorgeous screens, but much to my surprise I ended up thinking the display in the RP3+ was actually a bit better. It's absurdly saturated for a non-OLED panel, I'm pretty sure the most saturated non-OLED screen I've ever personally seen in fact. The OLED in the 505 still had a slight edge in this regard, but the extra vibrancy and resolution of the RP3+'s screen is what made it the winner for me.

Ultimately what won me over though was the RP3's smaller, sleeker size and lighter weight. I don't think pictures online really do the size difference justice, but the 505 just looks and feels fat as FUCK next to the RP3+. I'll also add that while both are very comfortable to hold and play on, the position of the analog is definitely worse on the 505, and trying to use the sticks in conjunction with the L2/R2 buttons in particular is horrific if that's something you think you'll be wanting to do a lot. D-pad feel and positioning on both was excellent and equally good imo, while I'd give the 505 the edge on the feel of the face buttons even though they're still quite good on the RP3+.

Between 505 and 405m, though? I think I'd actually choose the 505 in that case simply because I can't stand d-pad on bottom. I do really like the smaller size and 4" 4:3 screen, but the color saturation seems pretty lacking as does the resolution.

I'm a a huge Vita fanboy despite hating snoy now for the record. Have both the 1k and 2k, but gave up the OLED to play on the 2k simple because the ergonomics were just that good.

If you're mostly playing analog dominant games and don't mind or even prefer the larger size and weight, then yeah I think the Odin Lite is a great choice.
>This sounds really practical, but I imagine that can be circumvented by using that special gamepad configuration tool in Steam?
Yes there's a built in option in Steam Link that allows you to move your PC's mouse cursor with the left analog stick of your streaming device. I specify "PC's mouse cursor" because the built in cursor option on the RP3+ is actually just moving the cursor on top of the image you're streaming in, and only moves your PC's cursor once you "click" somewhere. The tradeoff here is using the Steam Link's mouse moving option is actually really laggy even when everything else about the streaming experience is great, so I end up using the cursor on the RP3+ side instead. Honestly though, this might not be an issue at all on the Odin Lite since that has the superior wifi 6 chip, not that it should be a deal breaker either way.

I had that with my phone today too when I first tried Steam Link.

You know what, you're right. Weirdly enough that's how it worked on my phone back when I used that to stream but not on my RP3+. Dunno if that's because it responds differently when it detects a "controller" and thinks you'll be using the analog to move the cursor vs just a touchscreen or what.

There's even an easy to use saturation script if you want to make it even more saturated. If you adjust it just right, it really almost just as good looking as an OLED aside from the blacks.

>>9808085
Thanks for the feedback. I somehow hadn't even noticed the dpad on the bottom on the 405. Looking at it now it seems like kind of a deal breaker. And I hadn't heard about the screen lacking saturation. It seems way less appealing now.

I looked at the rp3+ also and it really seems better in every way than the Anbernic, I'm just sort of autistically stuck on wanting the OLED screen. The 505 does look ugly though. For emulating systems that didn't have L2/R2 (like psp on my phone with an Xbox controller) I always just used those buttons for save state and load state hot keys, and the button placement seems nice for my use case. I still wish Anbernic would cut the shit and just make normal shoulder buttons like everyone else though. I really don't anticipate using either the L2/R2 or analogue sticks for gaming most of the time.

I think I'm still leaning towards the rg505, but I'll take a closer look at the rp3+.

Nothing wrong with that m8, I understand completely. Even though I went with the RP3+, I still would've been very happy using the RG505 instead if I had to, so I don't think you'll be disappointed either way. The 505 does have some nice extra perks too, like coming pre-installed with hall sensor sticks and a 10% larger battery (albeit at the cost of lacking fast-charge).
>The 505 does look ugly though.
kek yeah, I didn't wanna say it but that's another reason I went with the RP3+. The color choices really don't help, either. If there's one thing Retroid routinely murders Anbernic on that I don't think even the most ardent Anbernic fanboy would deny, it's color choices.
