I feel OK playing abandonware because literally no one is benefitting by them being unpublished. If something's on GOG, or Steam or wherever, I do prefer giving the developers something.

Is it technically piracy? Also yes, but it's a bit like comparing smoking weed to smoking crack. I'm not ripping off a developer by downloading a game that I literally can't buy anywhere. You are kinda doing that when you download games that you could in good conscience pay for, and I can afford to pay.

Nobody cares that it's not a legal term, neither is vaporware. Abandonware just means that the game isn't marketed or published anymore, and that the rights holders don't give a fuck about it.

>>9784907
Edge magazine were being intentionally contrarian, which was their entire brand, "clickbait" for the 90s.

>>9785465
He didn't hate action games, he just wanted to do more things than those. Eventually, he got to do a rather ambitious RPG named Anachronox.
If Tom Hall had been inexplicably roped back into iD for Quake (and Tim Willits was launched into the sun with a rocket built by Carmack), then Quake might just have been realized as the open world fantasy game which John Romero originally wanted to do, he'd probably get along really well with Sandy Petersen. It'd have been action-y too, but a different kind, and with a larger world and scope.
I love the Quake we got, and it's a miracle the landfill-coal-seam-fire which was its development turned out a game which was good at all, but one can imagine.

Quite easy. I installed it shortly before making this thread, and other than a tiny bit of stuttering in the first level it has been a smooth experience.
As for the game itself, it's a lot more polished than the first one, but the RPG elements and looting don't feel like an improvement. It also hasn't been quite as funny. So far I think the first game is better despite the major engine improvements.

combination of assets lost + multiple companies that would have owned the game have gone bankrupt or been absorbed into much larger companies

if it was to get a remake, it would take paying...activision/microsoft, i think? and Disney for the simpsons rights. and they would have to remake it from scratch. All of these things are more expensive than a small scale GTA clone can feasibly make back, so it's abandoned forever.

NOLF2 isn't abandonware (although let's face it - abandonware is a fake term that was invented which means "it's old therefore it's ok to steal)
Whoever claimed it was is talking out of their ass.
The actual situation with NOLF2 is that nobody knows who actually owns the IP due to a clusterfuck of acquisitions, restructurings and bankruptcies, and there isn't enough interest to warrant the expense of hiring (((lawyers))) to sort it all out.

Tom Hall got the boot because as so much of what he had worked on got axed, he felt disconnected from the other guys and like there was increasingly little for him to provide the project, so he worked less overall. He ultimately accepts getting the boot because he comes to terms with how he simply wants to do other games. He ends up at Apogee, working on Wolfenstein 3D 2, which becomes Rise Of The Triad, and while it's certainly very different from Wolf3D and Doom, he seems kind of ambivalent about that game, injecting some ideas and humor of his, but he clearly wanted an all new direction with how he geared towards making Anachronox later on.

John Romero got the boot because he talked up this grand vision of a medieval dark fantasy open world game they should make, one which they had all been spitballing ever since the Commander Keen era, but then doesn't commit particularly well to it. He drafted up about a page of stuff as a design document, and then he was absent a lot of the time, sometimes he'd be off engaging in side projects, like supporting the development of Hexen and Strife, and other times he'd simply not be doing any work on any project, instead playing Doom 2 deathmatch with fans, playing Streetfighter 2 with Shawn Green, or other stuff outside the office.
To some defense of Romero, John Carmack really took a lot of time putting Quake's engine together, he was damn near pulling his hair making it actually work right, so there was probably a lot of stuff which couldn't properly be tested or developed until certain points. However, it was still a continuation of Romero's weakening work ethics as seen during Doom 2's development, and you've got the rest of the team left struggling with coming up with ANYTHING to actually do with development, hence why you had Kevin Cloud and Adrian Carmack making all kinds of textures and other assets to pass the time, some which don't even get used at all for the finished game.
