I hooked up my PS2 earlier today, it's one of my only systems that doesn't yet have a softmod or everdrive equivalent. Any suggestions on where to start like FreeMcBoot? Obviously I can and am googling this but I wanna drive discussion here too for fun.

You don't need FreeHDBoot, it's just an option on the fat PS2 unlike the slim, which doesn't support hard drives.

>>9786763
Like the other person said the easiest way is to buy a memory card with freeMCBoot already loaded, they're cheap off eBay. Then if you have a slim (which have ethernet built in), or a fat PS2 with a legit network adapter, you can run games over the network.

If you have a fat PS2, you can either get a real network adapter or a fake "network" adapter. The benefit of a real one is that they actually support ethernet, allowing you to boot games over the network. If you want to run games of a hard drive, the real network adapters are IDE, which means you'd want to get an old hard drive to work with it.

The fake network adapters are cheaper, but they don't actually add network capability. On the plus side, they let you plug in a SATA drive. Personally, I bought one of these fake network adapters, a cheap SATA hard drive, and a USB to SATA cable. I don't mind the extra few minutes of removing the hard drive from the PS2, plugging it into my PC, installing games to it and then putting it back into the PS2, I'd rather do that than run a server, but it's up to you. Unless you have a slim, in which case hard drive isn't an option and network is your best bet.

>> No.9786906

>>9786895
I'll also add that in my experience of playing PS2 games off of a hard drive in the past year using OPL, I've played about 25 games, and have only had troubles with 2, Klonoa 2 had fucked up audio, and FF12 IZJS had choppy FMV cutscenes. Both of these problems were fixed for me by turning on mode 1 in OPL, which makes reads from the hard drive happen at the same speed as they would from a disc.

There's something in the works that will let you play PS1 games without burning them on series 75000 and newer slims. It uses the chip that emulates PS1 on these models. I don't follow this much, as I own the 70000 model (with the real, not emulated PS1 CPU on it) so it doesn't concern me. Also, it's the only model of slim that can use HDD with a hardmod.

It's pretty damn weak when you take open source projects meant for x86, compile to MIPS and pray for the best. That's all Retroarch and other homebrew emus do. I'm convinced that Sony or similarly talented/in-the-know devs could have done better. POPstarter and PS1 games on PSP are proof of that. SNES Station and Retroarch run like shit because it's just kiddies compiling it. They wouldn't know the first thing about actually changing the code for better performance, and you'd probably have to start from the ground up anyway. Not use SNES9x as the basis.

No. POPS was developed for a really specific use case (DLC PS1 games launched off the Japanese PS2 HDD unit), and was later repurposed by the PS2 homebrew scene. PS1 discs use the PS1 chips that all PS2s have on the PCB.

This is because the PS1 chips on the PS2 have no way to talk to interfaces a real PS1 wouldn't be aware of, like the HDD or USB. I don't know if launching PS1 games off USB/HDD/SMB/SD with hardware backwards compatibility will ever be possible. Probably cannot be done via software at all. Maybe some modchip would allow it, but it can't be that simple if this much time has passed.

Huh. I'm curious to hear your opinion on this:
I hacked my PS2 years ago, and I checked up on my software versions and I am indeed using the anniversary gay-gay version of OPL, and in turn, popstarter (my files and versions are all dated the same year, 2021, as your discord post image). However, I've played through quite a few PS1 games via popstarter without any issues. Furthermore, any game specific cheats I use, including the recent fix to Final Fantasy VII, load and work without issue too. So I'm mildly curious if my case is a special case, or if I should go through the effort of getting rid of the PS2 HOME version of OPL and replace it with the proper release, and the proper release of popstarter. It would a bit of time and effort due to my game libraries being so large. I would want to ensure that my games, and their respective folders, cheat files, etc are transferred without issue.

I suppose you don't have any means of running PS2 backup discs. That way just buy a memcard (magicgate compatible) with FreeMCBoot 1.966 installed. They are usually bundled with most ELFs you're gonna need like OPL, ULaunchELF etc.
I made my own card, but I do have access to a modchipped PS2 and used it to create the memcard.
That said, a hard drive is the best option for storing your games. PS2 usb is 1.1 only and magnificently slow.

What's the difference between that version in the link you posted and this one: https://www.ps2-home.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=83&t=11576

I see ifcaro's name on both those pages. Or are you referring to the OPL Daily Builds to stay away from?

Bros, I need some advice. I bought an usted FAT PS2, model Scph 30001 for $15 on Marketplace. It came with an original Game (Shrek 2) the power and the composite cable. The console is in good shape, however when connected trough composite the video is in black and white for games, but with Dvd's the image is normal, in color. I have a componente cable and after changing some settings i managed to get it working and now i can play the games with color, but do you guys have any idea what is happening with the composite output? I have some questions about free mcboot, but i'll make another post about it...thanks!

>> No.9795587

Regarding Free Mcboot, i bought a memory card with OPL and FMCB version 1.953. The issue i'm having is that when i turn on the console with controller and the USB drive in, FMCB won't pop up correctly, son I must turn on the PS2 with either the controller or the USB off to get FMCB working, but even si when i try to update My OPL version through ulaunch.elf or FMCB configurator, i can't because the memory card and USB are not recognized while i get in those apps. As for OPL, i can play the games fine, but i guess for the same reason my memory card it's not recognized and it defaults to the VMC, which works ok for most of the games, but for some like jak 1 it doesn't work. The memory card it's not original, but it's works to sabe data when i plug it in after turning on the console. Pherhaps some of the FMCB data is faulty? Sorry for the long post

Sounds like your ps2 can't power up all 3 things at the same time

>on a fat i believe its just using the ps1 hardware
You can't natively run PS1 games off any PS2 through anything other than a CD, because the PS1 hardware in the PS2 is reserved as the I/O controller. Basically, access to the USB or HDD isn't available in PS1 mode.

Replace the composite cable. PS2 lasers have very short life spans though so look into HDD, USB, network, or MC2SIO loading as a replacement.

>>9787909
240p video and native composite is important for some games. FPGA devices will make emulation obsolete in the future, but for now the PS2 and wii are some of the best devices.

>PS2 has very short lifespan in regards to the laser
I don’t think it’s the same for all models, definitely not. The slims are typically more fragile or prone to screwing up, save for the last 2 iterations.
Fat models are usually stronger in longevity, at least marginally. Oh then there is the factor of how often it was banged on or violently shaken, those can cause damage as well.
On a side note, how why isn’t there as many “fragile” warnings connected to the GameCube laser?

7500x and newer slims replaced the real IOP (PS1 CPU) with a PowerPC chip DECKARD that emulates it, and that chip can access the PS2 side peripherals through custom written "drivers", which allows running PS1 ISOs in theory.

The PS2 (before the late-model Slim) used the PS1 CPU as its I/O processor. When you played a PS2 game the PS1 CPU would process things like network data, USB data, controller data, etc. When you played a PS1 game the main game code would run natively on this I/O processor since it's literally just a PS1 CPU.

As far as I'm aware it's physically impossible to run PS1 games from the HDD because the CPU that is used to run the PS1 games is the same CPU that controls the HDD when in PS2 mode. Even if you somehow managed to get access to the HDD within the PS1 sandbox there wouldn't be enough overhead to run the game and the HDD I/O at the same time.

Part of the reason the PS2 struggles to utilize its full 100mbit ethernet speed is because the PS1 CPU is slow.

That's only for the late model Slims that replaced the PS1 CPU with a more powerful PowerPC 405 chip with 2mb of extra memory that emulates the original I/O subsystem.

Fun Fact: PS1 games perform better on those systems since they're being emulated instead of running on bare metal.
